Further reproduction prohibited without permission. ABSTRACT USING HISTORIC RURAL CHURCH CEMETERIES AS A MATERIAL CULTURE RESOURCE IN HERITAGE EDUCATION Richard D. Betterly This dissertation provides the university history instructor with a student-centered instructional model utilizing the historic rural church cemetery as a material culture artifact. However, the model is applicable to other academic disciplines at both the collegiate and secondary education levels. The heritage education plan involves a two- part cemetery survey methodology. First, a reconnaissance survey locates cemeteries and collects data within a specified geographic region. Second, a comprehensive survey documents a cemetery's grave markers and other significant features. To evaluate the survey methodology and to illustrate various approaches for using the results of surveys, St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery in Maury County, Tennessee, serves as a case study. The history of the cemetery and significant people buried there illustrates how teachers can incorporate historical context into the results of a cemetery survey. The St. John's comprehensive survey also provides information on changing patterns of Victorian funerary art and architecture in Middle Tennessee. Betterly between grave markers and the cultural transformations in nineteenth century Victorian America provides a basis for understanding how funerary art and architecture serves as a teaching tool. A reconnaissance survey of similar rural graveyards located within a fifty-mile radius of St. John's Cemetery offers a regional context and comparison of Middle Tennessee's transitional gravestone style. The dissertation is more than an analysis of how a rural church cemetery serves as a resource for heritage education. The processes to evaluate the physical conditions of such sites and to remedy problems associated with this type of material culture artifact also are detailed. The study reviews the literature dealing with preservation techniques and the legal protection afforded burial sites. By synthesizing the existing studies on cemetery preservation and by refining previous cemetery survey methods, the dissertation serves the nonacademic needs and concerns of public historians involved with preserving historic burial grounds. The dissertation's primary emphasis, however, is to encourage university instructors to adapt and apply its cemetery survey methodology and case study to other cemetery sites. From 1838 to 1893, the Church in the old Indian Territory was committed to the ecclesiastical jurisdiction, first of the Missionary Bishop of the Southwest, and later of the Bishop of Arkansas. The General Convention of the Church which convened at Philadelphia on August 19, 1835, created the Missionary District of the Southwest, which embraced the States of Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and the Republic of Texas. The Indian Territory, embracing what is today the State of Oklahoma, save the panhandle, and which had been created by a recent Act of Congress, was also included within this district. The Rev. Leonidas Polk,1 the young rector of St. Peter's Church at Columbia, Tennessee, was consecrated the first Missionary Bishop of the newly created district, on December 9, 1838, at Cincinnati, and served as such until October 16, 1841, when he became the initial Bishop of the Diocese of Louisiana.

The contract copied in the appendix of this booklet between the 1850 • 1950 builder and the first vestry was dated December 11, 1849, but this was an "Article to finish Episcopal Church." No reference is made therein to indicate when the building had been started nor how much it lacked being completed at that time. We are certain that the work was completed during the first half.

    THE RIGHT REVEREND STEPHEN ELLIOTT: POLITICAL INFLUENCE AND THE PROTESTANT EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1841-1866 by PAULETTE THOMPSON (Under the Direction of Anastatia Sims) ABSTRACT By the 1840s, the South’s religious and political convictions upheld slaveholders’ social and economic views. These convictions permeated worship services in Georgia via the ministries. At the onset of the Civil War, spirituality provided an essential source of Southern strength in both victory and defeat. As fortitude subsided, religion also played a prodigious role in perpetuating the Confederate experience. For a generation, its theology had endorsed the South’s social arrangement, asserted the morality of slavery, expunged Southern sins, and recruited the populace as God’s devout guardians of the institution. Sustained by the belief that they were God’s chosen people, Southerners rallied to the Confederate cause. Asserting great influence as the presiding Episcopal Bishop of the Confederacy, the Right Reverend Steven Elliott, Jr., aggressively participated in contriving a religious culture that discerned threats to Southern society as challenges to Christian civilization.     THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN NORTH CAROLINA 1587-2015 Historical Overview The Rev. Dr. N. Brooks Graebner Historiographer, Diocese of North Carolina The story of the Episcopal Church in North Carolina can be traced back to the very first English efforts at colonization during the reign of Elizabeth I. In August 1587, at what is now called “the Lost Colony” on Roanoke Island, the Native American Manteo and the English infant Virginia Dare were baptized. Permanent English settlement did not occur until the mid-17th century, however, and it wasn’t until 1701 that the colonial assembly passed its first Vestry Act, thereby making the Church of England the officially sanctioned faith in North Carolina. This act provided for the creation of precincts – or parishes – administered by local vestries, and the precincts of Chowan, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and Currituck along Albemarle Sound and Pamlico precinct in Bath County date to this time. Principally through levying taxes and fines, colonial vestries in each parish were called upon to make provision for church buildings and ministers, oversee the parish poor, and serve other delegated political functions.1 Thus, the Church of England enjoyed a privileged status and legal advantages not enjoyed by other religious groups in 18th century North Carolina. But these legal provisions by no means guaranteed a strong and vibrant Church, and the history of Colonial Anglicanism in North Carolina is largely a study in frustration. From the outset, many inhabitants were at best indifferent—and often opposed—to the establishment of the Church of England. T., Mrs. Title: Stephen Elliott scrapbook Dates: 1842-1867 Extent: 0.08 cubic feet (1 volume) Identification: MS 1575 Biographical/Historical Note No biographical information is available on Mrs. H.T. Hutton, the creator of the scrapbook. Stephen Elliott (1806-1867) was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. He studied law in Charleston, South Carolina and was admitted to the bar there in 1827. He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1835 and priest in 1836. In 1840, he was elected first bishop of the Diocese of Georgia and was consecrated at Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia in 1841. Elliott was instrumental in organizing and establishing Episcopal churches all over Georgia. He was also interested in education, and in 1841, he started the Georgia Episcopal Institute at Montpelier, Georgia near Forsyth. In 1857, Elliott, along with Bishops James Hervey Otey of Tennessee and Leonidas Polk of Louisiana, founded the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Elliott also served as president of Georgia Historical Society until his death. Elliott died at his home in Savannah in 1866 at the age of sixty-one. Scope and Content Note This collection consists of the Stephen Elliott scrapbook, which is a collection of newspaper clippings, obituaries, eulogies, memorial sermons, and publications related to or written by Elliott. The volume was prepared by Mrs. H.T. (Munroe) Hutton for her father, N.C. Munroe. Four of the speeches are by others in tribute to Elliott after his death. The rest of the volume contains 19 published sermons and speeches by Elliott himself and cover the years from 1842-1866.

It is not a time for O groveling; rather, it is a time for reality, for genuine humility, for repentance and forgiveness and renewed commitment to following the ways of Jesus. Lent is a season of preparation, and we are already looking forward to Jesus‟ passion and death for us and then to Easter. One of the oldest names for Lent is “the forty days,” meaning the days from Ash Wednesday to Easter less the Sundays that can be observed as anticipations of Easter, days of rest from fasting or other disciplines in order to strengthen ourselves. “Forty” is a kind of generic number in scripture and calls quickly to mind significant biblical stories: the forty days of Noah‟s flood (Genesis 7:12); Moses‟ forty days on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:18 and elsewhere); and the forty days that Nineveh was given to repent (Jonah 3:4). We particularly think of the forty years that Israel was in the wilderness, tempted by Satan (Mark 1:13).
