SubjectoftheseGuidelines These Test Guidelines apply to all vegetatively propagated varieties of Allium sativum L. II. MaterialRequired 1. Thecompetentauthoritiesdec idewhen,whereandinwhatquantityandqualitytheseed requiredfortestingthevarietyistobedelivered.ApplicantssubmittingmaterialfromaState otherthanthatinwhichthetestingtakesplacemustmakesurethatallcustomsformalitiesare compliedwith.Theminimumquantityofplantmaterialtobesuppliedbytheapplicantin oneorseveralsamplesshouldbe: 50bulbs. 2. The plant material should at least meet the minimum requirements for sprouting capacity,moisturecontentandpurityformarketingplantmaterialinthecountryinwhichthe applicationismade.Itmustbeingoodsanitaryconditionandfreefromvirus,inparticular fromleekyellowstripevirusandonionyellowdwarfvirus. 3. The plant material must not have undergone any treatment unless the competent authoritiesalloworrequestsuchtreatment.Ifithasbeentreated,fulldetailsofthetreatment mustbegiven. III. ConductofTests 1. Theminimumdurationoftestsshouldnormallybetwoindependentgrowingcycle s. 2. Thetestsshouldnormallybeconductedatoneplace.Ifanyimportantcharacteristicof thevarietycannotbeseenatthatplace,thevarietymaybetestedatanadditionalplace. 3. Thetestsshouldbecarriedoutunderconditionsensuringnormal growth.Thesizeof theplotsshouldbesuchthatplantsorpartsofplantsmayberemovedformeasurementand counting without prejudice to the observations which must be made up to the end of the growingperiod.Asaminimum,eachtestshouldinclude atotalof100 plantswhichshould bedividedbetweentwoormorereplicates.Separateplotsforobservationandformeasuring canonlybeusediftheyhavebeensubjecttosimilarenvironmentalconditions. 4. Because of the effect of conditions of stora ge of bulbs on the expression of characteristics, comparison of varieties should be made only on material which has been propagated and stored under the same temperature and humidity conditions (e.g. 15oC to 18oC). 5. Additionaltestsforspecialpurposes maybeestablished. TG/162/4 Garlic,2001 -04 -04 -4- IV. MethodsandObservations 1. Unless otherwise indicated, all observations determined by measurement or counting shouldbemadeon30 plantsorpartstakenfromeachof30 plants. 2. For the assessment of uniformity a population standard of 1% with an acceptance probabilityofatleast95%shouldbeapplied.Inthecaseofasamplesizeof100 plantsthe maximumnumberofoff -typesallowedwouldbe3. 3. Allobservationsontheleaf,foliageandfloweringstemshouldbemadebeforefoliage fall -over. 4. Allobservationsonthebulbsshouldbemadeonbulbsharvestedinthetrial. V. GroupingofVarieties 1. Thecollectionofvarietiestobegrownshouldbedividedintogroupstofacilitatethe assessmentofdistinctness.Ch aracteristicswhicharesuitableforgroupingpurposesarethose whichareknownfromexperiencenottovary,ortovaryonlyslightly,withinavariety.Their variousstatesofexpressionshouldbefairlyevenlydistributedthroughoutthecollection. 2. Itisrecommendedthatthecompetentauthoritiesusethefollowingcharacteristicsfor groupingvarieties: (a) Pseudostem:floweringstem(characteristic10); (b) Clove:colorofscale(characteristic29); (c) Timeofharvestmaturity(characteristic33); (d) Endofdormancyofcloveinbulb(characteristic34). VI. CharacteristicsandSymbols 1. To assess distinctness, uniformity and stability, the characteristics and their states as givenintheTableofCharacteristicsshouldbeused. 2. Notes(numbers),forthe purposesofelectronicdataprocessing,aregivenoppositethe statesofexpressionforeachcharacteristic. 3. Legend: (*) Characteristicsthatshouldbeusedonallvarietiesineverygrowingcycleoverwhich theexaminationsaremadeandalwaysbein cludedinthevarietydescriptions,except when the state of expression of a preceding characteristic or regional environmental conditionsrenderthisimpossible.
