Christmas Message from the Principals It’s been a year of change and uncertainty. The Christmas story is set at a time of great unrest and political turmoil and peace came in the form of a child Jesus. As we reflect and consider the year passed whilst we tuck into an abundance of food and gifts, perhaps give a thought to this and how we might also go into next year offering peace and forgiveness to friends and family, and love and support to one another.

We are certain that if we can embrace this message of support for one another that the determination and hard work demonstrated this term by students will continue to flourish as we enter Spring. We are really proud of the determination our students have shown in their studies this term. Our average payslip is now £50 so on average students are receiving 13 merits a week, which is up from the first half term. Merits are given when students excel in one of our five values: Excellence, Family, Politeness, Determination and Love.

As well as working exceptionally hard in lessons and their assessments we’ve had an exciting and enriching half term at the . Some of the highlights of this term have been the trips that our staff have generously organised. Our students have been out to watch ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’, visited Whitechapel to learn about Jack the Ripper, and a group of Year 10s have taken part in the Amnesty International Students Conference. We are hugely proud of our students who took part in the music showcase at Oasis Southbank and in the 1000 Christmas Miracles, where students sung for residents at Buxton Lodge Care Home and raised money through food collections and bake sales. We would also like to thank everyone who supported us at our annual Christmas Fair.

We are continuing to strengthen the careers support that we provide students and this term we have taken Year 11 students to an apprenticeships fair at the Excel centre. Employees from the Ministry of Justice also visited the Academy to provide each of our Year 11s with a mock college interview to help them prepare for the wold of work. We were also very lucky to host Cathy Newman, presenter from Channel 4 News, who spoke to our media students about careers in journalism.

Thank you to all of the parents who have completed our parent survey that was sent out earlier this month. We are reviewing your feedback and, as ever, appreciate your support in ensuring that we provide an excellent education for our family of students.

Whatever it is that you are doing this festive season, we hope that the time is restful and peaceful and that the celebration of Christmas is a good one. Happy Christmas from all at the Academy and a blessed and prosperous New Year.

A Booth C Green Executive Principal Associate Principal Well done for the completion of a successful first term!

The best thing I have done since I’ve been teaching is become a Family Leader, and being Family Leader to this delightful Year 7 Family has added to my joy.

The Year 7s have settled into Oasis Academy seamlessly - constantly showing love and politeness to one another. They have been involved in many school activities including the advent assemblies where the Year 7 choir performed infront of the whole school, as well as signing in Makaton in assembly. The Year 7 Rugby team were also victorious in their match against ; you could hear their chants along the corridor after they had won.

I met with the Year 7 Student Council, who represent the student voice, recently and I couldn’t be more contented with the maturity they showed in the meeting. They had positive views and expressed their concerns politely. They reported that they love the merits because it encourages students to work harder and achieve, but equally appreciate the demerits as it helps to prepare them for life beyond OAC. Overall, it was good to learn that they feel happy, safe, and well looked after at our Academy.

The Year 7s have had an incredible first term and I look forward to seeing them demonstrate excellence and determination for many more.

Have a wonderful Christmas!

Best wishes,

Ms Ogundele Year 7 Family Leader

We would like to say a special thank you to Mrs Richardson for all her hard work and dedication that made the service possible. Thanks also to the FOAC for providing the yummy refreshments.

Under the Sea

Year 7 students have been working on an ‘Under the Sea’ project in Textiles this term. In this project they have explored a range of different Textiles techniques including hand embroidery, couching, foam prints, shaving foam marbling, tie and dye, and using the sewing machine. For their inspiration they have looked at the different areas that could be found under the sea and incorporated the work of Textile artists Carolyn Saxby and Linda Steele. The final outcome was to produce a fabric collage which we think looks fantastic!

Our students have been incredibly busy in their French, German and Spanish lessons this term. They have been working on a variety of skills and have been having fun with dictation activities.

Our Year 11 students have prepared well for their mock speaking examinations and their commitment to their language learning is fantastic. Our hugely successful European Day of Languages in September was followed by the MFL Culture Quiz this half term. During the October half term all students were given one of a French, German or Spanish Culture Quiz sheet to research and complete. They had to investigate topics including history, geography, food, drink, arts, media and sport. On their return to school we tested their new found cultural knowledge and the results were amazing! Every Thursday Lunch time a group of students from Years 7 and 8 take part in the Maths Games Club held in F18.

