Welcome to MPAC’s Film Festival, A Collaboration with UHD’s Center for Critical Race Studies!

Mack Performing Arts Collective (MPAC) is a 501 ( C ) 3 nonprofit with a mission of “cultivating the interest of visual & performing arts by exposing, educating and entertaining”. To further this mission, we have launched our 2nd bi-annual MPAC Film Fest to empower those presently working in the film & entertainment industry or aspiring to get in the business by providing them with invaluable information to enhance their knowledge, skills and the confidence to be successful.

We are beyond excited to fulfill our mission in collaboration with the University of Houston-Downtown’s Center for Critical Race Studies (CCRS). This year’s theme is “Intersections of Entertainment & Activism”. The next three days include celebrity guest speakers, scholars, community leaders, and industry experts, industry panel discussions, competition based short film screenings and special exhibition screenings, monologue competition, vendors row, artist lounge with open mic and a networking wrap up party.

The fest is about connecting industry people and socially conscious enthusiasts from all over to merge in one place for several high-energy art, entertainment, business and education packed days. Although the technical aspects of filmmaking are interesting, discussions centering around “Intersections of Entertainment & Activism” will engage not just the filmmakers and film enthusiasts but the greater community and university as a whole drawing more attendees over the three days. Grammy Award-nominated soul singer, songwriter, pianist Marsha Ambrosius is a great example of how entertainers of all genres use their platform for social change.

MPAC continues to position “It’s A Wrap Educational Workshops and Symposiums” amongst the cream of the crop, by connecting industry professionals with aspiring industry professionals for an informative, yet interesting day. We want our attendees to hear stories good or bad, want you to absorb the knowledge and insight gained from years of experience and being in the trenches, and have validation that you are on the right track or confirmation that you are not...and if you are not, then you will have received direction on how to get there. With that being said, the dialogue will be conversational as much as possible. With the engagement of CCRS, we see how these conversations and actions intersect with activism.

The best part about all of these screenings, panels and networking events, high school students interested in performing, creative and visual arts are awarded scholarships allowing them to attend for absolutely free! Nothing like FREE education AND instruction from the best on how to be successful!

With the help of your donations, continued support and collaborations, MPAC can make an impact. We thank you all for attending and especially thank UHD and CCRS for making this all possible.

Dear MPAC Film Festival Attendees:

Welcome to the 18th Congressional District, the hub for arts and entertainment in the city of Houston, to participate in this exciting festival. We are excited to have you all attend this 2nd Bi-Annual Mack Performing Arts Collective (MPAC) Film Festival. MPAC’s mission to empower those presently working in the film and entertainment industry and those aspiring to join the industry creates a great dynamic and collaborative effort of giving back and ensuring the opportunity and inclusion of young talented and aspiring minds.

America’s increasingly diverse audiences demand film and television content populated with characters whose experiences resonate with their own, who look like them, and with whom they can relate. MPAC is leading the way to ensure that opportunities to engage in the broad array of fields in the industry are as diverse as our country.

The theme for this year, “Intersections of Entertainment & Activism,” comes during a time in our nation when we desperately need to see the talents of those socially conscious put into film and placed on the big stage to speak truth to power.

Again, congratulations to all of you who are seeking to empower others and to be empowered in this most important industry that impacts our culture in so many ways. MPAC is cultivating our future in the film and entertainment industry and I look forward to our continued partnership.

Very truly yours,  Sheila Jackson Lee Member of Congress

Greetings,

As mayor of the City of Houston, I extend a warm and hearty welcome to all participating in the 2018 bi-annual Mack Performing Arts Collective Film Festival held at the University of Houston-Downtown.

An important part of my desired legacy is to expand opportunities in film and television production here in Houston. The motion picture business is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Filmmakers, actors, writers, production and service companies, distributors, financiers and film enthusiasts have traveled near and far for this remarkable showcase of talent and dedication. Houston is a city that supports cinematic storytelling through media and performing arts, as it is a field of interest and an industry that promotes culture, heritage, community celebration and economic impact on our local businesses.

