Death defying morphologies: mass extinction and disparity in the order Harpetida James Beech and James Lamsdell West Virginia University, Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, Geology, United States ([email protected]) This study seeks to better understand the phylogenetic relationships within the trilobite order Harpetida, with a view towards using this group to explore the relationship between extinction intensity and disparity. The harpetid response to the Late Ordovician mass extinction is of particular interest. A discrete morphological character matrix was created from the formal descriptions of harpetids in the published trilobite literature, and refined using first-hand observations of harpetid fossils. The final matrix consists of 76 discrete characters, including 69 cephalic characters, three thoracic characters, and four pygidial characters. This matrix is the first attempt of its kind to characterize the morphology of Harpetida as a whole, rather than focusing on individual harpetid genera. Exemplar species from a broad selection of harpetid genera, along with ptychopariid and redlichiid out groups, are included in the matrix, coded according to published figures and direct observation of specimens held in the collections of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. The matrix was used to generate a hypothetical tree of harpetid phylogenetic relationships, the topology of which indicates support for harpetid monophyly but throws doubt onto the previous hypotheses of the internal relationships of the group. Disparity analysis of the group reveals a significant decline in morphological diversity across the Late Or- dovician mass extinction boundary, with slow recovery beginning in the Silurian and continuing into the Devonian..

New material of Radiaspis radiata (Goldfuss, 1843) and the first koneprusiine in Britain, Koneprusia? sp., are described from the famous Lummaton shell-bed, Torquay, Devon. New taxa of Koneprusia, K. serrensis, K. aboussalamae, K. brevispina,andK. sp. A and K. sp. B are defined. Ceratocephala (Leonaspis) harborti Richter & Richter, 1926, is revised and reassigned to Gondwanaspis Feist, 2002. Two new species of Gondwanaspis, G. dracula and G. spinosa, plus three others left in open nomenclature, are described from the late Frasnian of Western Australia. A further species of Gondwanaspis, G. prisca, is described from the early Frasnian of Montagne Noire. Species of Gondwanaspis are shown to possess a number of paedomorphic features. A functional analysis suggests that, unlike other odontopleurids, Gondwanaspis actively fed and rested with the same cephalic orientation. The sole odontopleurid survivors of the severe terminal mid-Givetian biocrisis (‘Taghanic Event’) belong to the koneprusiine Koneprusia in the late Givetian and Frasnian, and, of cryptogenic origin, the acidaspidine Gondwanaspis in the Frasnian.

A total of 15 families; 36 genera and 53 species are documented herein, including a new genus and seventeen new species; fourteen of which remain under open nomenclature. Most of the trilobites in the British late Silurian are restricted to the shelf, and predominantly occur in the Elton, Bringewood, Leintwardine, and Whitcliffe groups of Wales and the Welsh Borderland. The Elton to Whitcliffe groups represent a shallowing upwards sequence overall; each is characterised by a distinct lithofacies and fauna. The trilobites and brachiopods of the Coldwell Formation of the Lake District Basin are documented, and are comparable with faunas in the Swedish Colonus Shale and the Mottled Mudstones of North Wales. Ludlow trilobite associations, containing commonly co-occurring trilobite taxa, are defined for each palaeoenvironment.

Emended diagnoses are provided for all the genera within the family. The three subfamilies Dolichoharpinae, Eoharpetinae and Harpetinae are supressed within the Harpetidae. The genera AlIstraloharpes and Sinoharpes are placed in synonymy with DlIbhglasina. Thorslundops and Wegeiinia are placed in synonymy with Hibbertia, and the subgenus FritclJaspis placed in synonymy with LiolJarpes. Reticuloharpes and HelioJwrpes are placed in synonymy with Harpes. The Harpetidae, along with the Entomaspididae and Harpididae, is considered to belong in the Harpetida, which is herein raised to ordinal rank within the subclass Libristoma. Drage ABSTRACT Moulting of a protective exoskeleton is a defining characteristic of Euarthropoda, and its evolution can be explored through analysing moults preserved in the fossil record. Our most complete record comes from the Trilobita, which were uniquely flexi- ble in moulting compared to other arthropod groups. This study presents the first broad-scale quantitative analysis of trilobite moulting. Trends in moulting variability with taxonomy and through the Palaeozoic are explored by looking at the occurrences of six moulting characteristics: opening of the facial and ventral sutures; and disarticulation of the cephalon, cranidium, thorax, and pygidium. Significant differences in moulting across taxonomic and temporal groups were identified using chi-squared analyses, and biases with sampling and diversity identified through correlation analyses. Occur- rences of facial and ventral suture opening, and cephalic disarticulation, significantly varied between orders and Epochs. These likely result from the prevalence of ventral suture moulting in Redlichiida and cephalic disarticulation in Phacopida, and their rele- vant diversity patterns. The data show high levels of intraspecific variability in moulting; ~40% of species showed multiple moulting characteristics. Redlichiida and the early Cambrian are the most intraspecifically variable, with greater variability likely an adap- tation to the initial radiation and establishment of trilobites into new niches. The lon- gest-lived group, Proetida, showed the lowest levels of intraspecific variability, which may suggest greater specialism later in the Palaeozoic. Ultimately, datasets such as this advocate the need to study behaviours in the fossil record on a broad-scale, because they help us build a comprehensive picture of extinct groups as living animals.
