During the first part of the siege, the Duchies regiment was actively employed in the service of garrison that were in the town. But the besieged were aware of the setbacks that hit the French army; since the successive failures of Marshal Oudinot and Marshal Ney at Großbeeren and Jüterbock, Saxony had to be evacuated and the great battle of Leipzig decided the general retreat of the army of the Emperor Napoleon. The Confederation of the Rhine cracked and dissolved: the Royal Saxon army had passed into the ranks of the Coalition, Bavaria separated from France, all Germany rising against the one she greeted the day before still calling him "Savior" and of "Protector" .... Also, desertion became considerable among the soldiers of the Duchies Regiment; at the end of October, the detachments sent to external work were reduced by half. General Le Marois, governor of Magdeburg, resolved to put an end to this disturbing state of affairs. On 12 November, the Duchies regiment received the order of to go, unarmed, in a capote and a garrison cap, in front of the governor's house: it then had 361 men, plus 164 soldiers in the hospitals. General Le Marois himself drove the regiment to the advanced works and, having arrived there, had the Saxons choose to return immediately to their homes, or return to the town to serve there now as a good and loyal soldiers; the first alternative is accepted unanimously.

  • Of Saxony's Decorations and Medals, Perhaps the Most Important
    This book is the third volume in his series on the aviation awards of Imperial Germany during World War I, and like the two previous volumes (Bavaria and Prussia) is superb in all respects. Volume III explores the awards of the Kingdom of Saxony, a region that had long been embroiled in conflict and turmoil, and whose capital city (Dresden) was to become the site of the most fearsome bombing raids of World War I1. Of Saxony’s decorations and medals, perhaps the most important was the Military Order of St. Henry, which was founded on October 7, 1736 by Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. It predates many of the other pre- eminent German orders, including Prussia’s Pour le Merite (1740) and Bavaria’s Military Order of max Joseph (1797). It was originally instituted in one class for award to officers of the Royal saxon Army, but was later enlarged to three classes in 1768 (Grand Cross, Commander, and Knight). The Commander grade was divided into a First and Second class in 1829. During the First World War 2,717 awards of the order were made, of which 107 went to aviators. The lion’s share of O’Connor’s book is the chapter that discusses this order, which provides a wealth of information on the order itself and includes the citations of all 107 aviation recipients. Like the book as a whole, this chapter is liberally illustrated with photos of the recipients, their awards,and their aircraft. The other principal Saxon awards are also covered.

    The Napoleon Series Reviews Rawkins, W.J. The Royal Saxon Army: 1792 – 1814. History Bookman, 2016. E-Book. 312 pages. £4. The Royal Saxon Army is the 11th book in Bill Rawkins “Armies and Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars”. The original titles were first published about 40 years ago and after a long hiatus, Mr. Rawkins has decided to republish them with major revisions to each one. The original pamphlets were paperbacks and only about 30 pages long with four pages of black and white line drawings. A review of these original books can be seen at The W. J. Rawkins Uniform Books. Unfortunately the books were very flimsy and all my copies have long since fallen apart. In the past two years Mr. Rawkins has begun re-publishing new versions of many of the books. The new editions have been expanded to a minimum of 75 pages to over 300 pages. The expansion also includes hundreds of color images. The book begins with a short history of the Confederation of the Rhine and then jumps immediately into the history of the Saxon Army in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. There are sixty pages of information on their campaigns. The bulk of the book however looks at the different regiments and units that made up the army. Institutional Clients 54 Foreword The Saxon Electoral Court stands for one of the most important collections of arms and armor in the world. Rich deposits of silver let to a tremendous wealth of Saxony in the 16th and 17th centuries that were spent for a prestigious courtly life encompassing fine arms for tournament use, representation and the equipment of life guards. Even the latter impress by their extravagant decoration and manufacture documenting the fact that these arms not only served a practical function of defense but also were intended to emphasize the prestige and luxury of the Electors. Besides the precondition of wealth it was a deep-rooted culture at the court and later at the museums who took care for the inventory, which favoured conditions that allowed this treasure to overcome the centuries in an extraordinary well state of preservation. Many courts in Europe had wonderful collections of arms and armor, but at Dresden the items have been taken care for with outstanding conscientiousness in the course of time. Consequently the objects are often in a near flawless condition with leather being preserved, iron surviving without any larger traces of corrosion or blued surfaces still intact. It seems unnecessary to mention that suchlike exhibits appear very attractive for art lovers, collectors and museums of international significance alike.

    Republican Bayonets on the Rhine – Scenario Designer Notes Introduction Republican Bayonets on the Rhine (hereafter RBR) covers the battles from the beginning of the French Revolutionary Wars in 1792 to their final conclusion on the fields of Hohenlinden in 1800. More than just a companion game to Campaign Marengo it defines the era more precisely with the evolution of the French army of the “levee en masse,” First and Second Amalgamations, to the professional army it had become by the end of the War of the Second Coalition. The project goes back to 2008 when initial production on the battles of Hohenlinden, First and Second Zürich, Würzburg and Bergen took place. With an array of artwork that dwarfs that of Campaign Marengo by a factor of almost 5:1 the entire range of European armies that fought in the major battles of this time period. Organization The five major subdivisions which are included in RBR includes the early campaigns (one entity), the Rhine Campaign of 1796 (Charles vs. Moreau and Jourdan), the Rhine Campaign of 1799 (Charles vs. Jourdan and Masséna), the Noord-Holland Campaign of 1799 (Brune vs. York) and the Rhine Campaign of 1800. A large list of military units was compiled that participated in the campaigns. More than two hundred and forty images represent the military units that fought in the battles covered in the product. The team went with the concept that better scenarios and fewer variants would lead to a more enjoyable experience for the players. Thus many of the variants were playtested as much as the historical scenarios.

While many artists produce their greatest work in youth or middle age, some save their best for last; they astound with a late flowering of creativity, building on a lifetime's work, but surpassing anything that has come before. Such was the case with John Theodore Muller, a man who had been recognised as a very talented carver and modeller from his early days, and whose work had won him well deserved accolades. As an artist, however, he had not established a reputation of any significance until 1939 when, already past retirement age, he was contracted to execute stone carvings for the new campus of the University of Queensland at St Lucia. Muller's work at the University soon attracted attention. Brisbane had seen nothing like it before, and in the final years of his life he became a local celebrity. His death, in 1953, was front-page news in Brisbane. Since then, admiration of his sculpture has only increased, partly as a result of the work of Rhyl Hinwood, his successor as sculptor to the University of Queensland. And yet Muller's career has received little serious study. Perhaps this is because his personal papers were all destroyed in a house fire shortly before his death; it has been assumed that, without that material, it is impossible to properly assess Muller's career.