There are lots of Maths themed games available and students have been enjoying the opportunity to put what they learn in lessons into practice. We have had a lot of students join us this term which is fantastic, but new members are always welcome.

I hope that everyone has had an enjoyable and productive half term. It’s been a busy one, and it’s become increasingly dark and damp as the term has gone on, but we’re nearly done and have the holiday to look forward to!

It’s been quite a busy half term for Year 9 as they’ve continued to work through the opening stanza of their careers as GCSE students. It has been a pleasure to pop into lessons and see the quality of work being completed, as well as hear staff feedback.

In PSHE, students have been learning about bank accounts, part-time work and their own health and wellbeing. This is important to us, as it helps the students to develop beyond the classroom. Coming up in the spring term, students will be learning about a variety of different STEM careers, and some of the variety of careers they can enter using Maths, Science, Computing, etc.

In a proud moment for the year group, our own Shreya Chandran won the Academy’s Spelling Bee competition, managing to come through the competition within her class, then within the year group, and finally beating the winners from the other year groups. Congratulations Shreya on your achievement.

I hope that everyone has a relaxing holiday, and that Santa (or the Holiday Armadillo) treats you well.

Mr Falvey Year 9 Family Leader Congratulations to all students that took part in the Children in Need on Thursday 13th November. It was so encouraging to see students keen to get involved in this National event. The cake sale raised lots, and completely sold out of the hundreds of cakes baked by students (and we suspect a little help from some parents!). The academy has never been so silent with over forty students carrying out a sponsored silence, as well as onesies of all shapes and sizes. 2019 saw the return of the Oasis Academy Coulsdon Spelling Bee – and Inwhat assembly a year this it halfwas! term we were delighted, along with the mentors, to present certificates to many of our family for their outstanding attitude to learning. All four of our finalists showed great signs of rigour, resilience and passion as well as intellect, poise and recollection as they battled it out to be crowned the Oasis Academy Coulsdon, Spelling Bee Champion.

Our first cycle of lexemes took the form of a practise round, followed by two cycles of ‘seen’ words which students had studied. Our third cycle of spellings unfortunately saw Preet knocked out, yet this was not without a valiant effort against increasingly challenging vocabulary! Our fourth cycle of words was where we began to see our champion emerge as Kelly, Shreya and Richan were vying for supremacy. Words such as ‘marginalisation’, ‘laborious’, destabilisation’, paradoxical’, ‘capricious’ and ‘assimilation’ had already been spelt with ease by our finalists before we were introduced to our final two contestants!

A fantastic display by Kelly, before a slight inaccuracy in her spelt word, could only take her as far as the final three, but yet again, this was following a noble and worthy set of correctly spelt words. It was now Shreya and Richan who entered the head to head stage with both spellers slipping at the same point! Richan, extremely close to correctly spelling his word, was highly unfortunate (only a letter out!) and it was Shreya who eventually took home the Spelling Bee trophy!

I would like to say a big congratulations to Shreya, and well done to all of the Spelling Bee finalists as well as all participants across the stages.

Mr Harris English Department

Students and staff at Oasis Academy Coulsdon paid tribute to all those who have served and fought for their country this half term by observing a two minute silence at 11am on Armistice day; the Last Post played throughout the Academy as staff and students stopped to reflect. The Academy attended the Remembrance Sunday service at St John’s church and laid a wreath at the war memorial. Music Lessons We are lucky enough to be able to offer taster lessons for £25 per half term for 30 minute lessons on the following instruments: Violin, Flute, Clarinet, and Saxophone. We have some spaces still for lessons in the new year. If you are interested please contact [email protected] Students will get free hire of instruments for the duration of the lessons.

Season’s Greetings to you all! We have had a very busy half term with Year 8 full of hard work and achievements. The new PSHE curriculum is now in full swing with some students heading to a self-esteem conference and Year 8 being part of a whole school Women’s Aid “Healthy Relationships” assembly. So far this term within PSHE Year 8 and their mentors have been looking at helpfulness, friendships and conflict, different types of family, the Oasis 9 habits, healthy relationships and an introduction into careers.

