    SIAM'S POLITICAL FUTURE: DOCUMENTS FROM THE END OF THE ABSOLUTE MONARCHY THE CORNELL UNIVERSITY SOUTHEAST ASIA PROGRAM The Southeast Asia Program was organized at Cornell University in the Department of Far Eastern Studies in 1950. It is a teaching and research program of interdisciplinary studies in the hmnanities, social sciences, and some natural sciences. It deals with Southeast Asia as a region, and with the individual cowitries of the area: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. The activities of the program are carried on _both at Cornell and in Southeast Asia. They include an Wldergraduate and graduate curriculum at Cornell which provides instruction by specialists in Southeast Asian cultural history and present-day affairs and offers intensive training in each of the major languages of the area. The Program sponsors group research projects on Thailand, on Indonesia, on the Philippines, and on the area's Chinese minorities. At the same time, individual staff and students of the Program have done field research in every Southeast Asian country. A list of publications relating to Southeast Asia which may be obtained on prepaid order directly from the Program is given at the end of this volume.     PERFINS of Great Britain. King Edward VII King Edward VII Albert Edward was born on 9th November 1841, the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coberg and Gotha. His parents were keen to see that Edward had an education that would prepare him to be the very epitomy of a constitutional monarch. However, despite being given a rigorous educational programme, he did not excel in his studies. Edward was well travelled - he went to Rome in 1859, Canada and America in 1860, Germany in 1861, and after his father’s death in 1861, the Middle East, …, the list goes on and on! A natural consequence of having the longest reigning monarch as a mother, meant Edward, as heir presumptive, had to wait a long, long time before becoming king. On the death of Queen Victoria on 22nd January 1901, Edward became King of the United Kingdom, Emperor of India, and King of the British Dominions. He chose the regnal name Edward VII, instead of Albert Edward. However, the number VII was often omitted in Scotland, on the grounds that all previous Edwards were English kings who had ‘been excluded from Scotland by battle’. A similar situation exists today regarding Queen Elizabeth II, as Queen Elizabeth I was never Queen of Scotland. The image chosen to illustrate the King is the ‘Tyrian plum’ of 1910. The stamp printers, De La Rue, had already printed 100,000 sheets (24 million stamps) of this new stamp, but all had to be destroyed due to the death of the King on the 6th May 1910.

    Siam’s Old Singapore Ties Vitthya Vejjajiva Introduction This article is an abridged and edited version of a longer article that was prepared for a commemorative publication for the inauguration of the new premises of the Thai Embassy in Singapore.1 It is by no means meant as an academic article— indeed, although I use the word “old”, I am referring to the ties, not Singapore itself, which has had certain “connections” with Siam under King Ramkhamhaeng and down the ages—but has been prepared as a “reminder” of Singapore’s continuous and close association with the kings and people of Siam for well over a century. It was thus envisioned as a non-scholarly and basically descriptive article. That said, I hope to remind readers that the advent of “old” Singapore, dating from 1819, proved to be a momentous event for Siam, for it had the effect of changing the traditional pattern of Siam’s trade, henceforth to be characterized by the fast-growing junk trade between Chinese merchants in Siam and their counterparts in Singapore. I. First contact The first Siamese-Singapore direct contact occurred in April 1821, barely two years after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles. A mission led by John Morgan, an English merchant resident in Singapore, was entrusted with a letter addressed to the King of Siam, in which Colonel William Farquhar, Resident of Singapore, informed the King of the “new Establishment the British Government has formed here” and expressed the hope for future commercial ties.2 The emissary was generally well received in Bangkok.

The Bourbon restoration existed from (about) April 6th, 1814 until the popular uprisings of the July Revolution of 1830, excepting the interval of the "Hundred Days"[2] less than a full year into the restoration when the Bourbon monarchy again had made themselves so unpopular with the general population of France that the family had to once more flee Paris and France to Ghent ahead of exploding civil disorders and collapsing civil authority.

The lives of monarchs often are complicated by their political roles and greatly affected by tragedy, leading to compelling biographies. Russian history and the collapse of the Romanov house has interested me since middle school, likely due to my interest in the Slavic world due to my Czech and Polish heritage. As a political science major, international relations has been my main body of work, and I have long been interested in the collapse of the monarchy in favor of republican governance (or communism, in the case of the Soviet Union).
