This is because mafic minor volcanic centres and related flows that formed during a single eruption are relatively rare and occur in locally clusters (e.g. Andagua/Humbo fields in S. Peru, Delacour et al., 2007; Negrillar field in N. Chile, Deruelle 1982) or in the back arc region (Davidson and de Silva, 1992). These studies showed that the "monogenetic" lavas are high-K calc-alkaline and their major, trace, and rare elements, as well as Sr-, Nd- and Pb- isotopes data display a range comparable to those of the Central Volcanic Zone composite volcanoes (Delacour et al., 2007). It has been argued that the eruptive products of these minor centers bypass the large magma chamber systems below Andean stratovolcanoes and thus may represent magmas that were derived from a deeper level in the crust (Davidson and de Silva, 1992; Ruprecht and Wörner, 2007). This study represents a continuation of our work to understand the regional variation in erupted magma composition in the Central Andes (Mamani et al., 2008; Wörner et al., 1992). -

Madrid [email protected] RESUMEN A raíz de los recientes descubrimientos de ofrendas de niños y niñas de escasa edad en las altas cumbres nevadas del Perú, Chile y Argentina, decidí profundizar las investigaciones acerca de las motivaciones, patrones de comportamiento y las prácticas rituales que acompañaron a esta forma de sacrificios humanos a las deidades andinas. Basamos nuestros estudios en la versión de una serie de arqueólogos y cronistas, especialmente Betanzos, quien narra con lujo de detalles, cómo estos niños eran «enterrados vivos por todos los lugares, donde había estado el inca, mil niños y mil niñas de cuatro y cinco años». Se describe a «la niña de Tanta Cachua», hacemos un detenido análisis de «la momia de Ampato: ‘Juanita’», «Las momias de Salta», la mujeres y niños acompañantes en la muerte, y por último, se señala la supervivencia del ancestral culto a los Apus. ABSTRACT Following recent discoveries of offerings from small children age into snow-covered mountains of Peru, Chile and Argentina, decided to intensify the research on the motivations, behavioral patterns and ritual practices that accompanied this form human sacrifices to Andean deities. We base our studies on the release of a number of archaeologists and writers, especially Betan- zos, who narrates in detail how these children were «buried alive by all the places where the Inca had a thousand children and four thousand girls and five years. -

We summarize the results, currently in press, of Bayesian models from eight Late Formative centers in the southern Lake Titicaca basin. We extend this chronology with two new Bayesian models of Middle Formative ceramics from Chiripa in the south and four sites with Pukara ceramics in the north. The similar incised styles and closely aligned chronologies lead us to explore the possibility that decorating practices or even potting communities may have alternated between the north and south during the Formative. FLORES , University of California, Davis Goods to everyone: Obsidian during the Formative Period of the Titicaca basin Previous research in the Lake Titicaca basin proposed that emergent social prestige and status in the Formative Period is indicated by differential access to obsidian by elite and non-elite members of the population. The model anticipates high proportions of obsidian in large ceremonial centers relative to residential centers. This study examines the distribution of obsidian among Middle and Late Formative period (1300 BC - 500 AD) settlements in the Ramis valley in the northern Lake Titicaca basin. The analysis reveals not only an abundance of obsidian projectile points in both site types, but also fails to find any relationship between site type and obsidian prevalance. -

This study will focus on frozen mummies of sacrificial victims from mounts Llullaillaco (6739 m), Quehuar (6130 m), ElToro (6160 m), and the Aconcagua massif. These finds provide bioarchaeological data from mountaintop sites that has been recovered in scientifically controlled excavations in the northwest of Argentina, which was once part of the southern province of the Inca Empire. Numerous interdisciplinary studies have been conducted on the Llullaillaco mummies, including radiological evaluations by conventional X-rays and CT scans, which provided information about condition and pathology of the bones and internal organ, as well as dental studies oriented to the estimation of the ages of the three children at the time of death. Ancient DNA studies and hair analysis were also performed in cooperation with the George Mason University, the University of Bradford, and the Laboratory of Biological Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen. Ethnohistorical sources reveal interesting aspects related to the commemorative, expiatory, propitiatory, and dedicatory aspects of human sacrifice performed under Inca rule. -
Climbing Pichu Pichu
Climbing Pichu Pichu Day 1: Arequipa - Laguna de Salinas We leave Arequipa at 8am in a private vehicle. We drive 3 hours to the Laguna de Salinas perched at 4300m high. This lagoon is a natural habitat for a very special wildlife: flamingos. We will also see llamas, alpacas and vicunas. During a good part of the year, the lagoon is actually a salar. The scenery is so spectacular, it's like in Bolivia, especially as the lagoon is surrounded by the majestic Misti volcano (5825m), Pichu Pichu (5664) and also Ubinas volcano (5672m) which is the most active one in Peru. Eruptions guaranteed! But no worries, that's safe for us ... We camp at 4400m near aguas calientes (hot springs) and will enjoy a great sunset! Day 2: Pichu Pichu - Arequipa Today, we'll wake up early and head to the "Pichu Pichu Basecamp" located at about 4700m. Today is Ascension Day! We'll have 900m of ascent, about 5-6 hours round trip. You will be rewarded for your efforts once arrived at the top. The stunning view of Arequipa and volcanoes Misti and Chachani, but also over the lagoon (salar) and Ubinas volcano. The descent is great, you can jump and slide on the steep hills of Pichu Pichu! We will finally get some time to rest on our way back to Arequipa in 4x4. Approximate arrival time: 5pm. This adventure is for you! The intricate and delicate interconnectedness of the mummies, the modern cultural practices that descend from their original cultures, and the effect of climate change on the status of high altitude ice bring broad-scale lessons to those interested in the environmental and cultural landscapes of sustainability. Constanza Ceruti is an Argentinean anthropologist, who has become the only female specialist in the field of high altitude archaeology, studying Inca ceremonial centers on the summits of Andean mountains. She is Scientific Investigator of the National Council for the Scientific Research (CONICET) in Argentina and a Professor of Inca Archaeology at Catholic University of Salta. Dr. Ceruti has climbed over 100 mountains above 16,500 feet, within the context of systematic archaeological research, which has resulted in more than fifty publications, including six books. She has been twice on top of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America, and on the summit of Pissis, the highest volcano in the world, as well as on several other peaks in Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, Chile and Argentina.
