1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. The festival presents 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. A portion of the festival’s income goes toward on-going renovations at the theatre. The festival brings together the films’ producers, writers, actors and directors to help showcase their work. A film- maker or scholar introduces each film, and each screening is followed by a substantive on-stage Q&A discussion among filmmakers, critics and the audience. In addition to the screenings, the festival hosts a number of academic panel discussions featuring filmmaker guests, scholars and students. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked.

Contact: Voleine Amilcar, ITVS [email protected] or 415-356-8383, ext., 244 PBS Series Independent Lens Announces Agreement to Acquire Brett Morgen’s CHICAGO 10 From Participant Media and River Road Entertainment to Headline New Season Film Explores the Buildup to and Unraveling of the Chicago Conspiracy Trial After the 1968 Democratic Convention (San Francisco, CA)— The Emmy and Peabody Award–winning PBS series Independent Lens, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Participant Media and River Road Entertainment to acquire the U.S. television broadcast rights for CHICAGO 10 for the upcoming season. The film was theatrically released earlier this year by Roadside Attractions. “CHICAGO 10 is a perfect match for Independent Lens,” said series producer Lois Vossen. “Brett Morgen’s innovative film is part documentary, part historical drama, part animation and completely compelling—this film is aimed directly at the younger, more diverse audience that we continue to bring to PBS.” Written and directed by Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture), CHICAGO 10 presents contemporary history with a forced perspective, mixing bold and original animation with extraordinary archival footage and an explosive soundtrack that explores the buildup to and unraveling of the Chicago Conspiracy Trial. With animated representations of all the key figures of the trial voiced by top independent film talent (Hank Azaria, Mark Ruffalo, Dylan Baker, Jeffrey Wright, Liev Schreiber, Nick Nolte and the late Roy Scheider), CHICAGO 10 brings the events of 1968 to a new generation of audiences. “Some may believe that the events of 1968 are ancient history, but in this election year, with a hotly contested race and millions of young voters participating for the first time, this story has never been more relevant,” added Vossen.

  • This Is Congo
PRESENTS THIS IS CONGO In honor of the 58th Anniversary of The Democratic Republic of Congo’s Independence In Theaters beginning June 29, 2018 A film by Daniel McCabe Language: English, French, Swahili and Lingala with English subtitles The Democratic Republic of the Congo / United States / Canada / Qatar Run Time: 91 minutes PRESS CONTACT Victoria Vargas / [email protected] Erica Abrams / [email protected] 212.445.7100 SYNOPSIS Why is it that some countries seem to be continually mired in cyclical wars, political instability and economic crises? The Democratic Republic of the Congo is one such a place, a mineral-rich Central African country that, over the last two decades, has seen more than five million conflict-related deaths, multiple regime changes and the wholesale impoverishment of its people. Yet though this ongoing conflict is the world’s bloodiest since WWII, little is known in the West about the players or stakes involved. THIS IS CONGO provides an immersive and unfiltered look into Africa’s longest continuing conflict and those who are surviving within it. By following four compelling characters — a whistleblower, a patriotic military commander, a mineral dealer and a displaced tailor — the film offers viewers a truly Congolese perspective on the problems that plague this lushly beautiful nation. Colonel ‘Kasongo’, Mamadou Ndala, Mama Romance and Hakiza Nyantaba exemplify the unique resilience of a people who have lived and died through the generations due to the cycle of brutality generated by this conflict. Though their paths never physically cross, the ongoing conflict reverberates across all of their lives. When THIS IS CONGO begins in 2012, Rwandan and Ugandan-backed M23 rebels have begun massing in the North Kivu region of Congo, threatening peace and stability.

Roger Ebert’s Film Festival 2013 April 17–21, 2013 Roger Ebert, Programmer and Host Chaz Ebert, Executive Producer Nate Kohn, Festival Director Mary Susan Britt, Associate Director More information about the festival can be found at www.ebertfest.com Mission Roger Ebert, 1964 University of Illinois Journalism graduate and Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic, comes to Urbana-Champaign each spring to host Ebertfest. The mission of Roger Ebert’s Film Festival is to praise films, genres and formats that have been overlooked by audiences, critics and distributors. Each year, Mr. Ebert selects 12 films representing a cross-section of important cinematic works. They include films without distributors, independent and studio films that did not win wide audiences, formats such as 70mm, silent films, and overlooked genres like the documentary. The films are screened in the 1,500-seat Virginia Theatre, a restored movie palace built in the 1920s. Festival guests who help showcase the features include producers, writers, actors and directors. Following each screening, Mr. Ebert leads discussions with the filmmakers for general audi- ences, distributors and critics from around the world. There are also a number of campus wide panel discussions featuring Mr. Ebert, festival guests and academic scholars. We work to keep the festival small enough so that a sense of community can develop among the audience, filmmakers, guests, students and scholars. The festival is a non-profit event of the College of Media at Illinois.
