It is a wonder to behold how a busy and hectic campus can become a quiet oasis within a matter of a few hours. This term, as our boys and girls have embarked on journeys to the far flung corners of the globe, we have quickly changed role to become hosts of the National Eton Fives Championships. Teams from across the country, together with international competitors from Switzerland and Malaysia, have been battling it out for national titles. Amongst them is a strong group of Salopians, who we anticipate will make it through to the final stages of the competition. Although the competition is very much ‘live’ as I write, I can congratulate Lizzie Ware and Sophia Breese on winning the U15 girls’ national title. We hope for more good news from the boys. In my end of term assembly, I spoke to the School about the philosophy of Kurt Hahn, one of the leading 20th century educationalists. Earlier in the term, I had the opportunity to spend a few days inspecting Gordonstoun School in Moray. As some of you will know, Gordonstoun was set up in 1934, by Kurt Hahn, on the model of Schule Schloss Salem, which had been founded several decades before, in Germany. As national socialism came to prominence with the rise of the Nazi Party, Kurt Hahn found that the ideals of his beloved school were not shared by the political agenda setters. -

Powell Title: Tolkien‟s The Silmarillion: A Reexamination of Providence Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Thomas Martin Degree Master of Arts Year 2009 Christian providence in the primary (real) world operates as the model for the spiritual movement of Eru/Illuvatar in Tolkien‟s secondary (imaginative) world. Paralleling the Christian God, Illuvatar maintains a relationship with his creation through a three-fold activity: preservation, concurrence, and government. Preservation affirms Eru‟s sovereignty as Creator, and concurrence guarantees creaturely freedom, while paradoxically, government controls, guides, and determines those wills in Time. The union of these three activities comprises the providential relationship of Illuvatar in Tolkien‟s imaginary world. The following thesis endeavors to carry the argument for providence into The Silmarillion with a declarative and analytical detail that distinguishes Illuvatar‟s providence from other temporal manifestations. The Lord of the Rings: the Tale of a Text by Pat Reynolds
The Tolkien Society – Essays www.tolkiensociety.org The Lord of the Rings: The Tale of a Text By Pat Reynolds This paper was first read at the launch of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of The Lord of the Rings, organized by the Società Tolkieniana Italiana at European Parliament, Rome, on Monday 19th January. My paper is very largely based on a 'Note on the Text' written by Douglas Anderson for the one- volume deluxe "collectors'" edition of The Lord of the Rings, published by the Houghton Mifflin Company in 1987 (pages v-viii), and on the detailed commentary by Wayne Hammond in J.R.R. Tolkien: A Descriptive Bibliography. The Tolkien Collector, published by Wayne Hammond and his wife, Christina Scull, has been used extensively for more recent changes. The Lord of the Rings is not a trilogy: by the time it was being prepared for publication in 1950, Tolkien was thinking of it as a duology: a book of two parts, the other being The Silmarillion - a work conceived of as being of equal size to The Lord of the Rings (Letter 126 to Milton Waldon, 10/3/1950). Already, by that time, the text had grown. In October 1937 Tolkien thought he had nothing more to say about hobbits, but by December 19th he had written the first chapter of The Lord of the Rings (Letter 17 to Stanley Unwin, 15/10/1937; Letter 20 to C.A. Furth, 19/12/1937). His subsequent letters are full of hopes that he will finish it off early next year (Letter 47 to Stanley Unwin, 7/12/1942) - 'next year', of course, always being 'next year'. -

WEEK OF 11.9.2020 DragonNEWS News and Events for Dragon Parents Welcome back Dragons! 1 Dear Parents elcome to the new academic year, and an especially warm Wwelcome to those parents who are new to the Dragon community. We are absolutely delighted to have the children back in school, and it is excellent to see the boys and girls so engaged in their work, enthusiastic in their play and really enjoying each other’s company. The term has got off to an impressive start and the children are settling well into their routines, whilst mastering the one-way systems, separate play areas, and new dining arrangements. We are very proud of how our young Dragons have adapted to all the measures that have necessarily been put in place to ensure a safe environment for us all at this time. We very much appreciate the support of parents during this challenging time and I should like to draw your attention to the separate notices regarding social distancing and winter illnesses/COVID 19. Last Saturday saw the launch of our long-awaited Dragon QUEST programme, and the inaugural Saturday morning was a resounding success. Around 88% of our young D and E Block Dragons participated on the first day. It was wonderful to see all the children enjoying a wide range of activities including visiting a working farm, paddle-boarding on the River Cherwell, a cultural tour of Oxford, bike mechanics, polo, 3D printing, film-making, and design and technology. Congratulations to our QUEST Director, Tim Knapp, who has worked tirelessly towards this launch, and I should also like to thank all the teachers who are involved in this varied programme. -

MEMBERSHIP The Old Edwardians' Association exists primarily to maintain touch between the School and Old Boys and contacts between Old Boys of different periods. This purpose is served mainly through Honorary Membership, which carries with it the right to wear Old Edwardians' colours and to receive twice a year the Old Edwardians' Gazette, with news of the School and of Old Edwardians. The Association exists in the second place—a function whose importance has increased now the School is no longer in New Street— to provide a centre for Old Edwardians. The aim of the Association is that Old Boys living in Birmingham or passing through Birmingham may be able to meet friends in the Club Rooms—which provide all the amenities of the Ordinary Social Club. To attain this end there must be a large Membership, apart from Honorary Membership, a membership of Old Boys using the Club Rooms. To secure this, the cost of full membership is carefully graduated.
