  • Introduction 1
Notes Introduction 1. For a more in- depth discussion of patriarchy and nationalism, see Kim’s analysis of the argument of Gates (2005, 16) and Garcia (1997). 2. Omi and Winant (1986) trace the historical development of privilege tied to white- ness but also foreground discussions of race to contest claims that only those in power— that is, those considered white— can be racist. Omi and Winant argue that whenever the construct of race is used to establish in and out groups and hierarchies of power, irrespective of who perpetrates it, racism has occurred. In “Latino Racial Formation,” De Genova and Ramos-Zayas (2003b) further develop the ideas of history and context in terms of US Latinos in their argument that US imperialism and discrimination, more than any other factors, have influenced Latino racializa- tion and thus contributed to the creation of a third pseudoracial group along the black/white continuum that has historically marked US race relations. The research of Omi and Winant and De Genova and Ramos- Zayas coincides with the study of gender, particularly masculinity, in its emphasis on the shifting nature of constructs such as race and gender as well as its recognition of the different experiences of gendered history predicated upon male and female bodies of people of color. 3. In terms of the experience of sexuality through the body, Rodríguez’s memoir (1981) underscores the fact that perceptions of one’s body by the self and others depend heavily on the physical context in which an individual body is found as well as on one’s own perceptions of pride and shame based on notions of race and desire.

Contact: [email protected] Choutouts: Language contact and US-Latin hip hop on YouTube Matt Garley This paper presents a corpus-sociolinguistic analysis of lyrics and com- ments from videos for four US-Latinx hip hop songs on YouTube. A ‘post-varieties’ (Seargeant and Tagg 2011) analysis of the diversity and hybridity of linguistic production in the YouTube comments finds the notions of codemeshing and plurilingualism (Canagarajah 2009) useful in characterizing the language practices of the Chicanx community of the Southwestern US, while a focus on the linguistic practices of com- menters on Northeastern ‘core’ artists’ tracks validate the use of named language varieties in examining language attitudes and ideologies as they emerge in commenters’ discussions. Finally, this article advances the sociolinguistics of orthography (Sebba 2007) by examining the social meanings of a vast array of creative and novel orthographic forms, which often blur the supposed lines between language varieties. Keywords: Latinx, hip hop, orthography, codemeshing, language contact, language attitudes, language ideologies, computer-mediated discourse. Choutouts: contacto lingüístico y el hip hop latinx-estadounidense en YouTube. Este estudio presenta un análisis sociolingüístico de letras de canciones y comentarios de cuatro videos de hip hop latinx-esta- dounidenses en YouTube.

He started out in the world of Hip Hop, doing graffiti and later began to devote himself to rap without knowing that both elements were part of the same movement. His first recordings were made for his mom's tapes, as it was the only way he could do it at the time. Later with the help of the internet he started downloading hip hop tracks until he found editing programs to perform his own music, then made his first album with some of his friends, forming the Alto Kalibre group. Their first album together was called Alto Kalibre Vol. 1.

But as each of these things changes, do our tastes also change to reflect the present, or remain fixed, reflecting our past? Here, we investigate how where a person lives shapes their musical preferences, using geographic relocation to construct quasi-natural experiments that measure short- and long-term effects. Analyzing comprehensive data on over 16 million users on Spotify, we show that relocation within the United States has only a small impact on individuals' tastes, which remain more similar to those of their past environments. We then show that the age gap between a person and the music they consume indicates that adolescence, and likely their environment during these years, shapes their lifelong musical tastes. Our results demonstrate the robustness of individuals' musical identity, and shed new light on the development of preferences. Music is the soundtrack of our lives. It reflects our personify [10{12]. mood and personality, as well as the important people, When a community forms around some kind of music, places, and times in our past [1]. • Latino Rap – Part 2
Latino Rap – Part 2 Intro/History As we discussed last time, many Chicano/Latino rappers do have a gang background (see my prior article on "Chicano Music: An Influence on Gang Violence and Culture”. At one time was on the NAGIA http://www.nagia.org/latino_rap.htm) Sgt. Ron Stallworth of the Utah Dept. of Public Safety has written four books on the subject of gangster rap and even testified at a capital homicide trial in Texas in which rap lyrics were the subject of the case in point. Law Enforcement around the country has become more and more concerned each year with the rap industry’s growing influence on gangs and crime. Det. Wayne Caffey of LAPD has also documented gang ties to many of these gangster rap groups. Rap is part of the Hip-Hop culture that started on the East Coast in the mid-seventies with such groups as the Sugar Hill Gang, Curtis Blow, and Grandmaster Flash. It is a diverse music style and one sub-group could be classified as "Gangster Rappers". Chicano/Latino MC’s may rap in English, Spanish, or Nahualt, or whatever. Increasingly, non-Latino artists are mixing Spanish lyrics in their music in an effort to reach out to the growing Latino market. Latinos have always been a part of the Hip-Hop scene. Early on, in New York, hip-hop break dancers like the Rock Steady Crew and "graffiti artist piecers" like Fidel Rodriquez were involved in the scene. But Latino MC’s did not enjoy that much success at first.

