COOTAMUNDRA WAR MEMORIAL ALBERT PARK – HOVELL STREET COOTAMUNDRA WORLD WAR 1 HONOUR ROLL Compilation by Kevin Casey, Breakfast Point 2012 COOTAMUNDRA WAR MEMORIAL – WORLD WAR 1 A marble obelisk and other memorials have been erected in Albert Park in memory of those citizens of Cootamundra and District who served and died in the defence of Australia during times of conflict. The names of many of those who served in World Wars 1 and 2 are engraved and highlighted in gold on the obelisk. This account has been prepared to provide a background to the men associated with the Cootamundra district who served and died in World War 1. While it is acknowledged that an exhaustive list of local men who served in the war has not been compiled, this account briefly highlights the family and military backgrounds of those who did and who are recorded on the obelisk. Other men not listed on the obelisk but who were associated with the district and who also served and died in the war have been identified in the course of the research. They are also included in this account. No doubt further research will identify more men. Hopefully this account will jog a few memories and inspire further research into the topic. An invitation is extended to interested people to add to the knowledge of those who served Those who served came from a wide range of backgrounds. A number of the men had long family associations with the district and many have family members who are still residents of the district.

Johnson and Malcolm R. Sainty. published by the Library of Australian History, Sydney 2001. The book details a comprehensive history of the cemetery. One of the main sections of the book deals with the Re-interment Register that was compiled by the Department of Public Works of the NSW government in 1901, to record the names of the deceased who were being removed to make way for Sydney’s Central Railway Station. The history of this process, taken from the book, is reproduced below. The book also contains copies of documents relating to this process. • Rookwood Sectional Notes
Rookwood Sectional notes These notes are intended to assist in locating particular graves at Rookwood. The section names and grave numbers are as allocated by the relevant cemetery authority. The row numbers have been ascribed by SAG for the purpose of making clear where rows start and end, and also to assist in locating graves. However, they are not part of the cemetery record. The absence of a section from these notes indicates that the numbering system and location of graves within a section is expected to present the researcher no difficulty. Grave numbers are generally inscribed on the headstone itself, or on the kerb. In some cases they have been obtained from the burial registers maintained by the relevant trustees. The grave numbering systems used by the various cemetery trusts have varied from time to time, and from trust to trust. In some cases the graves in a row are numbered (e.g.) 1, 3, 5, 7 etc with the numbers 2, 4, 6, 8 etc used in the row behind. We refer to this system as "alternate numbering". In other cases the graves are numbered in strict numerical sequence (e.g.) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. We refer to this system as "sequential numbering". If in doubt about the system in use, viewing a Nearby Graves report will generally reveal the pattern of numbering. In some sections, or in particular rows, the situation is confused by the use of both systems, apparently as a result of the section being extended in area at some stage. The notes below alert the user to these situations, but it is impossible in these notes to provide detailed guidance.

It is a place of 4 5 remembrance and peace; however it is also historically and culturally significant. The first burial at Rookwood took place in 1867, after the Sydney colony outgrew its previous cemeteries, located at the site of the current Sydney Town Hall and near Central Station. Rookwood Cemetery now conducts over 5,500 burials and cremations annually and caters for up to ninety different religious and cultural groups. Rookwood General Cemeteries Reserve Trust (RGCRT) was established in 2012, by the Minister for Primary Industries the Honourable Katrina Hodgkinson, to unite the former Anglican, General, Independent, Jewish and Muslim Trusts that managed Rookwood. Today we are custodians of 190 hectares of the cemetery, which equates to two-thirds of this iconic site. The remainder is managed by the Catholic Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (CMCT) and the Rookwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium. Since the amalgamation RGCRT has transformed into a stronger, more unified organisation.

