Mazza, Ph.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2009 This dissertation examines the citational use of the Judeo-Christian Bible in two sociopolitical debates within the United States: first, the debate over the abolition of slavery in the nineteenth century, and second, the contemporary debate over gay rights. This study incorporates two core theses. First, I argue that the contemporary religious right, in its anti-gay use of the Bible, is replicating the hermeneutical practices used by opponents of the abolitionist movement. My second thesis parallels the first: I argue that the contemporary activists who reclaim the Bible as a pro-gay instrument are standing in the same hermeneutical tradition as nineteenth-century Christian abolitionists. -

Slavery in the Bible and Slavery Today Mako A. Nagasawa Last modified: June 10, 2021 Introduction: Modern Day Slavery Slavery: Something we thought was in our long distant past is now a bigger issue today than it has ever been before. I hear about increasing levels of sex slavery and organized prostitution in Boston. In my neighborhood, Dorchester, women are driven around by pimps, customers come to the car, the woman cannot even leave the car so that the pimp can make a quick getaway if needs be. Some of these women are forced into prostitution; they may come through Rhode Island, because until 2009, RI had a law that made prostitution legal indoors, though not outdoors. That created a loophole where women and children were smuggled into Rhode Island in secret brothels and dispersed all across New England and the nation. Perhaps a bit of that continues. The U.S. State Department estimates that of this number, approximately 17,500 are trafficked into the U.S. each year . UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million people are trafficked every year across international borders throughout the world. So whether we are talking about child sex slaves in Cambodia or bonded labor in Pakistan or war captives in Mauritania or forced prostitution in our own backyard, the issue of slavery is huge. How can we engage the issue of modern day slavery? I think that depends on what tradition you stand in. As a Christian, I have donated money to International Justice Mission, which rescues women and children from sex slavery, and to Love146, which provides aftercare to women and children who were sex slaves. -

The Book: STORIES OF EARLY SETTLERS IN THE WILDERNESS BY JOSIAH PRIEST 1788 - 1851 It is a pleasure to present to you a wonderful story about a family coming to Delaware County many years ago. It embraces the history of the times and the many hardships that these brave settlers had to endure after the turn of the American Revolution. What makes this story so special to me is it's about my fourth great grandfather's family, Timothy Beach, a retired seaman captain who turned to farming in Connecticut before the Revolution broke out. The next course of events would forever mold my heritage by the tragedy to Timothy some years later. This book sheds light to some of these happenings. What is also special is that the author was the grandson to Timothy and much of the information supplied in his writings was by his mother, Deborah Beach Priest, Timothy's eldest child. Deborah, being the eldest child of the family, would have been a very reliable observer of the family's events following the Revolution, making her contributions to the contents of Josiah Priest's book very credible. Josiah was born the year after Timothy's sudden death and I am sure additional sources to his book came from his grandmother and Deborah's sibling, many of whom lived in Franklin, New York. This Beach family story is in several parts. One illustrates the early scouting for their new farmland by Timothy and his eldest son, Richard who was about 10 years old at the time. They set out in the Spring of 1784 and headed to an area near Catskill, New York. -