Next term for PSHE we will be delving deeper into further education and careers with a particular focus on PE and History. Although there is a focus on 2 subjects, the content learnt will be transferable for all subjects. We will also be looking at study skills which stu- dents should be building upon ready for the start of their GCSE courses.

The end of this term was wonderfully celebrated with the Carol Service where Ruby and Maia played the trombone and trumpet! It was great to see such talent and I look forward to even more talent from Year 8 shining through the rest of the academic year.

We are lucky as we get 2 new years….. A new academic year and a new calendar year. It is easy to make resolutions that in reality we will not keep, but I urge Year 8 to look at the Oasis 9 habits from their PSHE books and try to come up with a resolution based around one of them.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and happy New Year! I wish you all a restful and peaceful break.

Mrs Holt, Year 8 Family Leader

KS4 Science It’s been great to see the Year 9 and Year 10 girls getting stuck into their studies every Wednesday lunchtime. Thank you for your commitment girls- Mr N. Year 11 Update

I cannot believe that this will be my last Christmas newsletter for this year group. The last four years have gone so quickly. As I write this Year 11 are in the middle of their first of two GCSE mocks. It has been extremely busy for them but I hope that this experience will help them to develop on areas where their knowledge is not as strong as it should be. To celebrate the end of these mocks all Year 11 have been invited to a day ice skating in Reigate Park. I am very much looking forward to seeing them all there and enjoying themselves on the ice.

The first Year 11 parents’ evening will be on the 9th January. I am looking forward to seeing all the students and parents there where hopefully they will be celebrating how well your child is doing. These evenings are very important to attend as they give you the opportunity to discuss how you can help your child in furthering their knowledge and skills, and their grades will be shared and fed back to all the parents at this parents evening.

Attendance is still a high priority for the Academy and students need to endeavour to make sure they achieve at least 97% attendance. We have had quite a bit of sickness recently so students really need to make sure that they attend school as this is such an important part of progressing and getting those high grades. Coming in when they feel under the weather shows a strong character and will be good practice for when they are out in the working world. It is particularly important in Year 11 as colleges ask for student’s attendance in the references that I have to write.

This term many students have had one to one careers talks which they have found very useful. All Year 11s have also had one to one mock interviews with the Ministry of Justice to help them with what they may be asked in their interviews for colleges and sixth forms. I have already written quite a number of references and a number of students have had their interviews with their chosen colleges and have secured places for September next year.

Intervention has been working really well and students are very positive about the extra time that is given freely by their subject teachers. Intervention will continue after Christmas as this is a valuable time for them to further embed their knowledge and understanding.

I wish all Year 11 students and their families a very Merry Christmas and a happy holiday, don’t eat too many mince pies, save some for Santa!

Mrs Sue Buckingham, Year 11 Family

English students across the Academy are This term, in Year 8, we have been focusing on reading and writing Gothic Fiction. Students have been using a range of showing outstanding presentation and ambitious vocabulary and techniques from Victorian Gothic extended writing. This will set everyone Fiction in their own writing and understanding why the repressed, pious and orthodox Victorians were so fascinated up for success in the future and by the Gothic. Here is a small selection of the outstanding demonstrates commitment to excellence, writing that students have been doing. rigour, resilience and passion. Here are the books of Josh Dear, Yr 9, Zaara Bartlett, Yr 7, Rhys Williams, Yr 7 and Savannah Dixon, Yr 9. They have all shown a real dedication to producing beautiful, detailed and accurate work. Netball Club Netball has really taken off at the Academy since September. Each week we have around 70 girls turn up to Netball training across two nights. The girls’ skills and understanding of the game has massively improved since the start of the year. This has led them to many victories and some close defeats against opposing schools.

Both the Year 7s and 8s are entered into the Croydon Schools Netball League. The Year 7s have currently played 4 games, winning 1, drawing 1 and 2 narrow defeats. All players in this team have been extremely committed to training and are working hard to improve their team performance. Kriyaa Ramnath- Dhanua, Ciara Commins, Tia Campbell and Isabelle Grundy have all been nominated for player of the match by the opposing team.