The efforts of Mack Performing Arts Collective, in collaboration with the Center for Critical Race Studies at the University of Houston-Downtown, has resulted in three days of activities including film screenings, panel discussions, monologue competition, performers showcase, and networking platforms giving participants the opportunity to share their talents, expertise and resources with all attendees.

The City of Houston applauds all efforts that inspire creativity and provide an opportunity for emerging filmmakers to excel at this type of film competition. Best wishes for a memorable event and we look forward to supporting the next one. Houston is open for business!

Sincerely,

Sylvester Turner Mayor

MARSHA AMBROSIUS Love enlarges life and makes each experience three-dimensional. It also dramatically amplifies the impact of art.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated soul singer, songwriter, and pianist Marsha Ambrosius catalogs two transformative years via the 16 impassioned, irresistible, and inimitable anthems comprising her third full-length album and first for Entertainment One (eOne)—NYLA. During that time, she met her future husband on the road, married him, and gave birth to the album’s namesake, her daughter Nyla. Now, these moments live and breathe in her biggest and boldest body of work to date.

“Bringing a daughter into the world just added to the size of my heart, which added to the size of my musical experience,” she admits. “Playing a piano isn’t just playing a piano anymore. Writing lyrics isn’t just writing lyrics anymore. I’m channeling something that was completely foreign to me before. It’s real love. I let go of everything, fell in love, and became a wife and mother. The record gives you this storyline.”

Nearly two decades in the game set the stage for this story. After co-founding the gold-certified and influential Floetry, Marsha went from penning tunes for Michael Jackson “Butterflies,” Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx to launching a successful solo career. Her 2011 debut, Late Nights & Early Mornings, bowed at #1 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and #2 on the Top 200 and yielded hits such as the GRAMMY® nominated “Far Away” and “Hope She Cheats On You (With A Basketball Player).” As her profile rose, The First Family - The Obama’s, invited her to perform at The White House for The National Christmas Tree Lighting.

2014 saw the follow-up Friends & Lovers soar to #2 on R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart and #12 on the Top 200 highlighted by collaborations with Dr. Dre, Charlie Wilson and her nephew Skye. In between a relentless tour schedule, she lent her voice to five tracks from Dre’s 2015 chart-dominating and gold-selling swan song, Compton, in addition to high-profile collaborations with the likes of Kanye West, Solange, A Tribe Called Quest, and many more.

In the midst of these accomplishments, NYLA initially took shape during a period of emotional upheaval. “I was losing my mind,” she admits. “Being a creative can be a lonely and cold road. I just didn’t feel like myself. Channeling all of the energy into the music is what helped save my sanity. Poems turned into melodies and a bunch of songs like my personal therapy in a sense. From beginning to end, it’s me letting go of everything I wanted to let go of in my life and experiencing things all over again through Nyla’s eyes.”

She initially teased the impending album with “Luh Ya.” Satiating rabid fan demand, it quickly generated 7 million Spotify streams. Kicking off the campaign, the first single “Old Times” pairs sparse piano keys and subtle bass with a stark vocal that builds towards a rapturous refrain punctuated by fiery falsetto.

“My heart was desperate to have love, but I was also afraid of it,” she confesses. “I wrote ‘Old Times’ before I got married. A year later, it sounded so different. To me, it’s about wanting to preserve that old love and that good feeling when you used to listen to your Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Michael Jackson records. You want to be comfortable, hold your loved ones tight, cry, sing, and pray. It’s all about true feelings for me.”

Pushing the limits of her expansive range, the emotionally charged “Never Be The Same Again” pays tribute to a friend who would be tragically taken from the world too soon. She notably recorded it in one tearful take, and it remains a stand out. “He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and he was stabbed to death,” she sighs. “It’s still difficult to talk about and say he’s not here anymore. We wish we could go back, but we never can. It’s dedicated to his memory. I’m crying out my feelings on this one.”

