  • Does Race Matter in International Beauty Pageants? a Quantitative Analysis of Miss World B S Z R W , PD U B C
Does race matter in international beauty pageants? A quantitative analysis of Miss World B S Z R W, PD U B C Abstract: Most research on race and beauty pageants uses qualitative research methods and focuses on national beauty pageants. For this reason it is unclear whether there are broad patterns of racial inequalities in international beauty pageants. My study addresses this issue by using a quantitative approach to examine whether race affects success rates in international beauty pageants. This study examines countries that have competed in the Miss World pageant from 1951 to 2011 and examine each country’s probability of winning and being in the semi- fi nals. The analysis shows that race matters. White countries have a much higher chance of winning and being in the semi-fi nals than non-white nations. Furthermore, white nations have been over-represented as winners and semi-fi nalists while non-white nations have been under-represented in both those categories. The patterns of success for white nations and lack of success for non-white nations demonstrates that beauty is not neutral and that global beauty pageants can be seen as a refl ection of racial hierarchies and a reaffi rmation of the ideology of white beauty. Introduction Studying Race in Beauty Pageants than simple phenotypes, in beauty pageants Browsing through the headshots of the Although race is a socially constructed where the body is visually displayed, physical 2011 contestants on the websites of the Miss concept, the concept of race and racism appearance is a noticeable way of signifying World and the Miss Universe pageants, the persists3, and in order to study racial race.5 Moreover, the general public that view women’s beauty was indisputable.

Azra Akin, Agbani Darego, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Amina Nawal On November 17, 2001, 18-year-old Agbani Darego from Nigeria was crowned Miss World. The finals were hosted by Jerry Springer and took place in Sun City in the heart of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was guest of honor. This year, pride prevailed over the usual criticism (1) of the event as a bikini-parade: Darego was the first black African Miss World, a shining example to many girls and women all over Africa, for whom having a fair complexion was still the highest ideal in beauty (2). Darego, a resident of Southern Nigeria, made it specifically clear she's a Christian. Her very special thanks went out to “God, whom [she would] always remain grateful [to] for crowning [her] life with his love…” Nigeria, after having lurched from one military coup to another, had had an elected leadership since 1999, when Olusegun Obasanjo came to power. But the political liberalization ushered in by the return to civilian rule allowed militants from the many different ethnic and religious groups (3) to express their frustrations more freely, and with increasing violence. Since 1999 thousands of people had died in communal rivalry, and separatist aspirations among some groups started to grow. The gradual imposition of Islamic law, Shari'ah, in twelve of the impoverished, predominantly Islamic, northern states solidified divisions and caused thousands of Christians to flee to the south after more than 3,000 had died in bloody protest marches. The Shari'ah courts imposed strict punishments, including floggings and amputations for transgressions like theft (4) and adultery.

  • When Romantic Love Crosses Borders: the Case of Mixed- Nationality and Transnational Couples
When romantic love crosses borders: the case of mixed- nationality and transnational couples Başak JANOTA Erasmus Mundus Master‟s in Social Work with Families and Children Supervisor: Maria das Dores Guerreiro Co-supervisor: Ana Raquel Matias University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL), December 2017 Abstract Title: When romantic love crosses borders: the case of mixed-nationality and transnational couples Author: Başak JANOTA Key words: immigration, globalization, transnational couples, mixed-marriages, transnational families The analysis of mixed-nationality and transnational couples‟ portraits represented here aimed to explore their experiences and difficulties about adaptation to transnational arrangements, and how these experiences shape their spousal and familial dynamics over time and space. They were analysed by following the main research questions: a) In relation to transnational migration, what are the experiences of mixed-nationality and transnational couples?, b) What are the dynamics and characteristics of mixed-nationality and transnational couples‟ relationships and how do they change over time and space?, c) How transnational migration has influenced spousal and familial dynamics and future plans? These questions were conducted in a qualitative research on the basis of ethnography and semi-structured interviews. I found that their socio-demographic status of both members of the couples had an influence on reshaping family functions, gender relations and roles in both domestic and outside spheres. Their past trajectories reflected that they acknowledged their self, their partner and family members in cross-borders while experiencing a reformation about themselves and new forms of living with diversity. These couples created their own way of intimacy and privacy while reconsidering the globalized perspectives of loving, living, thinking, acting and interacting with their beloved ones through the lens of bi-nationalism and transnationalism.

