2 INTRODUCTION

As of March 2021, under Support A Pond initiative, GuruJal has been working on the restoration & rejuvenation of 12 pond sites and operation and maintenance of 3 completed pond sites in rural areas of Gurugram District. GuruJal Society as a technical and monitoring support unit to Municipal Corporation of Gurugram has been working on the restoration & rejuvenation of 25 pond sites in their jurisdiction. GuruJal has also been providing monitoring and evaluation support to Municipal Corporation of Faridabad for the restoration & rejuvenation of 22 ponds sites in their jurisdiction.

Under Biodiversity Management initiative, development of Damdama and Kherla Biodiversity Park by GuruJal has been moving forward with the pre-study being completed for the development of the park and preparation of Detailed Project Report under progress.

Under Waterproofing intervention, GuruJal has completed the functionality checking of 640 rain water harvesting structures in the district and worked on the construction of 10 new rain water harvesting structures in 10 government schools of Gurugram District.

Under Connect The Drops initiative, GuruJal through collaboration with various organisations such as academic institutions, NGOs etc. is creating awareness and sensitizing people regarding the importance of water and biodiversity conservation. Regular meetings and sessions have been conducted with various stakeholders to elaborate GuruJal’s scope of work. Also, training programs have been conducted for the capacity building of the team.

In the following sections, the work updates, events and achievements of GuruJal under each vertical has been described in detail.

Major updates of the month under ‘Support A Pond’

1. Daultabad and Budhera Pond Sites Visit by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram

Daultabad Pond Site: Daultabad pond site was visited by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram along with members from PowerGrid and GuruJal Society on 19th March 2021 to review the undergoing pond restoration and rejuvenation work.

Dressing and preparation of the base and trimming of the wetland has been completed. Also, steel work and shuttering for the wall of the collection tank and RCC work for the raft foundation has been completed at the site. Further, RCC steel work for settler and ABR tanks and casting of RCC for the wall of WWTP is under progress at the site.

Budhera Pond Site: Budhera pond site was also visited by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram along with the members from RITES and GuruJal Society on 19th March 2021 to review the undergoing pond restoration and rejuvenation work.

2. Daula Pond Site The WWTP plant of Rootzone technology at Daula pond site has been completed and is functioning properly. Fencing and pavement work near the WWTP has been completed.

3. Hariahera Pond Site Construction of the baffle wall and fencing of some part of the pond area has been completed. Also, levelling around the pond site and installation of entrance gate (MS Iron) is under progress at the site.

4. Mojabad Pond Site Construction of the retaining wall and cleaning and removal of the sludge from the tanks has been completed.

As per the readings collected from the AWLR installed at Mojabad pond site, the groundwater level recorded was40.30 meters on 15th February 2021 and 39.92 meters as of 17th March 2021.

5. Bilaspur Pond Site Channelization of the waste water with the help of RCC pipeline and manhole has been completed at the site. Also, development of the embankment, slope stabilization around the landscaping area and removal of rank vegetation (unwanted wild grass and plants) from the landscaping area has been completed at the pond site.

6. Palasoli Pond Site Casting of the RCC wall and shuttering of the slab of WWTP has been completed. Further, steel work (reinforcement) is in progress at the pond site.

7. MCG Pond Restoration & Rejuvenation Detailed Project Report for the restoration and rejuvenation of Behrampur pond site is under progress by GuruJal Society. Following is the site plan of the pond site:

Major updates of the month under ‘Biodiversity Management’

1. Nature Photography Walk in the Aravalli Hills GuruJal Society in collaboration with CEDAR and Navjyoti Foundation (NIF) conducted a Nature Photography Walk in the Aravalli hills of Damdama and Kherla Biodiversity Park on 7th March 2021. The aim of the walk was to create awareness and engage people including citizens, environmentalists, students and others in the development of the biodiversity park.

17 The event was a huge success with around 114 people from the age group of 8 to 74 participated in the walk. People across different backgrounds such as researchers, photographers, bloggers etc. participated in the walk. District Town Planner (Planning), Gurugram; Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO), Sohna Block and Forest Ranger also joined the team on the nature walk.

With the help of Navjyoti India Foundation (NIF), we received the support from almost 35 volunteers from Damdama and Kherla villages throughout the event. Also, sharing of knowledge on the importance of Aravallis, impact of human interventions on the region and discussions on the same with the participants was done to increase their engagement and to fulfill the purpose of the walk.

2. GuruJal’s Team Visit to Aravalli Biodiversity Park GuruJal team visited the Aravalli Biodiversity Park on 11th March 2021, with an aim to understand the initial steps to be taken for the ecological restoration of degraded area of Damdama and Kherla Biodiversity Park. For the same, meeting with the team of C.R. Babu was done to understand the process and action plan for the development of biodiversity park in detail.

3. Plantation Drive at Budhera Pond Site Plantation Drive at Budhera village of Block was conducted on 27th February 2021 by GuruJal Society along with the students from Shree Guru Gobind Singh Tricentenary (SGT) university and the local community. The aim was to create an ecological/biodiversity zone through plantation of native species around the pond site and simultaneously create awareness among students and engage the local community in the project. Around 250 plants were planted which includes majorly the native species of Aravallis such as Neem, Jamun, Cassia, Pipal and others.

4. MCG Plantation Drive 2021 In the month of February-March, MCG has conducted the Plantation Drive in the public spaces of Municipal Corporation of Gurugram with the support of GuruJal Society. Sites for plantation were selected based upon the feasibility as per availability of fencing, tree guards etc. Till now 15 sites such as parks, stadium etc. has been covered for plantation (Annexure – II).

