Biographie de l'auteurAlexandre Dumas was born July 24, 1802, at Villiers-Cotterets, France, the son of Napoleon's famous mulatto general, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, who eventually fell from favor and died impoverished when his son was only four. Alexandre Dumas began writing at an early age and saw his first success in a play he wrote entitled Henri III et sa Cour (1829). A prolific author who also had to battle racism throughout his life, Dumas was politically active, taking part in the Revolution of 1830 and later working for the cause of Italian unification. Among his most famous historical novels, which he often wrote with collaborators (primarily Auguste Maquet) and which were typically serialized in the press, are The Three Musketeers (1844), The Count of Monte Cristo (1844-45), and The Man in the Iron Mask (1848-50). Dumas made and lost several fortunes, and died penniless on December 5, 1870. This article aims to analyze the meaning of index found in characterizations in the novel the Man in the Iron Mask by Alexandre Dumas. This article involved the descriptive qualitative method. The results revealed that there are many causal relations between the index and the characterization of the characters found in that novel. It contained 24 characterizations from eight major and five minor characters that had been representative of this article. From this article, it is obtained more information about the identified characterizations found in the novel and its index analysis that showed its causalities relation between the sign and the object (index and characterization) in a more comprehensive meaning. Since semiotics is the study of signs and novel is a literary work, it is recommended to English literature lecturers and students to enrich knowledge of analyzing literary works through semiotic analysis.

By using a novel as the main material source, the film maker hopes the viewer has a big curious feeling to the film which is adopted from their favorite novel. Man in the Iron Mask for example, it is presented to the movie version by Randall Wallace as the director and uses Alexandre Dumas Père’s novel with the same title. Before Man in the Iron Mask, Alexandre Dumas Père has been written “The Three Musketeers” in 19 century, and still in the same century then he wrote it. Man in the Iron Mask had been nearly twenty years since the last of Alexandre Dumas’ novels about the fames Musketeers was translated to the big screen. Randall Wallace chooses Leonardo DiCaprio, Gabriel Byrne, Anne Parillaud, Jeremy Iron, John Malkovich, and Gerard Dipardieu to play their role.

    The Man in the Iron Mask, by Alexandre Dumas In A Nutshell In the beginning, there was The Three Musketeers. (Shortly afterward, there was the Shmoop guide. Go check it out.) Next, there was Twenty Years After. Finally, there was The Vicomte de Bragelonne. Together, the three books are known as Alexandre Dumas's D'Artagnan Romances and cover many years of adventures and swordfights, chronicling the lives of four Musketeers. The books were originally published in serial form, meaning they appeared one chapter at a time in the Parisian newspaper Le Siécle. This explains why Dumas's chapters are fairly self-contained and tend to end with a cliff hanger. He needed to retain readers. You can think of the serial form as the 18th century equivalent of a weekly sitcom that keeps the attention of its audience from one week to the next. When The Vicomte de Bragelonne was put together for publication in book form, English translators took one look and realized it was too long. They typically break it up into smaller volumes - sometimes three, sometimes four. No matter how they slice it, they always entitle the last chunk The Man in the Iron Mask.     The Valet: The Marquis de Louvois’s Invited Guest in the Mystery of the Man in the Iron Mask by Sarah Madry Prefatory Remarks on the Spelling of Names The last name of the man known as the Man in the Iron Mask is spelled “Dauger” except where another author’s spelling is quoted. A seventeenth-century Paris family of minor nobility will be dis- cussed. That family’s name is spelled “d’Auger de Cavoye,” except where another author’s spelling is quoted. Why Solving the Problem of the Man in the Iron Mask Is Important for Scholars of French Seventeenth-century History This article addresses one description of the mysterious prisoner called L’Homme au masque de fer written in a letter, dated 19 July 1669, by the government official who oversaw his transfer to prison, Louis XIV’s (1638–1715) twenty-eight-year-old secretary for war, François-Michel Le Tellier, the marquis de Louvois (1641–1691). Louvois characterized Dauger in that letter as “only a valet.” Scholars have been compelled to incorporate this description of the prisoner into their theories about his identity. The search for the answer to this mystery has been tangled up in the demand of the “valet” to be consequential. This paper shows that, contrary to what has always been assumed, Louvois’s characterization of the prisoner as “un valet” does not describe the prisoner’s background or previous occupation, nor did Louvois intend it to. The word “valet” is a keyword in a pun that Louvois inserted into the state document that he wrote to the prison jailer, whom he knew person- ally.

If you have skipped the novels between The Three Musketeers and this, a few notes will bring you into the story: THE On one side – Aramis, now a bishop and secretly the head of the Jesuits, who believes he has IN found a path to a higher honor – the papacy. Aramis’ ally Monsieur Fouquet, the wealthy minister of finance. Philippe, the identical twin of King Louis XIV, who grew up in ignorance of his pedigree, and whose foster parents were murdered on the king’s order and himself sent to THE MAN solitary confinement in the notorious Bastille.