THOMAS FIELDING SCOTT: FAILURE OR FOUNDATION? by Lawrence N. Crumb The Episcopal Church’s first bishop in the Pacific Northwest was Thomas Fielding Scott. He served for only thirteen years (1854-1867) and left thinking he had been a failure. But was he? Scott was born 12 March 1807 in Iredell County, North Carolina, the younger of two brothers. He became an active member of the Presbyterian Church at age seventeen and went on to Franklin College, as the University of Georgia was then known. He graduated in 1829 and was licensed to preach in the Presbyterian Church. He served several churches in Georgia and Tennessee until 1842, when he met Bishops James Hervey Otey of Tennessee and Leonidas Polk, Missionary Bishop of the Southwest (later, of Louisiana). They were both converts to the Episcopal Church, and under their influence he came to decide that the claims of episcopacy were true. (He had been unhappy with the Presbyterian Church because of a split in 1837-38.) He was ordained deacon in 1843 and priest in 1844 by Bishop Stephen Elliott of Georgia, serving churches in Marietta and Columbus. He later described himself as “conservative and catholic,” possibly the influence of Bishop Otey, whose “high and dry” churchmanship was widespread in the early Nineteenth Century. The General Convention of 1853 established the Missionary jurisdiction of the Oregon and Washington Territories, and Scott was elected as its first bishop. Unlike William Ingraham Kip, who was elected at the same time for California and consecrated at the convention with several bishops taking part, Scott was consecrated at Christ Church, Savannah, on 8 January 1854, with only three bishops (Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina) participating. -
Religion and the Abolition of Slavery: a Comparative Approach
Religions and the abolition of slavery - a comparative approach William G. Clarence-Smith Economic historians tend to see religion as justifying servitude, or perhaps as ameliorating the conditions of slaves and serving to make abolition acceptable, but rarely as a causative factor in the evolution of the ‘peculiar institution.’ In the hallowed traditions, slavery emerges from scarcity of labour and abundance of land. This may be a mistake. If culture is to humans what water is to fish, the relationship between slavery and religion might be stood on its head. It takes a culture that sees certain human beings as chattels, or livestock, for labour to be structured in particular ways. If religions profoundly affected labour opportunities in societies, it becomes all the more important to understand how perceptions of slavery differed and changed. It is customary to draw a distinction between Christian sensitivity to slavery, and the ingrained conservatism of other faiths, but all world religions have wrestled with the problem of slavery. Moreover, all have hesitated between sanctioning and condemning the 'embarrassing institution.' Acceptance of slavery lasted for centuries, and yet went hand in hand with doubts, criticisms, and occasional outright condemnations. Hinduism The roots of slavery stretch back to the earliest Hindu texts, and belief in reincarnation led to the interpretation of slavery as retribution for evil deeds in an earlier life. Servile status originated chiefly from capture in war, birth to a bondwoman, sale of self and children, debt, or judicial procedures. Caste and slavery overlapped considerably, but were far from being identical. Brahmins tried to have themselves exempted from servitude, and more generally to ensure that no slave should belong to 1 someone from a lower caste. -

Cobb and the Law of Negro Slavery Paul Finkelman* From the Revolution until the Civil War Southern intellectu- als, professionals, and politicians developed and articulated elabo- rate defenses of slavery. The most significant proslavery legal scholar was Thomas R.R. Cobb, a Georgia attorney, law professor and one-time reporter for the Georgia Supreme Court. His trea- tise, An Inquiry into the Law of Negro Slavery in the United States of America,' profoundly illustrates the way antebellum Southern lawyers and judges used their learning and talents to support slavery. Proslavery advocates, such as Cobb, emphatically insisted on the justice and morality-the essential rightness-of slavery. Cobb believed that racially based slavery was a prerequisite for a truly "republican equality"2 because only in such a system were all whites equal in status, regardless of their wealth, property, or sta- tion in life. -

Abstract Pragmatists argue that we can improve our moral principles by testing them in experiments in living. When all affected parties can participate in the construction and interpretation of experiments in living, systematic moral biases are more likely to be corrected. The aboli- tion of slavery offers a case study in pragmatist methods. All post-slavery societies, including Haiti, Jamaica, and the U.S., experimented with free labor regimes. I explore what these experiments were thought to be testing and how contestation by the freed people over the terms of free labor were critical in shaping social understandings of what freedom meant, and in partially correcting racist perceptions of blacks. In all cases, the participation of freed peo- ple led to greater freedom in the emerging labor regimes than would have been established on the basis of the a priori moral arguments of many of white abolitionists. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “Servants, Obey Your Masters”: Southern Representations of the Religious Lives of Slaves Abstract This paper focuses on how representations of the religious lives of slaves, specifically their abilities to comprehend the Bible and flourish spiritually, became an issue that not only propelled the North and South toward the Civil War, but also perpetuated the conflict. Using original documents from the collections housed at Chicago’s Newberry Library, predominantly sermons written by proslavery ministers as well as documents published by missionary organizations, this paper explores the fierce defense of the institution of slavery mounted by proslavery Christians. Specifically, this paper’s interest is in how the representation of slaves by proslavery evangelical Christians as incapable of achieving spiritual flourishing without the aid of white Christians was the lynch pin that held their defense of slavery together.
