THE following notes on colonies of the Gannet (Sula bassana) in Iceland are based on two personal visits in 1932 and 1933, and on one by my brother, Sub.-Lieut. P. L. Roberts, R.N., in 1934. There are at present six islands off the Icelandic coast where Gannets breed, and four of these—Brandur, Hellisey, Sulnasker and Geldungur, are close together in the Vestmannaeyjar, a small group of volcanic islands off the south-west coast. There is also a colony on Eldey off Reykjanes, and another on Grfmsey off the north coast. In his monograph on the Gannet (1), J. H. Gurney mentions all of these except Hellisey, which is the largest colony in the Vestmannaeyjar group, but the information he was able to obtain was scanty, and his estimate of the numbers was, in his own words, " open to amendment ". On August 18th, 1932, I visited the Vestmannaeyjar colonies in company with J. A. Beckett. A full account of this expedition, together with a map and photograph, has already been published (2), so a short summary only will be given here. It was too rough to land on any of the islands, but we were able to form a fairly accurate estimate of the number of breeding-birds by sailing slowly round each rock close under the cliffs. The method of assessing the numbers was to count all the adult birds on the rocks themselves. The census was greatly facilitated by the geological structure of the rock, which caused the birds to sit in definite rows on the ledges, and it would otherwise have been almost impossible to count them.

    ANNAL OF MAGMATIC EVENTS IN ICELAND 1900-2010 Páll Einarsson Institute of Earth Sciences, University of Iceland (June 2018) Introduction This annal is compiled in order to facilitate the use of the Icelandic Analog Seismograph Archive (seismis.hi.is) for the studies of magmatic events in the crust of Iceland. Both confirmed eruptions and unconfirmed events are listed, but in separate chapters. A large part of the information on the activity of Icelandic volcanoes is difficult to access. A good part of it is assembled in the books and publications of Sigurður Þórarinsson, notably his treatises of Hekla (Þórarinsson 1967), the Vatnajökull region (Þórarinsson 1974) and Katla (Þórarinsson 1975). The rest is scattered throughout the literature, to a large extent in Icelandic, and inaccessible to researchers elsewhere. Recent overviews are provided in the book „Náttúruvá“ (Sólnes et al., 2013) and on the webpage of the Catalog of Icelandic Volcanoes (icelandicvolcanos.is). An overview of short-term seismic precursors of Icelandic eruptions is given by Einarsson (2018). Terms and definitions Volcanological terms used in Iceland may in some instances deviate from the ones used in other areas. This results from the somewhat special circumstances of a subaerial divergent plate boundary. Volcanic structures are exposed on the surface that are usually submerged by ocean and the volcanism often is of areal extent. Walker (1993) used the term central volcano to describe areas of intense volcanism in the Tertiary lavas of Eastern Iceland and found them to be associated with dyke swarms. He used the term volcanic system for the structural unit consisting of a central volcano and associated dyke swarms.

Iceland is a party to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. As a party to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Iceland has ratified most of the conventions of the organisation on maritime safety (SOLAS et al.), pollution controls (MARPOL) and the responsibility of owners and operators. Iceland is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) which, inter alia, means that the same rules on trade, services and environmental issues apply in Iceland as in the internal market of the European Union. Iceland has also participated in the work of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in the field of maritime safety and pollution control. The number is rather low compared to most of the European countries. However, most of the bird populations in Iceland are large. The species belonging to Anatidae, Charadrii and Alcidae are particularly prominent in the Icelandic fauna. Thousands of pairs of ducks and grey geese, hundreds of thousands of pairs of waders, and a few million pairs of auks breed in Iceland. Few breeding species but large populations are characteristic of the Icelandic bird fauna. It is equally important for Iceland as it is for other countries to identify Important Bird Areas (IBAs). Some Icelandic publications have listed important bird areas and underlined their conservation value. The book Votlendi (Wetlands), published by the Icelandic Environment Union (Garðarsson 1975), contained a list of important wetlands in Iceland, all of which were later listed in Grimmett & Jones (1989) in which data for IBAs in Iceland were first compiled.
