Doves Type Font Free Download doves type font free download The Doves Type® In 2013, after three years of research and drawing, Robert Green released a facsimile font of the lost Doves Type through Typespec. However, following the acquisition of a greater range of archive material in 2014, Green began to update his digital version of the typeface. In order to create a definitive reproduction he decided that the original metal sorts, lying on the riverbed, would have to be examined. In 2016, Green undertook more work to improve the digital font for contemporary usage. This latest release of the updated Doves Type contains extended glyph coverage including small caps, together with both lining and tabular figures. Metrics have also been adjusted for 21st century usage. The original Doves Press type, cut for letterpress with its physical constraints and inherent quirks, contains spacing which would appear uncomfortable to modern eyes in web and litho applications. Doves Type [Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson] Doves Type was from Doves Press, founded in 1900 by Thomas J. Cobden-Sanderson (a disciple of William Morris) and Emery Walker. They had type based on Jenson. Thomas J. Cobden-Sanderson threw the typefaces in the Thames when the press closed in 1916 to prevent anyone from using it again. Ben Archer writes: although William Morris's Golden Type predated this design, it is thought that the Doves Type was more faithful to the design of the original Venetian type of the fifteenth century. Punches were cut by Edward Prince on the instructions of Walker and Cobden Sanderson in a single size and weight only, and used for printing the Doves Press edition of the Bible. This celebrated type was used privately for sixteen years and never released to the general trade. It was lost to history forever when Cobden Sanderson threw the entire font into the Thames river, provoking a bitter argument with his business partner, the master printer Emery Walker. Cobden-Sanderson was born in 1840 in Alnwick, Northumberland, and died in London in 1922. Doves Press Type (1994, Torbjörn Olsson). A six-font family. The Doves Type (2013-2015, Robert Green). THE DOVES TYPE® ¶ Robert Green’s facsimile of the famous Doves Press typeface, a digital reconstruion devised using the original metal type salvaged in 2014 from London’s River Thames. THE DOVES PRESS WAS FOUNDED IN 1900 by T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, in partnership with photo-engraver Emery Walker, in Hammersmith, London. During nearly seventeen years of operation, the Doves Press produced some of the finest & most notable examples of twentieth century typography. The distinguishing & most celebrated feature of its books was a specially devised fount of metal type, known variously as Doves Roman, the Doves Press Fount of Type, or simply the Doves Type. When the partnership was formally dissolved in 1909, a settlement was proposed whereby the two men would share the type; Cobden-Sanderson could retain its exclusive use to continue printing Doves Press publications until his death, whereupon ownership would then pass to Walker. Nonetheless, after the Doves Press was closed in 1917, an epitaph appeared in the press’s final publication announcing that Cobden-Sanderson had ‘bequeathed’ the type to the bed of the River Thames.     INTRODUCTION BYTHE EDITOR HEN Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne- Jones, William Morris, and some fellow-artists painted on the damp walls of the Oxford Un- ion debating hall in 1857, their ignorance of fresco technique led them to produce haunt- ing images of the Middle Ages which, in ghostly fashion, began to fade almost immedi- ately; but the more permanent legacy of this episode was a body of richly revealing anecdotes about the Pre- Raphaelites themselves. Burne-Jones, for example, recalled that Mor- ris was so fanatically precise about the details of medieval costume Figure 1 that he arranged for "a stout little smith" in Oxford to produce a suit of armor which the painters could use as a model. When the basinet arrived, Morris at once tried it on, and Burne-Jones, working high above, looked down and was startled to see his friend "embedded in iron, dancing with rage and roaring inside" because the visor would not lift.1 This picture of Morris imprisoned and blinded by a piece of medie- val armor is an intriguing one: certainly it hints at an interpretation of his career that is not very flattering. But we ought to set alongside it another anecdote, from the last decade of Morris's life, the symbol- ism of which seems equally potent. Early in November 1892, young Sydney Cockerell, recently hired by Morris to catalogue his incunab- ula and medieval manuscripts, spent the entire day immersed in that remote age while studying materials in Morris's library. As evening approached, he emerged again into the nineteenth century (or so he thought) and climbed the staircase of Kelmscott House: "When I went up into the drawing room to say goodnight Morris and his wife were playing at draughts, with large ivory pieces, red and white.

This act, which had been in his mind for some six years was illegal as the types were the property of his former partner Emery Walker. After his death, in 1922 the matter led to a protracted lawsuit with his widow Annie which, after the intervention of friends, was finally settled out of court. The whole saga of the ‘Doves Face Roman’ was a curious episode in the English Arts and Crafts movement. William Morris’s ‘Golden’ type lay treasured in the British Museum, Charles Ricketts’ ‘Vale’ and ‘Avon’ types already rested upon the bottom of the Thames at Hammersmith and no one has ever made an attempt to recover those, but the Doves types, just like the Doves Bindery bindings, were venerated perfect.
