**EMGAROED UNTIL WEDNESDAY, MARCH 11 at 9:30AM/PT** STARZ PINS DOWN THREE SERIES REGULARS FOR “HEELS” Chris Bauer, Allen Maldonado and James Harrison Join Cast Download Images: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/aklpyls1hrlc71d/AADpmLbGRWIO20gZLfAqTWHga?dl=0 Santa Monica, Calif. – March 11, 2020 – Starz, a Lionsgate company (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B), today announced Chris Bauer (“The Deuce,” "True Blood," "The Wire"), Allen Maldonado (“The Last O.G.,” “Black-ish,” “You’re the Worst”) and two-time Super Bowl champion James Harrison (“S.W.A.T.”, Remember Amnesia) have been cast as series regulars in the STARZ Original series “Heels.” Chris Bauer will portray “Wild Bill Hancock,” a larger-than-life former wrestling star who is now a high-level pro wrestling scout. Allen Maldonado plays “Rooster Robbins,” one of the best wrestlers in the circuit who always has something to prove, and always backs it up. James Harrison, Jr. is cast in the role of “Apocalypse,” a been-around-the-block journeyman wrestler who’s been at it for decades and has no illusions of fame or glory. Chris Bauer most recently starred in "The Deuce" and “For All Mankind” and he portrayed Jimmy Flaherty for four seasons of the STARZ Original hit series “Survivor’s Remorse." He also starred in "True Blood," the award- winning FX limited series "The People vs. OJ Simpson" more STARZ PINS DOWN THREE SERIES REGULARS FOR “HEELS”– March 11, 2020 and is known for his acclaimed role as union boss “Frank Sobotka" in "The Wire." Bauer will next be seen opposite Denzel Washington in the Warner Bros. film The Little Things. Other film appearances include Clint Eastwood's Sully and Money Monster, directed by Jodie Foster. Bauer is repped Peg Donegan and attorney Ira Schreck. Allen Maldonado landed his first television role at the age of 21 in the daytime series “The Young & The Restless.” After recovering from a near-fatal car accident, he appeared in the Emmy®-nominated drama “Judging Amy” as well as “The Shield,” “Rizoli & Isles,” Straight Outta Compton, Cake, The Equalizer and the feature film remake of Superfly. Maldonado most recently appeared on “You’re the Worst,” “The Last O.G.” and “Black-ish.” In addition to acting, he also runs Get It Done Records record company, Only Son Productions and Vineyards Phinest t-shirt line where a portion of the proceeds go to his foundation, Demo Nerds which provides free acting classes and services for at-risk youth and foster children in the inner cities of Los Angeles. Maldonado is repped by Red Baron Management, CAA and attorneys Ira Schreck and Carolyn Conrad. James Harrison was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent after going undrafted in the 2002 NFL Draft. After being cut several times, he signed with the Steelers in 2004 and played 15 seasons in the NFL (Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots). The two-time Super Bowl Champion landed his first role on the big screen in the 2019 indie movie Remember Amnesia and had a guest-starring role in an episode of “S.W.A.T.” (“The B-Team”) that aired in 2019. Harrison is repped by UTA, attorney Jonathan Shikora and manager PR1 Communication. “Heels” is a story about the men and women who chase their dreams in the world of small town pro wrestling. Set in a close-knit Georgia community, it follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind. The series is written by Michael Waldron (“Loki,” “Rick and Morty”) with Mike O’Malley (“Survivor’s Remorse,” “Shameless”) serving as showrunner. Along with Waldron and O’Malley, LBI Entertainment’s Julie Yorn (Hell or High Water, White Boy Rick, The Dirt), Peter Segal (Get Smart, 50 First Dates, Tommy Boy, “Shameless”), Chris Donnelly and Patrick Walmsley will also serve as Executive Producers. “Heels” is produced by Lionsgate TV for STARZ in association with Paramount Television Studios. Cocreators David Simon and ed Burns, among others, fielded questions from critick en Tucker before taking inquiries from the audience. one woman, who introduced herself as a criminal attorney, credited the show’s many on-screen and offscreen contributors for their “realistic” elaboration of the investigation process. In the world of The Wire, a criminal investigation offers the narrative frame for each season. But, as a caveat to her praise, she offered one tar- geted counterpoint, a moment in the series in which histrionics seemed to trump authenticity. She highlighted a scene occurring toward the end of the first season, a breakthrough in the series’ first sustained case involving the Barksdale drug ring. In this episode, police investigators and a state attorney attempt to turn D’angelo Barksdale, wayward nephew of king- pin avon Barksdale, toward testifying against his uncle’s syndicate. Second Chances in The Wire: Perspectives from Psychology and the Judiciary The Hon. Rebecca R. Pallmeyer† & Dan P. McAdams†† ABSTRACT Playing off a scene in The Wire wherein prison inmates discuss whether Ameri- can lives have “second acts,” this essay considers psychological and legal issues at play in people’s efforts to turn their lives around, from bad to good. In the first half of the essay, a professor of psychology discusses empirical research into re- demptive life stories in which people find positive meaning in suffering and/or transform their lives from failure to relative success. While examples of redemp- tive life stories may be found in The Wire, making good on second chances seems to be a relatively rare occurrence. In the second half, a federal judge considers the issue of second chances in the American legal system, focusing on the issue of sen- tencing.

    Narrating “White Slavery!” in The Wire: A Generic Genealogy LAURA T. MURPHY, LOYOLA UNIVERSITY NEW ORLEANS According to conservative estimates compiled by the Walk Free Foundation in 2013, an estimated 30 million people are forced to toil as slaves in the world today. More than ten thousand men, women, and children are trafficked into the United States alone each year. Many of them are sold as sex slaves, while others are exploited as domestic, factory, and agricultural laborers. Though contemporary slavery typically does not announce itself in the antebellum form of chattel slavery familiar to Americans, the people who are called slaves today are indeed slaves as we historically understand the term — they are forced to work through threat of violence, with no pay beyond subsistence, and with little or no ability to escape.1 While government policy white papers, social science texts, and documentaries about this global crime rarely enjoy wide public attention, several more popular depictions of modern- day slavery have emerged recently in an attempt to interrupt the gaping silence regarding this serious issue.2 In 2003 the acclaimed Home Box Office (HBO) television series The Wire (2002 – 8) courageously addressed the issue of modern- day slavery and its effects on US politics, economics, and social values. Each season of The Wire introduces several new characters, a new crime to be investigated, and a new network of injustice that disturbs the fleeting tranquility of the city of Baltimore.
