Abstract: Kolli hills is located in Nammakal District, Tamilnadu , , has an area of 418.5 sq.km. The hill is bounded by Nammakal in the south and south west. is in the North east. Attur Taluk is in the North and in the east. Kolli hills are also called Sathuragiri or square hill. The hill contain of high rising peak and ravines. The highest point in Kolli hills is 4663 feet above M.S.L, but the general level of the upper surface of the hills is not more than 3500 feet( 1000m), Its eastern and northern flanks drain either into Thurayur valley or the valley of the Periyar.The present paper is educational status of the hill regions at the present decades. Including their status of the population with educational condition will be studied through Geographical Information System(GIS).

Introduction

The welfare and development of tribals has been given high priority right from the beginning of First Five Year plan, still it remains as most backward group in India on the three most important indicators of development i.e health, education, and income. The Kollimalai or Kolli Hills are one of the seven hill ranges constituting the of , situated in district. It lies west of the Pacchaimalais, with a total area of 503 sq. km. The altitude ranges from 180 m to 1415 m above sea level. It is 32 km away from the Namakkal town and 120 km away from the study centre. Geographically it is situated between 11° 10’ 00” to 11° 30’ 00” N and 78° 15’ 00” to 78° 30’ 00” E (Fig.1). The tribals who live in the Kolli hills and the adjacent hills like the , the , the Javadi hills, the Pachamalai hills are called ‘Malayalis’ or hill-dwellers. Among the total population of Kolli hills 94.8% are tribal’s as per the Census of India (1991). The houses are situated in elevated rocky places. The number of houses per hamlet ranges from 10 to 200. The main occupation is agriculture and cattle rearing. They cultivate paddy as wet crop and the tapioca, the

The fruit crops such as jack, pineapple, citrus, guava, mango, banana are also grown. The houses are mostly made of mud walls and thatched roofs.(Map No.1) Objectives

The aim of the study is find and trace out the education status of the hilly area with their accessibilities of the tribal villages. The following objectives

• To study the present school locations with tribal villages • To measure the distance from the remote villages with schools in the various categories. • To analysis the mean distance and maximum distance of the schools in tribal villages with new sites through GIS.

Research Methodology

The present study focus to educational status and mean distance of schooling in and around of the kolli hill environment. The base line information of schools and other educational points with benefit of the tribal villages in the study area mapped through the field visit with Survey of India toposheet, scale of 1:50,000 and Arc/GIS software.

Result and Discussion

Literate Population

As per the census hand book 2011, census of tamilnadu, showing the literate population of the kolli hill with 16 revenue villages given table No.1. The total literate population is 21073, the male Population is 12240 and Female population is 8833. The highest literate population is Valavanthinadu, Ariyurnadu,Valapuranadu, and Bailnadu, the lowest Literate population is Adakkampudukombai and Pelappadinadu. The moderate literate population is located in Thirupulinadu, chithurnadu and Periaikkarinadu.( Map No.2)

The most of the literate villages located mean centre of the study area with good accessible transport with road network. The infrastructure and schooling facilities is available valavanthinadu, Valappurnadu,Bailnadu, and Selurnadu. The Educational points are available wherever possible the easy transport facilities with over population. The fig No.1 showing the literate population in and around of the kolli hill (Census 2011). Its showing the literate status in the study area like Valavanthinadu, Ariyurnadu and Valappurnadu.

Illiterate Population

As per the census of Tamilnadu 2011, the table No.2 showing the illiterate population of Kolli hill is 19406, the Male Population is 8622, Female Population is 10784. The highest ratio of illiterate population is Bailnadu,Valappurnadu, Gundaninadu and Ariyurnadu, the lowest literate population is Adakkampudukombai, Pelappadinadu and Alathurnadu.(Map No.3)

Socio-economic status with schooling

Social status with economic importance of the particular area or region like hill area of the kolli environment is one of the unique with potential tourism activities in the present days, improving the infrastructure and facilities by the government of tamilnadu . The educational condition of the study area were improved the schooling in the hill top. It is attracting the public’s and also outside of the tamilnadu.The region have both government and private organization have run the primary to higher secondary level. The

Conclusion

The conclusion of the present study for educational status of the schooling and other educations in and around of the kolli hills. The major focus for the literate and Illiterate population among the 16 villages in the kolli hills. The highest literate population is Bailnadu, Valavanthinadu, Valappurnadu, Gundarnadu and Ariyurnadu, the male literate population is high and low in Female population. The location is come under the potential resources and Physiography in nature occupied forest, soil, water and agriculture engaged to tribal’s. The government implementing the so many social awareness programe by NGO’s. The NGO’s also role to counseling to tribal communities for school going children , women’s and youths.
