Brunei Darussalam wins HBT 2012 (26/2/2012)

Brunei Darussalam emerged as the champion for the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) for ASEAN Youth Football Championship 2012 after Indonesia 2-0.

The Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas where the tournament was held recorded a full attendance of supporters from both teams.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Muizzaddin Waddaulah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to present the prize to the champion, whom received trophy, medals and $ 20,000 cash prize.

Meanwhile, the first-runner up, received medals and $ 10,000 cash prize presented by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, Senior Minister at Prime Ministers Office.

The Fair Play was awarded to while national team player, Adi Said received Best Player award.

The final match was also attended by His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, His Royal Highness Haji Jefri Bolkiah and His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Malik and other members of the royal family.

The championship was participated by 9 ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste and officially opened on February 25 by His Majesty.

It was a sweet success for the national team to win the ASEAN-level football championship which was initiated by His Majesty.

On August 27, 1997, His Majesty in his titah (royal speech) at the Institute of Diplomatic and Foreign Relations, Kuala Lumpur stated that sports can reach out to people in all walks of life. Of all spectator sports, soccer has the greatest followers.

Further in the titah, His Majesty said that, having an ASEAN or Southeast Asian soccer league will deepen awareness of ordinary people of ASEAN countries.

"Let all the best teams of our region compete in the League. If Europe can have a European League, Latin- America a Latin-America League and Africa its African League, why is there not a Southeast Asian League?,

Later in 2002, the first Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy (HBT) for ASEAN Youth Football Championship was held. The inaugural HBT was won by Indonesia; followed by Thailand in 2005 and 2007.

This years HBT was organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) in collaboration with the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF).
