The show opens with the Baltimore opening of a revival of Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew." The cast of the revival is on stage and receiving final instructions. In the cast with producer-actor Fred Graham are his former wife, Lilli; Lois, a singer in whom he is interested, and Bill Calhoun who is Lois' interest. The irresponsible Bill informs Lois that. he has signed Graham's name to a $10,000 IOU for gambling debts. She begs him to reform. Graham and Lilli patch up their differences as they reminisce nostalgically about other shows in which they have appeared together. Graham sends a bouquet to Lois which is delivered in error to Lilli. As ''The Taming of the Shrew" gets under way, Lois, as Bianca, and Bill, as Lucentio, discuss Bianca's inabilityto marry until her older sister has been affianced. Graham, as Petruchio, arrives in search of a rich wife, and although Katharina, played by Lilli, states her inalterable opposition to males, Petruchio agrees to marry her, even though she is not the wife of whom he has dreamed. Lilli discovers that her bouquet was intended for Lois and threatens to leave the show. Her departure is pre- vented by two gangsters who have come to collect the IOU with Graham's signature. How they do this and bring about a reconciliation, we will not divulge here, but we do promise a happy ending.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

We are pleased to welcome James Kinney back to direct his third pro- duction for WVLO after his previous successful productions of "Paint Your Wagon" (1978) and "South Pacific" (1979). He has been a veteran actor and director for numerous musicals and plays in the Santa Clara Valley during the past ten years. He played Fagin in WVLO's 1974 production of "Oliver" and Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady" in 1978. Kinney's other directorial credits include productions for San Jose's Gilbert & Sulllvan Society, Los Gatos-SaratogaCommunity Players, and San Jose Civic Light Opera. His most memorable roles include Ali Hakim, King Pellinore, Dickinson and Jack Point. In 1976 he portrayed Petruchio in a local production of "Kiss Me, Kate." Jim lives in Willow Glen with his wife, Nancy, and two daughters, and teaches in the San Jose Unified School District. His various talents and experi- ences, especially with Shakespearean plays, certainly qualify him for this adaptation of the Bard's best-known work.

STEVEN CARLITZ (Fred/Petruchio) After studying and acting at the Conservatory for the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, Steve came to the Bay Area. He has appeard in produc- tions at Foothill College, Stanford University, Palo Alto's Theatreworks and Light Opera, Redwood City Community Theatre and most recently in Sunnyvale Community Players' "Irene" and "Pajama Game." We are proud to have Steve make his Santa Clara Valley debut on our stage l and look forward to repeat performances in the future.

POLLY HOWARD (Lilli/Katherine) Polly has a degree in English and Voice from the University of Maryland, has taught in Sunny- vale and is currently studying dance, voice and acting. She has appeared in three previous productions for WVLO, "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Pal Joey" and as Guenevere in last season's "Camelot." Other credits include Palo Alto Players' "Guys & Dolls," Saratoga Drama Group's "Kismet," and Ohlone College's "Man of La Mancha." Polly says she has "graduated from sweet young thing parts to strong woman roles, i.e., Lalume in "Kismet" and Aldonza in "Man of La Mancha." She loves the exciting roles of the strong-willed Kate, but vulnerable Lilli.

SCOTT E. HERMAN (Bill/Lucentio) Scott, a former Navy pilot, has lived on the Peninsula for the past 5 years, and has hopes of becoming an airline pilot. He performed in productions in Texas and Japan and directed/ produced "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" at Moffett Field. Locally he has appeared as Don in "Butterflies Are Free" for Redwood City Com- munity Theatre and as Woody in Sunnyvale Community Players' recent production of "Finian's Rainbow." His hobbies include outdoor sports, photography, and motorcycling as well as flying.

NANCY KENDZIERSKI (Lois/Bianca) Nancy was born in New York and graduated from Iowa State University where she performed in "A Little Night Music" and "Come Blow Your Horn." Locally she has appeared in productions for Palo Alto Players & Light Opera and Theatre- works, Menlo Players Guild, Foothill College and Redwood City Community Theatre. She portrayed Mary Harlan in Sunnyvale Community Player's "Last of Mrs. Lincoln" and last month appeared as Laurie in Palo Alto Players' "Oklahoma!". An accomplished pianist, Nancy also played for "Jesus Christ Superstar" for San Jose CLO and "West Side Story" in Los Gatos. We are pleased to welcome such a versatile and talented actress to WVLO for her first role with us. SAM JOHN SMITH (Harry/Baptista) Since this is Sam John's ninth production with WVLO, he is a familiar face to theater goers in this Valley. His most memorable roles on this stage include Jacob in "Paint Your Wagon," Doctor in "Robert & Elizabeth" and his latest, Captain Brackett in "South Pacific." His local credits include numerous Gilbert & Sullivan performances, the most recent in "Princess Ida." In Southern California, Sam John appeared in several opera and light opera presentations in the Hollywood Bowl and Los Angeles Conserva- /' tory for Music. He still sings opera in this area, too, for he just completed EI Camino's "Die Fledermaus" in which he sang the role of Eisen- stein.

CARL BALLOU (Gremio) "Kiss Me, Kate" will be Carl's fifty-sixth produc- tion! (Not all with WVLO, however.) In addition to acting in the show, Carl is the Lighting Designer and Cast Photographer. For WVLO, he has performed in "Brigadoon," "My Fair Lady" and "South Pacific," and was the Assistant Director in our last production of "Wonderful Town." Carl is such a versatile talent, he is at home anywhere in the theater, whether it is dangling from a ladder or scaffold to hang lights, drops or curtains, to singing and dancing as he did in Saratoga Drama Group's "Hello Dolly." He also spends a great deal of time behind his camera, for photography has become an important part of his life.

ROBERT SEDGWICK (Hortensio) Bob moved to California from Washington, D.C. four years ago after receiving his law degree from American University. He teaches Business Law and handles legal aid at De Anza College. Bob passed the California Bar Exam and would like to enter private practice. He made his debut in community theater on our stage in last year's production of "Oklahoma!" and the performing bug bit him! He enjoyed it so much, he went on to sing and dance in SDG's "Hello Dolly' and returned to WVLO for the last production of "Wonderful Town." His talent has brought him to this major supporting role after only three pro- ductions, so we predict that you will see Bob in a leading role in this Valley in the very near future!

CARMEN BARRERAS (Hattie) "Lani," as Carmen is called, studied music at UCLA and Music Academy in Santa Barbara. She made her debut in musical comedy with WVLO as Bloody Mary in "South Pacific" in 1979 and won the Best Actress Award. A surgical appliance technician, she uses her spare time to direct and produce children's choral and theatrical productions with the "Music Factory."
