INTRODUCTION The interest in the marine mollusc fauna of Madeira started, in the mid-19th century, with the first checklist published by Mac ANDREW (1854) reporting 125 species and continued over the next 50 years, resulting in publications by famous malacologists such as JEFFREYS (1867), MANZONI (1868) and of course, AUGUSTO NOBRE (1889, 1894, 1905) and the Rev. BOOG WATSON (1873, 1885, 1891, 1897). In his 1897 publication, his major work, Watson added the findings from the archipelago of the Selvagens to those from the archipelago of Madeira, most probably for political reasons, and ended up with a record of 382 species. In the following century, only NOBRE (1937) published a complete list using the same geographical boundaries as Watson, recording 405 species, and FRITZ NORDSIECK & FRANCISCO TALAVERA (1979) presented their work on the marine gastropods of the Canary Islands and Madeira, including the Selvagens, based on the records of TALAVERA (1978). Later authors such as J. Van Aartsen, R. Moolenbeek, S. Gofas, P. Bouchet and A. Warén, amongst others, brought a new influx of very valuable but scattered results from the findings of the CANCAP Expeditions (1975-1986) and the Seamount 1 & 2 Expeditions (1987- 1993). Although the study of material from these expeditions is still ongoing, those data which have been published gave a boost to the interest in the marine fauna of the north- eastern Atlantic and its archipelagos. These new data, together with new specimens from the SEPLAT Expedition (1992) in Madeira and the PSMAC Expedition (2000) in Porto Santo, complemented with recent collections made by the staff of the Museu Municipal do Funchal (História Natural), resulted in the idea to make an updated checklist of the marine malacological fauna of the archipelagos of Madeira and the Selvagens, following Watson and Nobre. While this idea was being developed, CERVERA et al. (2004) added a lot of information on the Opisthobranchiata from Portugal and Spain. The major goal of this work is not only to give a complete review of the species recorded from the area, but also to correct, as far as possible, the mistakes made in the past. In order to achieve this goal, the authors gathered a lot of literature on the subject and, in cooperation with the Malacological section of the Museu Municipal do Funchal (História Natural), Madeira, collected, sorted and identified a large amount of material from the above cited expeditions, from some other smaller expeditions and from some occasional dredging works. A minor amount of material was collected by divers in shallow water or on the 3 shore, or by snorkelling. All these findings were compared with material in collections from different museums, such as the Mac Andrew / Watson / Norman collections in London, the Melvill-Tomlin collection in Cardiff, the Nobre collection in Porto, the Nordsieck / Talavera collection in Tenerife and the Nordsieck collection in Frankfurt. Material from the CANCAP Expedition in Leiden / Amsterdam as well as from the TRAVAILLEUR & TALISMAN, PRINCE OF MONACO and ABYPLAINE expeditions in Paris, was also studied. This checklist has been updated up to the 31st of December 2008 and contains about 850 species. Some of these species could not be identified and are marked as “sp.”. All accepted taxa (about 750 species) are marked in bold. Doubtful or rejected records (about 100 species), are not marked in bold. The taxonomy adopted in the present checklist follows CLEMAM (Checklist of Recent European Marine Molluscs). 4 SYSTEMATICS Class MONOPLACOPHORA Genus Patella Linné,1758 Order MONOPLACOPHORIDA Patella candei candei d,Orbigny, 1840 Family NEOPILINIDAE Patella piperata Gould, 1846 Genus Veleropilina Starobogatov & Moskalev, Patella tenuis tenuis Gmelin, 1791 1987 Patella ulyssiponensis gmelin, 1791 Veleropilina zofragi (Dautzenberg & Fischer, Family ACMAEIDAE 1896) Genus Pectinodonta Dall,1882 Pectinodonta maxima Dautzenberg, 1925 Class POLYPLACOPHORA Family LEPETIDAE Gray,1850 Order LEPIDOPLEURIDA Genus Propilidium Forbes & Hanley,1849 Family LEPTOCHITONIDAE Propilidium exiguum (Thompson W.,1844) Genus Leptochiton Gray, 1847 Family LOTTHIDAE Leptochiton algesirensis (Capellini, 1859) Genus Tectura Gray, 1847 Leptochiton cancellatus (Sowerby G.B.H., Tectura virginea (Muller O.
