  • The Last Two Decades Have Witnessed the Growth of Video and Computer Gaming from a Small Hobbyist Pastime to a Major Form of Entertainment
Chris Lynskey STS 145 Case History Leisure Suit Larry The last two decades have witnessed the growth of video and computer gaming from a small hobbyist pastime to a major form of entertainment. During its integration into modern culture, gaming has necessarily adopted certain traits that are inherent in human existence, namely violence and sex. Violence has actually been an integral part of games from the very beginning, whether it was the destruction of enemy tanks or missions against invading aliens. The integration of sex into gaming though, has taken a considerably different course. Although there were several small niches of games devoted to that topic in the early 1980s, it wasn’t until the late 1980s and early 1990s that sex began to gain acceptance as a part of mainstream gaming. Perhaps the most significant catalyst to that process was the highly popular Leisure Suit Larry series produced by Sierra and developed in large by Al Lowe. The history of Leisure Suit Larry begins with that of its publishing company, Sierra On-Line. It was incorporated in 1979 by Ken and Roberta Williams in a small town near Yosemite. They decided to direct their focus to a then unexplored genre, adventure games. Although their first big success was the King’s Quest series, in the company’s early days they received national attention due to a small game written by Chuck Benton. This game was certainly a unique element of Sierra’s catalog at the time: it was the company’s only non-graphic work and their sole adult-oriented game.

  • The Late Modern Hero's Quest for Meaning Norman
UPPSALA UNIVERSITY Institution of Theology Social Sciences of Religion E, 30 hp Spring 2012 Instructor: Önver Cetrez & Valerie DeMarinis Grading Teacher: Önver Cetrez & Valerie DeMarinis The Late Modern Hero’s Quest for Meaning – A case study on the psychological construction of meaning and play, ritualization, and, quests in video games in late modern Sweden. Fredrik Norman 850503-7534 [email protected] Abstract This essay focuses on two cases studies that include two game designers’ views of mean- ing-making construction in games and an analysis of their corresponding games. This is placed in relation to the late modern Sweden context. The study examines how the de- signers conceive purposeful play by employing a multi-disciplinary approach consisting of Pruyser’s three-world model, Bell’s ritualization framework, and, Howard’s quest the- ory. Such a study is relevant due to the new ways meaning-making is actively produced within games and contributes to the understanding of meaning-making in late modern Sweden. The two designers work at DICE and Starbreeze Studios and were interviewed using a semi-structured methodology. The data is analyzed with a qualitative narrative technique applying an inductive theoretical lens to analyze the data thematically. Both respondents illustrate patterns of meaning-making in their construction of games where functionality is central and vital to produce purposeful play. The construction of illusion- istic game worlds encloses on feelings of authenticity to the world’s structure. Realistic, autistic, and, object symbolism operate to mold the world structure and are connected to the designers’ genre. The designer from DICE promotes realistic worlds and the designer from Starbreeze Studios autistic representations.

  • Happy Birthday Sierra Chest!
The Sierra Chest Newsletter: Issue 5, October 2009 Happy birthday Sierra Chest! It’s amazing how fast time flies by. It seems as if the site was created only a few months ago. But no, the site went public on October 11th 2008. On the first anniversary of the Chest, I would like to take the opportunity to explain how things came to be, where they are now and what is to be expected from the Sierra Chest in years to come. Yes, one year passed by, but this is just the beginning and some special additions are planned. Although the forums of the Chest have been as good as non-active lately, the site itself and related sites have been booming. The visitor counter of the Chest is currently well above 33,000, the number of subscribers to the Sierra Chest Youtube Channel has finally hit triple digits and the Sierra Chest Facebook profile has attracted many new people, including more than 50 former Sierra employees. If you haven’t signed up yet, just search “Sierra Chest” on Facebook and add as a friend. To immediately be updated with the new videos, feel free to subscribe to the Sierra Chest Youtube channel. Also a guestbook has been added to the main menu for you to leave your impressions of the site, so you are welcome to sign it ;-). Of course more games have been inserted in detail and more are in development. Gold Rush has been added, as well as Space Quest 3, Johnny Castaway and the Colonel’s Bequest.
