SubjectoftheseGuidelines These Test Guidelines apply to all vegetatively propagated varieties of Allium sativum L. II. MaterialRequired 1. Thecompetentauthoritiesdec idewhen,whereandinwhatquantityandqualitytheseed requiredfortestingthevarietyistobedelivered.ApplicantssubmittingmaterialfromaState otherthanthatinwhichthetestingtakesplacemustmakesurethatallcustomsformalitiesare compliedwith.Theminimumquantityofplantmaterialtobesuppliedbytheapplicantin oneorseveralsamplesshouldbe: 50bulbs. 2. The plant material should at least meet the minimum requirements for sprouting capacity,moisturecontentandpurityformarketingplantmaterialinthecountryinwhichthe applicationismade.Itmustbeingoodsanitaryconditionandfreefromvirus,inparticular fromleekyellowstripevirusandonionyellowdwarfvirus. 3. The plant material must not have undergone any treatment unless the competent authoritiesalloworrequestsuchtreatment.Ifithasbeentreated,fulldetailsofthetreatment mustbegiven. III. ConductofTests 1. Theminimumdurationoftestsshouldnormallybetwoindependentgrowingcycle s. 2. Thetestsshouldnormallybeconductedatoneplace.Ifanyimportantcharacteristicof thevarietycannotbeseenatthatplace,thevarietymaybetestedatanadditionalplace. 3. Thetestsshouldbecarriedoutunderconditionsensuringnormal growth.Thesizeof theplotsshouldbesuchthatplantsorpartsofplantsmayberemovedformeasurementand counting without prejudice to the observations which must be made up to the end of the growingperiod.Asaminimum,eachtestshouldinclude atotalof100 plantswhichshould bedividedbetweentwoormorereplicates.Separateplotsforobservationandformeasuring canonlybeusediftheyhavebeensubjecttosimilarenvironmentalconditions. 4. Because of the effect of conditions of stora ge of bulbs on the expression of characteristics, comparison of varieties should be made only on material which has been propagated and stored under the same temperature and humidity conditions (e.g. 15oC to 18oC). 5. Unless otherwise indicated, all observations determined by measurement or counting shouldbemadeon30 plantsorpartstakenfromeachof30 plants. 2. For the assessment of uniformity a population standard of 1% with an acceptance probabilityofatleast95%shouldbeapplied.Inthecaseofasamplesizeof100 plantsthe maximumnumberofoff -typesallowedwouldbe3. 3. Allobservationsontheleaf,foliageandfloweringstemshouldbemadebeforefoliage fall -over. 4. Allobservationsonthebulbsshouldbemadeonbulbsharvestedinthetrial. V. GroupingofVarieties 1. Thecollectionofvarietiestobegrownshouldbedividedintogroupstofacilitatethe assessmentofdistinctness.Ch aracteristicswhicharesuitableforgroupingpurposesarethose whichareknownfromexperiencenottovary,ortovaryonlyslightly,withinavariety.Their variousstatesofexpressionshouldbefairlyevenlydistributedthroughoutthecollection. 2. Itisrecommendedthatthecompetentauthoritiesusethefollowingcharacteristicsfor groupingvarieties: (a) Pseudostem:floweringstem(characteristic10); (b) Clove:colorofscale(characteristic29); (c) Timeofharvestmaturity(characteristic33); (d) Endofdormancyofcloveinbulb(characteristic34). It has been confirmed that the formation of both pigments is of a very similar nature, with (E)-S-(1-propenyl)cysteine sulfoxide (isoalliin) serving as the primary precursor. Upon disruption of the tissue, isoalliin and other S-alk(en)ylcysteine sulfoxides are enzymatically cleaved, yielding prop-1-enyl- containing thiosulfinates [CH3CH = CHS(O)SR; R = methyl, allyl, propyl, 1-propenyl], among others. The latter compounds subsequently react with amino acids to produce the pigments. Whereas the onion and leek-related propyl, prop-1-enyl and methyl derivatives can form pink, pink-red and magenta compounds, those containing the allyl group yield dark blue products after reacting with glycine at pH 5.0. The comparative study of Xylopia aethiopica and Aframomum melegueta powder in respect to their phytochemical and insecticidal properties against C. maculatus was carried out using a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments (0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5g/20g cowpea seeds corresponding to 0.0, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1 and 0.13% v/w) replicated thrice under ambient laboratory condition (28±2°C temperature and 75±5% relative humidity). The phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, cardiac glycoside in both plants, while alkaloids was present in A. melegueta and absent in X. aethiopica. The mortality of C. maculatus increased gradually with exposure time and dosage of the plant powders.

    Andrew’s Rogan Josh Recipe Ingredients: - Garlic/Ginger paste(4 garlic cloves and about 1 inch of fresh ginger chopped if you can’t get the paste - blended with water into a paste) - 2 Tablespoons of oil - 1 lb of meat chopped into cubes (lamb is best but you can use beef or chicken) - 2 or 3 tomatoes (chopped) - 2 onions (finely chopped) - 5 cardamom pods (whole) - 4 cloves - 1 or 2 bay leaves - 5 or 6 black pepper corns - 1 and 1/2 cinnamon sticks - Good teaspoon of cumin seeds - 1 teaspoon of ground coriander - 2 teaspoons of paprika - 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper - 3 or 4 tablespoons of plain yogurt - 1/4 teaspoon of garam masala (not essential - I usually forget about it) - Juice of 1/2 a lemon Heat the oil and brown the meat cubes. Take the meat out and set it to one side. Put the bay leaves, cloves, cardamom, pepper corns and cinnamon into the oil while it’s still hot. Stir it around until the bay leaves change colour and the cloves begin to swell. Add the onions and fry for 5 minutes or so - until they turn a lovely brown colour. Add the ginger/garlic paste and stir for 30 seconds. Now add the coriander, cumin, cayenne and paprika and stir for another 30 seconds. Return the meat and its juices to the pan and stir for 30 seconds. Add the tomato and after a minute or so add 1 tablespoon of yogurt. After stirring in the yogurt until it’s well blended, add the rest of the yogurt.

The bulbs were also used as part of the embalming and mummification process. Onions are biennial herbaceous plants commonly grown as annuals. They are seeded in the fall or early spring, harvested in the summer, and used fresh or stored for winter. They feature a restricted, shallow root system, with unbranched, pure white succulent roots measuring 6 x 6 inches. Much like the perennial grasses of the steppes and plains, Alliums are constantly sloughing off old roots (almost on a daily basis) and developing new feeding roots. As a result they add significant amounts of organic matter to the soil and contribute to much-improved surface soil structure.