The Year 8s have played 3, won 2, and lost 1. This team have already scored 27 goals in just 3 games. Thanks to Imogen Pearce, Zoe Morgan, Samantha Reid, Rebecca Martin and Tillie Johnson. Imogen Pearce, Zoe Morgan and Lottie Hancox have all been selected as player of the match by the opposing team for their level of skills displayed. 1 The Year 9 team have played one friendly against St Mary’s winning a massive 12-0. It was fantastic to see a range of students participating in the game. For many of these students it was the first time they have played a competitive Netball match before. Kiera- Mae Jenkyns was nominated player of the match by the opposing school and Honey-Leigh Smith was nominated by Miss Berkeley.

Well done to all the students involved in Netball club this term and those who have represent the school.

Rugby Oasis Coulsdon has continued its journey with the RFU All Schools programme by embedding rugby into the Academy curriculum this year. Every Thursday over 50 boys and girls have attended training with the PE staff, all now qualified Level 2 Rugby Coaches with the RFU, along with the coaching staff from Old Caterhamians RFC and of course Henry Birch, our All Schools RFU Coach.

Both the boys and girls teams have taken part in many rugby festivals held here and Chipstead RFC too. These festivals have seen over one hundred of our students across years 7-10 being given the opportunity to represent the Academy in rugby and compete against other school from the local area as well as many from areas outside of Croydon.

On the last Tuesday of this term all the students that have attended training or represented the Academy at a rugby fixture were invited down to a special assembly in the dance studio where an invited guest from the world of rugby presented them with a small gift 2 to thank each one of them for their contribution to rugby at the Academy and where we will also hand out team trophies to particular students who have shown an excellence within their year teams.

Badminton

On the 28th of November four Year 10 boys took part in a south Croydon schools Badminton tournament which saw ten schools from the borough take part. Matthew Franks, Calum Page, Kristian Taylor, and Tobey Flynn won their group, winning a total of 9 games out of a possible 12. They then went to the semi-finals, which after a couple of tough matches and some amazing Badminton being played, lost 2-1. Their efforts placed Oasis Academy Coulsdon 3rd overall. If you would like to play Badminton or possible represent the Academy in similar tournaments in the future, feel free to come along to Badminton club after school on Wednesdays and have a go- all 3 you need is trainers! Sevilla Football Tour

During the October half term, 57 of our finest footballers from Years 8-11 embarked on an experience of a life time to Sevilla FC in Spain to be trained by professional Sevilla FC coaches at the first team training complex and play two matches against a local football academy. The coaches went above and beyond to ensure that all of the boys developed as not only footballers but young adults and their work payed off during the matches as they all excelled against top 4 quality Spanish teams. The performances of year 11s Ciaran Moores and Jacob Whyte during matches and training extremely impressed the head coach; they may have a contract coming to them in the post! Playing football wasn’t the only thing on the agenda! The boys watched a live first team match at the impressive Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. The very next day, we were pitch side in a behind the scenes tour of the stadium, venturing into the team’s dug-outs, changing rooms, media room, and trophy hall. The trip was looking to end on a negative as the flight home was delayed by 4 hours. However, fate was on our side and the Sevilla First Team players strolled through Sevilla Airport, giving a perfect opportunity for our boys to meet and take pictures with the players they had been idolising during the trip.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Is your child talking to strangers on their X-box or Instagram account? Do you know exactly who they are talking to? What’s a bot? Is your child getting skins or on-line gifts? Do you know how to put parental controls on devices? And how do you know if your child isn’t getting around them?

In truth, many parents and teachers lag well behind young people in our understanding of modern technology. And, unfortunately, this is why some young people are especially vulnerable to on-line grooming and exploitation.

www.thinkuknow.co.uk is a fantastic resource for all parents and carers concerned about the dangers of the on-line world and how youngsters of all ages can be targeted. There is a section specially designed for parents with up to date information on what your child may well be doing on their phone, tablet, gaming device or laptop.

Please take the time to look at this and help to keep your child safe.