  • Defamation and Insult Laws in the OSCE Region: a Comparative Study
Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe The Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatović Defamation and Insult Laws in the OSCE Region: A Comparative Study (Commissioned by the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media) March 2017 Author/Lead Researcher: Scott Griffen, Director of Press Freedom Programmes, International Press Institute Managing Editor: Barbara Trionfi, Executive Director, International Press Institute 1 About This Study This study examines the existence of criminal defamation and insult laws in the territory of the 57 participating States of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In doing so, it offers a broad, comparative overview of the compliance of OSCE participating States’ legislation with international standards and best practices in the field of defamation law and freedom of expression. The primary purpose of the study is to identify relevant provisions in law. Although the study does include examples of the usage of these provisions, it is not an analysis of legal practice. Where prudent, the study provides basic information about national courts’ interpretation of the law insofar as is necessary to understand the objective component of the provision. However, due to constraints of time and resources, the study does not delve into court standards on application in any great detail. The study is divided into two sections. The first section offers conclusions according to each of the principal categories researched and in reference to international standards on freedom of expression. The second section provides the detailed research findings for each country, including relevant examples. As the study’s title suggests, the primary research category is general criminal laws on defamation and insult.

  • The World's Largest Trade Fair African “Saloonists”
Disentangling Globalisation: Towards a feminist geography of hair and beauty Caroline Faria and Bisola Falola Revised and accepted for: Datta, A., Hopkins, P., Johnston, L., Olson, E., and Silva, JM. (eds) The Routledge International handbook of Gender and Feminist Geographies. Routledge: London. Introduction Each year in May, Dubai hosts Beautyworld Middle East, a trade fair bringing together 2000 exhibitors and 35000 producers, distributors and cosmetologists from over 60 countries. It is now the world’s largest trade fair for the hair and beauty industry. The lucrative markets of Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) partly explain its dramatic growth and success. Yet also increasingly attractive to Beautyworld visitors are the markets of East, West and Southern Africa and their cosmopolitan centers of Lagos and Accra, Nairobi and Kampala, Johannesburg and Cape Town. This success signals a growing desire for cosmopolitan beauty in these places, but one rooted in a history of colonial and postcolonial international exchange. Africans are not only positioned as consumers in these commodity circuits. African entrepreneurs extend the beauty trade onto and within the continent, with African “saloonists” adapting imported styles for their clients, and innovative manufacturers produce hair weaves, skin lotions, fragrances, and beauty technologies. Indeed, beauty is big business in the region, powerfully shaping and shaped by people and places. Beauty is also, necessarily then, deeply spatial. Its (im)material affects and objects, its ideologies, and its imagined and embodied forms are powerful in producing, connecting and transforming our world. And yet, curiously, very little geographic attention has been paid to beauty (but see Fluri 2009; Wrigley-Asante et al 2017).

  • The Making of Modern Turkey
The making of modern Turkey Turkey had the distinction of being the first modern, secular state in a predominantly Islamic Middle East. In this major new study, Feroz Ahmad traces the work of generations of reformers, contrasting the institution builders of the nineteenth century with their successors, the ‘Young Turks’, engineers of a new social order. Written at a time when the Turkish military has been playing a prominent political role, The Making of Modern Turkey challenges the conventional wisdom of a monolithic and unchanging army. After a chapter on the Ottoman legacy, the book covers the period since the revolution of 1908, examining the processes by which the new Turkey was formed. Successive chapters then chart progress through the single-party regime set up by Atatürk, the multi-party period (1945– 60) and the three military interventions of 1960, 1971 and 1980. In conclusion, the author examines the choices facing Turkey’s leaders today. In contrast to most recent writing, throughout his analysis, the author emphasises socio-economic changes rather than continuities as the motor of Turkish politics. Feroz Ahmad is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. He is the author of The Young Turks (1969) and The Turkish Experiment in Democracy 1950–75 (1977).
