FELICITATION TO THE DEPUTY SPEAKER THE PRIME MINISTER (SHRI NARENDRA MODI): All the parties and all the Members of the House have unanimously elected Dr. Thambidurai as Deputy-Speaker as per the highest traditions of this House. First of all, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the House particularly to all the Members of the opposition for this. Dr. Thambidurai has held the Office of the Deputy- Speaker earlier also and he has been guiding and conducting the business of the House. He has been a very active member of this House. His knowledge and experience have benefitted this House and the nation as well. He is also an academician. The most important thing about him is that he is an agriculturist also. I am quite sure that his experience would come in very handy in conducting the business of this House. I would also like to assure him that the Government would extend its full support to him in discharging his duties as Deputy-Speaker. SHRI MALLIKARJUN KHARGE: Dr. Thambidurai is a very senior leader. He has also held the office of Minister of Law, Company Affairs and Surface Transport. He has also held the office of Deputy Speaker earlier and he has seen this House very closely and he understands the functioning of this House very well. He is a man of letters. He also runs various NGOs and education societies. A man of this stature has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the House. I heartily congratulate him. I hope that whenever we would like to raise the voice of people, he would allow us to do so whole-heartedly. DR. P. VENUGOPAL: On behalf of my party General Secretary and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and on my own behalf, I would like to convey heartiest congratulations to Dr. Thambidurai on his unanimous election to the office of the Deputy-Speaker of this House. It is a matter of great happiness that our leader of AIADMK Parliamentary Party has been elected as Deputy-Speaker of this 16th Lok Sabha. He is an economist and an educationist. He has been an elected Member of this House for the fifth time now. He served as Deputy- Speaker between 1985 and 1989 in the Eight Lok Sabha. His impartiality in conducting the business of the House is known to all the Hon. Members who were the Members of the last Lok Sabha. SHRI SUDIP BANDYOPADHYAY: It is good precedent that we elected you unanimously as the hon. Speaker. Now, it has been followed by the election of Dr. Thambidurai as the Deputy-Speaker. We have worked together since last many years in this House. We believe Dr. Thambidurai is very sensible. I hope that objective and independent decisions will be taken by Dr. Thambidurai as he normally takes. SHRI BHARTRUHARI MAHTAB: It was in the Eighth Lok Sabha when the Treasury Benches had a very robust majority of more than 400 Members and the largest opposition party was not given the Deputy Speaker's post. It went to Anna DMK which was the second largest and Dr. Thambidurai was elected as the Deputy Speaker. In the 16th Lok Sabha again, the same thing is being repeated and the Deputy Speaker's post has unanimously come to our friend Dr. Munisamy Thambidurai. We have worked together in various Committees. We have seen how very articulately he has been putting forth specific points of view and how he has also been able to work with others. I hope, in the future, as Deputy Speaker of this House, he will guide us and guide this House for better results. THE MINISTER OF HEAVY INDUSTRIES AND PUBLIC ENTERPRISES (SHRI ANANT GANGARAM GEETE): I, on behalf of my Party and my own behalf, congratulate Dr. Thambidurai ji for being elected unanimously as the Deputy Speaker of this House. He had discharged the duties of the Office of the Deputy Speaker earlier also successfully. He has a very long experience and this House will certainly get benefit of his experience. Till now, he was representing the AIADMK. Since now he has become the Deputy Speaker so now onwards he has become impartial. There are so many state level parties in the House who play an important role in the national politics. I hope that all the state level parties would get proper recognition in the House. SHRI A.P. JITHENDER REDDY: On my own behalf and on behalf of the leader of my Party, I congratulate our colleague Dr. Thambidurai for becoming the Deputy-Speaker of this House unanimously. He has always been supporting my leader in achieving Telangana all these years. Now, also we hope that in future also, he will give us more chance to speak. SHRI P. KARUNAKARAN: All of us are happy that Dr. Thambidurai has been unanimously elected as the Deputy-Speaker of the 16th Lok Sabha. I am sure that he will be able to perform in that post because he has a long service as the Deputy-Speaker, as a member of the Panel of Chairman, and a Minister holding various portfolios in Tamil Nadu also. We have been watching him as an eloquent and efficient Parliamentarian. He has been intervening in almost all the issues. He was not only raising the issues concerning Tamil Nadu, but also national issues and other issues too. As far as the number in the Opposition is concerned, it may be less but as a Member raising many of the issues, he would feel that sufficient time and justice need to be given to the opposition. SHRI MULAYAM SINGH YADAV: I, on behalf of my party and on my own behalf, congratulate Dr. Thambidurai ji for being elected to the Office of Deputy Speaker.

Under Mamata Banerjee’s regime, unrest and distrust defines and dominates the atmosphere in the state. There is a no sphere, be it political, social or religious which is today free from violence and instability. It is well known that from this very land of Bengal, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore had given the message of peace and unity to the whole world by establishing Visva Bharati at Santiniketan.
