Department of Tribal Studies Kannada University, Hampi Department Department of Tribal Studies Kannada University, Hampi Vidyaranya-583276 Department Profile (2012-13 to 2018-19) 1. Introduction The University established the Department of Tribal Studies on 01.7.1994 with a view to undertake a comprehensive study of tribal lore and tribal people of Karnataka. Karnataka has three distinct geographical regions: Karavali (coastal), Malenadu (hill region) and Bayaluseeme (plateau). In Karavali and Malenadu we find a large number of tribes and in Bayaluseeme we find a few tribes. Nomadic tribes are also found in Karnataka. The official records mention that in Karnataka we have 50 tribes. But today some of the tribes mentioned in the records are not found anywhere. At the same time we have certain tribes, which are not at all mentioned in the Scheduled Tribes list prepared by the Government of India. The Government has prepared the Scheduled Tribe list based on the studies conducted during the colonial period. This area of studies has been, hence, neglected so far. In this context, the establishment of the Department of Tribal Studies in Kannada University assumes importance. The Department of Tribal Studies has come into being to shoulder many important responsibilities. One of the primary responsibilities has been to conduct a comprehensive survey of the Tribes. In this context we need to undertake micro study of each community from the economic, social and cultural perspectives in a scientific manner. The following are some of the major projects taken up by the Department, so far: 1) Giriseeme-the Tribal village: the buildings are modeled on various tribal hamlets of Karnataka which houses the Department of Tribal Studies. 2) Tribal Museum: To narrate and document the changing life of tribals. 3) Audio-video documentation: the department has a collection of 242 hours of audio and 80 hours of video documentation containing the Oral epics of various tribes, their rituals, their customs, dance, other art forms and their life styles. 4) Tribal Epic Series: Documenting the 13 Tribal epics and publication of 11epics so far. 5) Tribal Studies Series: Four books have been published in this series. 6) Budakattu Adhyayana journal: published since 2003 half yearly. 7) Pictorial Encyclopedia of Tribes of Karnataka 8) Seminar, workshop series: Forest Blossoms and the Concrete Jungle : An Insight into Indian Tribal Studies, Published in 2011 9) Classical language Series: Maragu Bhase (Nomadic tribes Code Dialect) book published in 2012 10) Dictionaries Series: गⴂडवाना गⴂडी श녍दकोश (Gondwana Gondi Dictionary) published in 2017 2. • Shimoga -> Jog -> Talaguppa -> Honnemaradu
Below was our plan Saturday(9/10/11) Shimoga -> Jog -> Talaguppa -> Honnemaradu -> Talaguppa -> Gokarana (Stay at Gokarana) Sunday(9/11/11) Gokarana -> Srisi -> Yana -> Sirsi -> Udupi(stay at Udupi) Monday(9/12/11) Udupi -> Someshwara(water sports) -> Agumbe -> Sakrebailu -> Mandagagge(Bird sanctuary) -> Gajanur(Tunga Dam) -> Shimoga(head back to Bangalore) We(I and Wife(Veena) started from our respective offices at 2.30 PM on friday. Veena took her office bus to station directly whereas I took a BMTC volvo. We met at station around 3.30 PM. Platform #9 and found the train and our seats. After making my big backpack cozy on the luggage rack, we headed out to the platform to have some snacks(lays :)) and hot tea(Veena was having head ache:(). Train left Bangalore at 4.30 PM. The train coaches were newly installed with TV sets, but the volume on the speaker was too low or was the gang of people around us increasing the decibel level?. Either way, the tv was playing local Kannada songs and we were least interested(Venki would have enjoyed am sure ;-)). The journey was a long 5.30 hours and we could keep up our energy only because of the excitement about the whole trip thing. Reached Shimoga at 10 pm, took an auto to Durga lodge. Thanks to Shreyas(my friend and colleague), he had booked a room for us. Had dinner(chapati oota) at a mess next to Durga lodge. The room was pretty big and Veena was stunned at the rent(400 Rs per day, someone find me a hut in Bangalore please!).
