Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. If you would like to add to, or alter, an entry please send an email to [email protected] 3 4 4 HERO An influential group made up of Dego and Mark Mac, who act as the creative force; Gus Lawrence and Ian Bardouille take care of business.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 © Copyright by Carl Douglas Schottmiller 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Reading RuPaul’s Drag Race: Queer Memory, Camp Capitalism, and RuPaul’s Drag Empire by Carl Douglas Schottmiller Doctor of Philosophy in Culture and Performance University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor David H Gere, Chair This dissertation undertakes an interdisciplinary study of the competitive reality television show RuPaul’s Drag Race, drawing upon approaches and perspectives from LGBT Studies, Media Studies, Gender Studies, Cultural Studies, and Performance Studies. Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise. ii While most scholars analyze RuPaul’s Drag Race primarily through content analysis of the aired television episodes, this dissertation combines content analysis with ethnography in order to connect the television show to tangible practices among fans and effects within drag communities.

TO THE UNIVERSITY HONORS COLLEGE: As thesis advisor for __________________________, I have read this paper and find it satisfactory. ______________________ Thesis Advisor __________________________ Date Precis This study examines changes in sexual references in lyrics by focusing on the number of references and the language used in the sexual reference. The corpus was made up of 1168 sexual references. Each reference was classified into references to sex acts (e.g., oral, anal or vaginal sex, etc.; N= 610), to body parts (i.e., ass, pussy, etc.; N= 127), to terms of reference or address (i.e., baby momma, lover, etc.; N= 220) or to other sexual behaviors (i.e., rape, prostitution, etc.; N= 211). Only one paper that looks directly at change in lyrics over time is Hall et al (2011). Their approach differs from mine in purpose and thus focus. They did not examine the change in type of sexual references over time. My data sample for this paper is the lyrics from the top-ranked songs on the Billboard weekly listing, selecting the top song for the first week of each month from 1960 through 2011 (610 songs). I found that there have been many changes since 1960, both quantitatively and qualitatively. There has been an increase in the number of sexual references since 1960. The vast majority of the sex act references (441 out of 610) were references to vaginal sex; the first non-vaginal reference was a reference to manual stimulation in 1972.

This dissertation would not have been successful if not for their intellectual rigor, wisdom, and generosity. This dissertation was just a dim thought until Judith Halberstam powered it with her unique and indelible iridescence. Nayan Shah and Shelley Streeby have shown me the best kind of work American Studies has to offer. Their formidable ideas have helped shape these pages. Tak Fujitani and Lisa Yoneyama have always offered me their time and office hospitality whenever I needed critical feedback. I want to thank them for their precise questions and open door.
