Taverns and Inns in the German Countryside: Male Honor and Public Space
TAVERNS AND INNS IN THE GERMAN COUNTRYSIDE: MALE HONOR AND PUBLIC SPACE Marc R. Forster By the late seventeenth century there was at least one tavern in every village in southwest Germany. Taverns and inns of course performed many functions in the countryside. They were centers of sociability, communications nodes, meeting places for business, and stages for local politics, social con icts, and even rebellion. Not surprisingly, the local courts of the smaller principalities, like the Hochstift Speyer and monasteries of Salem and Rot an der Rot, handled a steady ow of court cases involving disputes in and around taverns. Several aspects of these cases stand out. Most obviously, law cases remind us how village taverns, like their counterparts in cities, were theaters where notions of male honor were played out. More indirectly, however, the archives show that taverns tied villages to the outside world, but were even more important for local communications. The place of taverns in local life is the focus of this paper. I will begin with the story of two men and a tavern . Hans Schön and Hans Pfalzer In the 1650s, Hans Schön was the tavern keeper, the Taffern Wirt, in the village of Berkheim. Berkheim lies between Biberach and Memmingen in the valley of the Iller, right on the major road that ran between Kempten to the south and Ulm to the north. The village was partly under the jurisdiction of the Premonstratensian Abbey of Rot an der Rot, and partly under that of the Benedictine monks at Ochsenhau- sen. Schön leased his inn from the monks at Rot, to whom he paid an annual fee and taxes on each measure of wine and beer sold. -

THE STATE PALACES AND GARDENS OF BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG STAATLICHE SCHLÖSSER UND GÄRTEN BADEN-WÜRTTEMBERG PRESS RELEASE JANUARY 2019 / 2 PAGES WIBLINGEN MONASTERY Wiblingen Monastery Library and monastery museum Situated directly in front of the gates of the old Imperial City of Wiblingen, stands a Benedictine monastery, founded in 1093. This baroque complex is spacious; elongated buildings enclose the heart of the monastery – the magnificent church. This is the last heyday of baroque church architecture in Upper Swabia. The Wiblingen Library Hall is a must for any visitor: lavishly decorated with stucco and paintings – it is the highlight of each visit. HISTORY OF MANY CENTURIES The monastery itself is far older: as far back as the 11th century, the first monks came to Wiblingen from the St. Blasien Benedictine monastery in the Black Forest. It is not known how the first monastery complex looked. By 1700, the monastery had become so prosperous that the monks were keen on demonstrating their power and wealth with a splendid new baroque structure. And as everywhere else, the new structure was intended to show that the abbot was not only a spiritual but also a secular ruler. The monastery complex – planned on an enormously large scale – could never be finished as long as the monastery still existed. It was, in fact, only completed at the beginning of the 20th century – now as a Württemberg barracks. HIGHLIGHT OF THE UPPER SWABIAN BAROQUE ROUTE The majestic structure of the former Wiblingen Benedictine monastery is today a highlight along the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. Especially the Library Hall in its sweeping rococo forms is a prime attraction for visitors. -

89E ULLMANN Bernhard
The Jewish Community of Laupheim and its Annihilation Book Pages 532 - 536 ULLMANN, Bernhard, Cattle Merchant, 2 Radstrasse Translated by Ernie Hunter DR. ANTJE KÖHLERSCHMIDT Bernhard, known as Benno, Ullmann, born 19.1.1878 in Haigerloch, emigrated 2.4.1941 to New York, USA, OO Sarah, maiden name Bernheim , born 19.2.1886 in Laupheim, emigrated 2.4.1941 to New York, USA, - Sofie Ullmann , born 30.6.1911 in Haigerloch, emigrated 28.10.1937 to the USA. 1 The family name of Ullmann is quite possibly a name originating from the birth town of Ulm, where the earliest recorded settlement of Jews was in 1291. After their expulsion in 1499 a new Jewish community was established in 1845/’46, which, as in Laupheim, was destroyed during the NAZI time. However the Jewish couple Siegmund and Resi Wegliein, nèe Regensteiner, who survived KZ Theresienstadt, did return to their home town. Over sixty years later a new Jewish community centre was established. The centre, opened in Ulm on 5 May 2002, was established by Israelis living in Ulm - adding to the cultural diversity of the town. Jewish School 1895: in the middle: Bernhard (Benno) Ullmann Sarah Bernheim, left: Else (Kreisarchiv Biberach) Dworzan . Bernhard – known as Benno – Ullmann was born in Haigerloch on 19 January 1878 and grew up there. In pursuit of his profession of cattle merchant he probably went as far as Upper Swabia, where he met his future wife, Sarah Bernheim, and was allowed to become further acquainted with her. She was the daughter of cattle merchant Jacob Leopold Bernheim (1856 – 1921) and Bertha Bernheim, nèe Nördlinger (1862 – 1913), and was born 19 February 1886 in Laupheim.
