These plans support the council’s priorities which were agreed earlier this year. For a copy of the full and detailed Area Plan for Barrow, as well as a copy of Cumbria County Council’s new Council Plan go to cumbria.gov.uk/community Achievements: what we have done in Barrow in 2013/14 Provided start-up support for 9 new social enterprise businesses. Supported the delivery of a new £22 million academy building in 2013/14. Over the past year 526 service users have benefitted from the council’s reablement service which allows people to live independently at home. The first directly elected Youth Council in Cumbria was established in Barrow. The Youth Council actively get involved in local democracy and have a place on the Local Committee’s Children and Young People’s Working Group. The Local Committee continues to support the work of Barrow Sports Council by providing officer support and funds for grants and a free holiday sports programme. Over the last three years the County Council has invested £12.8 million in upgrading two primary schools in the area; Barrow Island Primary School and St Georges Primary Top: Furness Academy School and has built a brand new school at Bottom: St Georges Vickerstown, Walney. In particular, the local Member for Walney North raised his concerns regarding the potential increase in vehicle movement on Red Ley Lane during both the construction phase and on completion of the proposed aerodrome for use by helicopters. A discussion took place regarding the current 60 mph speed limit on the length of highway concerned and it was suggested that this be reduced to 30 mph and the upgrading of Red Lay Lane should also be taken into consideration. It was suggested that BAE representatives be invited to meet the Sub-Group on an informal basis and the Chair of the Local Committee agreed to investigate this further.

    Planning 11-16 education for Barrow A consultation document October 2007 Planning 11-16 education for Barrow Introduction We have in front of us a very exciting opportunity to reshape, modernise and improve the network of secondary schools and other educational facilities in the Barrow area. This would contribute signifi cantly to the ambitious plans for the town’s regeneration. There are good things happening in Barrow secondary schools, but also there is an awareness that things 2007 11-16 could be even better, so that in future all our young people are inspired and better able to lead fulfi lling lives as individuals, as citizens and in the world of work. We want them to have higher aspirations, improve their educational achievements and secure better life chances. In other words we want to use this opportunity to transform our secondary education in the town. October planning This opportunity arises because the number of secondary school students is set to decrease rapidly taking education for Barrow education for us to a position where there will be a lot more school places than are needed. We need to tackle this situation otherwise it will result in a poor use of resources. The falling student population might also cause serious diffi culties for one or more of the local secondary schools. We have the chance to address the issues of surplus places in a way which allows us to greatly enhance educational provision and outcomes. Some aspects of change are already in the pipeline. Work is well underway on what is called ‘The Barrow Trust School Pathfi nder’.