Elsewhere, Nyla swings from the swaggering strut of “I Got It Bad” to “How High,” which perfectly captures what she describes as a “Marsha Moment.” “I’ve been writing and recording with just me and the keys since I was eight,” she smiles. “Even with all of the bells and whistles. It comes down to great lyrics, a melody, and a strong performance. It’s vulnerable when it’s just me and the piano. There are a lot of those moments.” They’re also impossible not to feel. That’s what makes NYLA so impactful.

“I’m trying to bring feeling back,” Marsha leaves off. “It’s nothing contrived. I’m trying to create music that people can feel again. I felt this. I’m sharing it now.”

Fredi Washington 1903-1994 Fredi Washington, an ivory-skinned African American beauty with exceptional acting talent, was the tragic victim of the racial stereotypes, fears, and prejudices of her time. Unable to develop a career as a serious black actress, and unwilling to pretend to be white she became an important activist and journalist in the field of black performers’ rights.

Born Fredericka Carolyn Washington in Savannah, Georgia, in 1903, Washington was the eldest of five siblings. Her family became part of the Great Migration that brought millions of southern Blacks north in search of jobs and opportunity, and her early childhood was spent in , Pennsylvania. At the age of 16, she moved to New York City to live with a grandmother and aunt, and having taken an interest in acting, she studied at the Christophe School of Languages and the Egri School of Dramatic Writing. Washington soon made her stage debut in a cabaret act called the Happy Honeysuckles and also worked for the W.C. Handy Black Swan Record Company in a clerical position. There, she heard about a new all-black musical show in development called . After working with a dance tutor to improve her skills, Washington auditioned and was chosen to join the chorus, despite her limited experience. She then danced at New York’s Club Alabam’, where a theater producer noticed her and advised her to audition for a new play, Black Boy. Based on the life of boxer Jack Johnson, the 1926 play starred , with Washington appearing under the stage name Edith Warren. It closed after several weeks, but not before Washington’s distinctively light skin had attracted attention.

Dramatic opportunities for black actresses were limited at the time, and Washington spent time during the 1920s touring Europe with a dance partner, Al Moiret, with swank engagements in Paris, Berlin, and London. She returned to the United States, and new roles in the emerging Then in 1934, as if enacting the challenges of her life and career, Washington portrayed a light-skinned black woman who decides to pass as white, in the film Imitation of Life with Claudette Colbert. The film was a popular success, so much so that Washington was accused of being anti-black in real life, an ironic counterpoint to her principled standards. here were many problems throughout Washington’s career. She was often turned down for Black roles because she was too fair skin, and when offered the role of a white woman she would pass it up. “No matter how white I look, on the inside, I feel black,” she proclaimed in 1945.” Washington was classified as a Black American under the one-drop rule (One drop of Black blood in you means you are Black.) In fact, she refused the offers of motion picture studios to feature and promote her as a white movie star, thereby condemning herself to limited roles and opportunities as a “mulatto.” Her later film roles included Drums of the Jungle in 1935 and One Mile from Heaven in 1937.In response to the injustice she experienced, Washington devoted much of the remainder of her professional life to efforts to improve the rights and welfare of African American performers. In 1937, she co-founded the Negro Actors Guild of America and served as its first executive secretary. The Guild worked to reduce stereotyping and increase opportunities for black actors. During the same period, she began working for a weekly New York newspaper, The People’s Voice, published by politician Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., as theater editor and columnist. She was outspoken in her views on racial prejudice in the entertainment industry, and the need for the scions of the film business, in particular, to “…shoulder their full democratic responsibilities.” The theater offered somewhat greater possibilities at this time, and Washington received strong critical notices for her performance in 1939’s Mamba’s Daughters opposite .

Washington also worked with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, advocating for increased black presence in the arts, and served as administrative secretary for the Joint Actors Equity-Theatre League Committee on Hotel Accommodations, lobbying for improved lodging conditions for African American performers As a living testimony to the frustrations of an early generation of black performers during her time, she remains an icon of uncompromising standards today. Her ability to transform the constraints imposed on her art into a life of purposeful activism stands as an inspiration to later generations. She was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1975 and honored with a U.S. Postal Service stamp in the Vintage Black Cinema series of 2008.
