3 | NAAA ON THE BLOCK | MARCH 2020 www.naaa.com PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Icing on the Cake

Birthdays usually include a baked confection with candles, but for the 63 NAAA auction members listed in this issue who are celebrating milestone anniversaries this year, maintaining a successful business decade after decade is no piece of cake.

In today’s commercial environment, only a bit more than one-third of businesses — between 34 percent and 36 percent — survive to their 10th year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

And the average age of an S&P 500 company is under 20 years — down from 60 years in the 1950s.

So for these auctions to achieve a decade or more of not just surviving, but thriving, through recessions, regulations, and technological revolutions, is proof of their years of commitment, hard work, and the ability to adapt to the changing business landscape. That longevity and growth is a testament to their good management, good employees, and good customer service.

As NAAA president, I’m honored to congratulate those members who are marking milestone anniversaries this year, and I’m proud to say that this association is dedicated to the ongoing success of all our members.

The benefits and services NAAA provides — education and instructional programs, safety awareness and training, leadership development, advocacy at the national level with a political action committee, publications, conferences and networking events, and policies for best practices — are there to support the enrichment and advancement of every member’s business.

You’ll find two examples in these pages with articles about the exciting highlights of the upcoming NAAA President CAR Conference this month (that I know you won’t want to miss!), and how we have created a Safety Training Kit that makes the online Safe T. Sam instructional series available on DVD and USB flash drive to expand the accessibility of NAAA’s safety certification program.

That’s why I believe that no matter what age and achievement your company is celebrating, the value of being a member of the NAAA puts the icing on the cake. Happy anniversary!