No. 2, 2014 INTRODUCTION: LOCATING HIP-HOP’S PLACE WITHIN LATIN AMERICAN CULTURAL STUDIES Christopher Dennis University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) In the summer of 2002, as a PhD student of Spanish (Latin American Literatures and Cultures), I was in Colombia conducting preliminary dissertation research when I inadvertently stumbled across the local hip-hop scene. Early one morning in Bogota while sitting in Cimarrón (an Afro-Colombian political and cultural organization), I noticed a poster of several young black rappers from a group called Ghettos Clan. As someone who witnessed hip-hop and rap’s explosion onto U.S. mainstream culture in the 1980s, I was naturally curious. However, I was in the country hoping to find an up-and-coming generation of Afro-Colombian fiction writers addressing contemporary issues impacting the country’s black communities—neoliberal economic reform, globalization, racism, narcotraffic, the armed conflict, etc. Above all, I wanted to know who was going to carry on the black literary traditions established by the likes of Manuel Zapata Olivella, Carlos Truque, and Arnoldo Palacios, to name a few. My quest, though, was not going well, and so with my trip coming to an end, I decided to give in to my whim and see where my interest in Afro-Colombian hip-hop and rap would lead. It was recommended that I visit Esperanza Bioho’s Fundación Cultural Colombia Negra (http://colombianegra.webs.com/). I was told that at this cultural arts center I would find young performers of Afro-Colombian “traditional” music and dance who, ironically, would be able to inform me about the national hip-hop scene, and more specifically, about local hip-hop artists.

Volume 12.1 & 12.2 Spring & Fall 2012 ''Don't ya know that 'l'm {oco?' iijo con SU _pisto{a en {a mano: Chicano 'Ra_p or the 'Renewa{ ef tfie Corriao 'T'racCition ~narea Perafes 'Fernaniez ie §am6oa 'Universiaaa ie{Pais Vasco The importance of oral tradition within the Mexican population living in the United States remains a consequence of the subaltern condition of the community. Their history is an account of an often harassed and discriminated society, whose folklore has been subjugated to a secondary status within the mainstream Anglo culture. The Mexican-Americans, nonetheless, have not been displaced in isolation; the African Am.ericans or the Asian Americans, among others, have also accompanied the Mexican Americans in their social struggles. In the specific case of the Chicano community, from the Mexican-American war of 1846 and· its subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, where the Mexican northern territories were annexed to the United States, to the farm workers' struggle led by Cesar Chavez, the Mexicans' diaspora in the United States has been loaded with discriminatory experiences. An excellent example of this racial segregation were the migratory movements that took place in numerous U.S. cities in the 1950s, where the great majority of white middle class families abandoned their houses in the inner-city areas for suburban neighborhoods. The post-industrial abandonment derived in the creation of ghettoized areas in the core-city, where poverty, joblessness and criminalization defmed the living conditions of the remaining populace, among whom the majority were ethnic minorities and low-income Anglos.

Battle of Los Angeles | 719 The Battle of Los Angeles: The Cultural Politics of Chicana/o Music in the Greater Eastside Victor Hugo Viesca Chicanos are, when you call yourself that, you know your history, you know where you came from, you know where you need to go. —Yoatl, Aztlán Underground1 I try to find my own Chicana sensibility in the dance. —Martha Gonzales, Quetzal2 ast Los Angeles is the center of a flourishing musical cultural scene with a renewed “Chicana/o” sensibility.3 This scene is being led by a E collective of socially conscious and politically active Latin-fusion bands that emerged in the 1990s, including Aztlán Underground, Blues Experiment, Lysa Flores, Ozomatli, Ollin, Quetzal, Quinto Sol, Slowrider, and Yeska. These groups compose original songs that weave together the sounds of the Ameri- cas, from soul, samba, and the son jarocho to reggae, rumba, and rap. Multilin- gual lyrics in Spanish, English, Cálo, or Nahuatl that speak to themes of urban exile, indigenous identity, and multiracial unity are layered over the music to produce a sonic Chicana/o imaginary of the global city in the twenty-first century.4 Several of the bands within the scene have released full-length al- bums on their own independent record labels such as Xicano Records and Film (Aztlán Underground and Quinto Sol), De Volada Records (Slowrider and Blues Experiment), and Lysa Flores’s Bring Your Love Records (see dis- cography). The bands often collaborate with one another, producing or play- ing on each other’s records and touring on the same bill.
