Biographical/Historical Note

No biographical information is available on Mrs. H.T. Hutton, the creator of the scrapbook.

Stephen Elliott (1806-1867) was born in Beaufort, South Carolina. He studied law in Charleston, South Carolina and was admitted to the bar there in 1827. He was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1835 and priest in 1836. In 1840, he was elected first bishop of the Diocese of Georgia and was consecrated at Christ Church in Savannah, Georgia in 1841. Elliott was instrumental in organizing and establishing Episcopal churches all over Georgia. He was also interested in education, and in 1841, he started the Georgia Episcopal Institute at Montpelier, Georgia near Forsyth. In 1857, Elliott, along with Bishops of Tennessee and of Louisiana, founded the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Elliott also served as president of Georgia Historical Society until his death. Elliott died at his home in Savannah in 1866 at the age of sixty-one.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the Stephen Elliott scrapbook, which is a collection of newspaper clippings, obituaries, eulogies, memorial sermons, and publications related to or written by Elliott. The volume was prepared by Mrs. H.T. (Munroe) Hutton for her father, N.C. Munroe. Four of the speeches are by others in tribute to Elliott after his death. The rest of the volume contains 19 published sermons and speeches by Elliott himself and cover the years from 1842-1866. Elliott's obituaries and a couple of photographs of him are pasted in the volume.