THE HYDROGEOLOGICAL CONTEXT OF CEMETERY OPERATIONS AND PLANNING IN AUSTRALIA by Boyd B. In addition, I certify that all information sources and literature used are indicated in the thesis. Signature of Candidate i Abstract The Hydrogeological Context of Cemetery Operations and Planning In Australia by Boyd B. Dent The purpose of this research has been to evaluate the potential contamination impact of cemeteries on groundwater. A comprehensive study of the groundwaters in the unsaturated and saturated zones of nine Australian cemeteries has been made, with most sampling between October 1996 and August 1998. Periodic sampling from 83 wells or ponds yielded 305 complete samples which were tested for at least 38 inorganic and 5 bacterial analytes. Other, partially complete samples were used for metals and bacterial analyses. The soils of all sites were tested for a range of analytes that might reflect or affect the presence of human decomposition products. The within-cemetery sampling has allowed inorganic chemical characterisation of cemetery groundwaters to an amount of detail not previously attained.

2020 Annual Report 2 3 Contents From the Chair .................................................. 4-5 From the CEO .................................................... 6-7 Our Key Stakeholders .......................................... 8 At a Glance ............................................................. 9 Operating Environment .............................. 10-12 Progress on Strategic Priorities ................. 13-21 The Board .......................................................22-23 Financial Performance ....................................... 24 Annual Accounts .......................................... 26-63 2 3 From the Chair On behalf of the Centennial Park Board, I am pleased to present the 2019/20 Annual Report. I consider it a great privilege to continue to serve as the Chair of the Centennial Park Board for another year. The tail end of this financial year has certainly brought challenges, but we were still able to celebrate many achievements throughout the year. This year Centennial Park recorded a deficit of $451K, significantly better than the budget, and after distributing a liability guarantee fee of $636K to our owner councils. A deficit was budgeted in anticipation of the introduction of new accounting standards that require a significant portion of the income received from Interment Rights to be deferred and brought to account over the entire period of the Interment Right. A commitment to sound financial discipline ensured that Centennial Park delivered a better result than budgeted, despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Centennial Park is an important place for our community and those with loved ones resting here. It is not just a place of mourning. It is a place that connects people through beautiful gardens, services, events and stories. The leadership team at Centennial Park continue their work to future-proof the Park to ensure it meets the needs of our families and the broader community.

  • The Knott Family Were Involved In
THE FAMILY OF GEORGE KNOTT IN AUSTRALASIA FROM 1874 Introduction: The history of the Knott (also spelt Nott, Note and Nuth in English) family dates back many hundreds of years. In the 7 th century a person with the name Cnotta was used in England to describe a thickset person. There are early recorded names in England with a name which resembles the form we know. One was Robert Cnot, a Knight Templer (Crusader) in 1185. The name also has German (spelt Knothe, Knaute, Knode, Knotel, Knodgen ) and Scandinavian origins (spelt Knudsen, Knutsen and Knutsson). By the middle ages it could also be used to describe a person who lived near a hill or projecting rock as the word knott was used to describe a hillock. By 1740, when I found the earliest of our forebears, the name Knott was relatively common across areas of England. Our family came from Kent in the south east of England and were largely agricultural labourers. KENT ENGLAND: 1740: Birth of James Knott. He married a lady called Mary and they had a son they named John in 1761. 1787: On the 20 th May of this year John Knott married Judith Maley in Dartford Kent. 1803: Birth of Richard Knott, the father of George Knott who was to immigrate to South Australia. 1825-27: Somewhere around this time Richard Knott married Mary Overton and they had their first child in 1827. They went on to have 7 children, 6 boys and a girl with our forbear, George Knott born at Wingham Kent around 1831.

Rookwood Necropolis is one of the largest burial grounds in the world and contains the largest 19th century cemetery in Australia; . The scale of design, design features, use of plants, gardenesque layout, high quality and diversity of structures, monuments and details of Rookwood represent a rare surviving example of mid-late 19th century ideals for a major public cemetery. The choices of plants in these sections also demonstrate 19th century funerary etiquette and fashion by way of plant symbolism; . The imagination and expertise of a number of prominent individuals are manifest in the historic fabric and design of Rookwood …This includes its original design and subsequent development over almost 150 years. The Necropolis was designed as a pleasant setting both for the dead and a comforting site for visiting mourners. The landscape was equipped with visitor amenities such as carriageways, paths, plantings, fences, signs, chapels, shelters and drainage.
