S T C A L N R N SA INGLEY VIEW FROM S T C A L N R N A THE CHAIR IN Y S SATURDAY 13TH JULY 2019 GLE Welcome to the players, officials and supporters from Skirlaugh for this afternoon’s NCL Division 1 game. Skirlaugh are currently in 5th place in the table with 16 points with Stanningley in 7th place with 14 points. A win today will take us above them on points difference. When we played at their place in April, Skirlaugh took the points with a 27 – 18 victory so today we can hopefully avenge that defeat today. Last weekend Skirlaugh were beaten at home by Dewsbury Moor but there is no disgrace in that as the Moor have made a remarkable recovery from their early season form. Last week we travelled to Normanton for a tremendous 46 – 6 victory, it is not very often teams travel to “The Graveyard” and come away with such a win so congratulations to all the players and coaches for that effort. Well done to our U12 and U15 players and coaches who both won their age groups Yorkshire Cup last weekend. The U12’s defeated Hunslet Club Parkside 28 – 0 and the U15’s coming away with a 38 – 6 win. 130 YEAR CELEBRATION DAY Big day next Saturday (20th July) when we hold our 130 year celebration day. Plenty of events going on both before and after our NCL game against local rivals Milford. There will be stalls, tombola (run once again by John Popplewell), food, beer and the U11 team are playing against Milford as well. It is also a day when we welcome players from the past in a reunion, if you know any “old boys” please pass the message on. After all the day time activities top local band “Cook ‘n Stew” will be taking the stage at 6.30pm. THE STANNINGLEY STORY 1889 – 2019 The original Stanningley Story 1889 to 1989 by Ron Hudson has been updated and additional information added by renowned local author Jon Norfolk. The books are on sale now for £9. If anybody wants to buy a ticket for today’s raffle, please see John Popplewell. Enjoy the game. The Over 35s version of our sport is growing apace, to such a degree in fact that I’m struggling, for space reasons, to get all the stories into League Express that come my way regarding teams sprouting up here and there. Masters Rugby League, which has now been operating in this country for a decade and more, seems to be becoming increasingly popular, and not only in the north of England. Medway, of course, have run a side for quite a few years, while a team has been launched recently in Southampton. Masters Rugby League kick-started a few weeks ago in Cardiff, and I’ve no doubt that there will be many more clubs making similar announcements in the coming months. What seems to attract players as much as anything is the `social’ aspect, with no official score ever recorded (although I’m sure that everyone knows, after a game, which team has scored most tries!) while the unofficial regulations decree that each player buys his opposite number a pint, which is a nice idea. Time and time again stories I receive suggest that ex-players’ lives are enhanced by their involvement in Masters Rugby League. I think it’s a fact that what most players, in any sport, miss more than anything when they hang up their boots isn’t so much the game itself as the general `crack’. Go to any reunion and the conversation isn’t so much about trophies won or lost but about what a team-mate got up to on that end-of-season night out, what another used to do to avoid training, and how someone else was a great dressing room `character’. I used to enjoy the `Time of our Lives’ series on TV, which focused on soccer and in which Jeff Stelling chatted to three former-teammates from various clubs. A classic was Larry Loyd’s tale of how the ace Scottish winger John Robertson would drift into training at Nottingham Forest with a carrier bag, having done his shopping on the way. That brings to mind Roger Millward’s story, from a Great Britain tour of Australia, about how his room-mate Peter `Flash’ Flanagan had only taken one pair of underpants on the trip, which he’d wash every night and then hang on a lamp to dry out. I may be overstating the case here, as I don’t want to suggest that players inevitably become depressed when they retire – although that’s certainly been the case in one or two high-profile cases – but it’s a fact that most miss the game, or more accurately the banter, a great deal. Someone said to me recently, about his own club’s reunion, that it was probably the first time some of the men there had had a smile on their faces for a while. And that’s what Masters Rugby League, as well as reunions, is surely about. The Yorkshire Festival is taking place to tomorrow at Eastmoor. Get along if you can and, if you’re over 35, take a pair of boots – you might get a run-out.