Construction of new rain water harvesting structures in 10 government schools of MCG and MC Farrukhnagar area, under the CSR support of SBI Card. Vetting of designs and administrative approvals is being done by GuruJal and the work is being implemented by Plan India Foundation.

Major updates of the month under ‘Connect the Drops’

1. Meeting with Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO):

Meeting was conducted under the chairmanship of Chairman GuruJal Society cum Deputy Commissioner Gurugram on 26th February 2021 with officials from the forest department regarding the permission for the development of Biodiversity Park and Nursery in Damdama and Kherla villages. It was discussed in the meeting that permission will be required from the forest department for pruning and uprooting during the implementation of the work in the areas under PLPA Section 4 & 5 and GuruJal will submit the Detailed Project Report of Nursery and Biodiversity Park to Forest Department.

2. Training Programme on Decentralized Wastewater, Fecal Sludge and Septage Management

Members of GuruJal team attended the Advanced Training Programme on Decentralized Wastewater, Fecal Sludge and Septage Management conducted by Centre for Science and Environment from 9th to 12th March 2021. Training was focused towards – designing and planning of Decentralized Waste Water Treatment (DWWT) system, onsite sanitation systems, fecal sludge management and treatment technologies, co-treatment of septage and fecal sludge in STPs and business models and financial aspects of FSM

3. Collaboration with Academic Institutions GuruJal Society has collaborated with schools in Gurugram i.e., Amity International School, Sector 46; Amity International School, Sector 43; Golden Heights School and Sun City School with an aim to create awareness about environmental conservation among students and engage them in various verticals of GuruJal. MoU has been signed with Amity International School, Sector 46 to involve the school students in the IEC activities designed by GuruJal (list of activities attached in Annexure - II).

4. Community Mobilization at Daultabad Pond Site Community meeting was conducted at Daultabad village on 19th February 2021 with an aim to engage the local community in the pond restoration and rejuvenation work at Daultabad pond site. Sarpanch, youth and elderly of the village discussed about their perspective on water conservation and history and significance of the village pond.

5. Meeting with Pond and Waste Water Management Authority

Meeting was held with Haryana Pond and Waste Water Management Authority on 3rd March 2021 at Panchkula and on 15th March 2021 under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Gurugram to review the works of pond restoration and rejuvenation that is being done by GuruJal Society. Following were the outcomes from both the meetings:

• All information regarding pond restoration and rejuvenation done under the ambit of GuruJal Society will be shared with HPWWMA on a regular basis to avoid duplicity of efforts. • Before commencement of any new project, the project report would be shared with HPWWMA by GuruJal Society for information. • A target of 60 ponds is taken for pond restoration and rejuvenation by GuruJal Society in 2021. • The targeted water bodies should be in priority in the order of polluted/overflowing, polluted (but not in use), polluted (but not overflowing), not polluted and dry ponds. • The end use of the treated water would need to augment as an alternative water source for fishing, cattle wading and micro-irrigation.

6. Meeting with CEO, Haryana Water Resources Authority

Meeting was held on 3rd March 2021 with the Chief Executive Officer, Haryana Water Resources Authority regarding the rejuvenation of Damdama lake and Ghata Jheel in Gurugram district. Data points that should be considered and the process to be followed for the study of the lake and Jheel were discussed.

7. National Water Mission’s ‘Catch the Rain Campaign’

‘Catch the Rain’ Campaign

Under the National Water Mission’s ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, District Administration Gurugram will be conducting a Rain Water Harvesting awareness and enforcement drive in Gurugram District. For the same meeting was held on 17th March 2021 under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Gurugram along with the officials from Town and Country Planning Department, HSVP, MCG, GMDA and GuruJal Society. Following are the major outcomes from the meeting:

• Rainwater Harvesting structures in all the government buildings and large-scale establishments such as group housing societies, corporate offices, commercial complexes, institutional buildings, schools etc. will be monitored and made functional before monsoon i.e., 30th June 2021. • A committee will be formed consisting of one member from MCG i.e., Chief Engineer, MCG; one member from HSVP; one member from Town and Country Planning i.e., DTP Planning or Enforcement; one member from GMDA and one member of GuruJal Society (Member Secretary, GuruJal Society cum District Development and Panchayat Officer, Gurugram) that will ensure the successful implementation of the campaign. • A public notice will be issued mentioning about the conducting of RWH Drive that will include monitoring and functionality checks of the rain water harvesting structures and taking of strict actions in case of violation of the norms.

Football Exhibition Match

On the World Water Day i.e., 22 March 2021, GuruJal Society with the collaboration of Fast FC Academy organized a Football Exhibition Match under the flagship of Deputy Commissioner Gurugram to raise awareness about value of water among school students of Gurugram. The event was organized under National Water Mission's “Catch the Rain” Campaign which was announced by our Hon’ble Prime Minister on 28/02/2021. The objective was to highlight sustainable, efficient and inclusive methods to manage water resources and to nurture students as the brand ambassadors for environmental sustainability. Taking environment as a theme the two teams where formed named as Ped (Tree) and Paani (Water). Total students participated in the event were 80+ ranging from the age group of 4 to 18 years. Students from schools i.e., Scottish High, Made Easy, Pathways, Amity, Manav Rachna, Suncity etc. along with their parents participated in the match. During the event, students participated in water pledge, poster making and quiz-like activities related to Water Conservation.

8. Panel Discussion on World Water Day 2021 A member of GuruJal Society was invited to join the panel discussion organized by The NorthCap University on the occasion of World Water Day i.e., 20th March 2021.

9. Social Media Outreach GuruJal Society through various social media platforms has been trying to create awareness among people across places about the importance of water and biodiversity conservation. In the last month, GuruJal has been able to reach and engage more than 17,000 people through our posts regarding the environmental issues, its conservation and updates on the works that is being carried out for the same.
