A positive and open mindset lends itself to learn information and skills that can transfer beyond the classroom. Halloween 2018 Helping Your Child Learn about Stories or Narratives 1. Start by reading with your child, beginning with looking at the title and any graphics or pictures on the cover as you predict what the book might be about. 2. As you read, stop and ask your child to make predictions about what might happen next. You can ask your child if they see something on the page that helps them to predict. This type of discussion can help your child think about the sequence of events within a story. 3. When you are done reading, go through the book a second time and talk about the different parts of a story. You might like to ask a few of the following questions: - Who or what is the story about? - Where does the story take place? What time of year is it and how do you know? - Is there a problem that happens? - How does the character feel about it? - Was there a plan to fix the problem? - What events happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story? - How did the character feel at the end and what was learned? - Did some of your child’s predictions happen in the story? - Why might the author want to create such a story? Thumbs up or down for this book! References: http://www.readwritethink.org/parent-afterschool-resources/tips-howtos/help-child-write-story-a-30593. html Servery~ November 2018
