LAMORINDA WEEKLY | 'Monkey Kingdom' Published April 22nd, 2015 'Monkey Kingdom' By Derek Zemrak "Monkey Kingdom" is the latest Disneynature film to be released around Earth Day, April 22. Previous Disneynature films include: "Bears" (2014), "Chimpanzee" (2012) and "African Cats" (2011). "Monkey Kingdom" is a fascinating look inside the social structure of the macaques in Sri Lanka. The documentary follows a newborn monkey, Kip, and his mother, Maya, as they struggle with their kingdom of the "haves and have-nots." You will learn their competitive social hierarchy is much like the world in which we (humans) live. Overall there is no "monkey business" with filmmakers Mark Linfield and Alastair Fothergill ("Chimpanzee") as they stay true to Disney's goal for capturing and educating audiences of all ages about the natural world and animal behavior. If you have never ventured out to see one of these beautiful nature films, "Monkey Kingdom" is a good one to start with. Tina Fey delivers an excellent Image provided narration, which is an added bonus. Showing at the Orinda and Rheem theatres, "Monkey Kingdom" is rated "G" and has a TRT (total running time) of 81 minutes. Come to learn as you enjoy the beautiful cinematography and the cuteness of the monkeys. Plus for the first week of the release, Disney will be donating a portion of the ticket sales to help preserve the monkey kingdom. Hugo van Lawick/National Geographic Creative Children under quarantine are enjoying an excess of “screen time,” if only to give their overtaxed parents a break. But there’s no reason they can’t learn a few things in the process. These nature documentaries have educational value for the whole family, while also offering a chance to experience the great outdoors from inside your living room.Being self-isolated makes one happy to have a project — plus, it would feel good to write something that might put a happy spin on this situation we are in, even if for just a few moments. ‘The Living Desert’ (1953) Disney’s True-Life Adventures series is a fascinating experiment in edu-tainment, an attempt to give nature footage the quality of a Disney animated film, with dramatic confrontations and silly little behavioral vignettes. There are more entertaining examples than “The Living Desert” — the 1957 gem “Perri,” about the plight of a female tree squirrel, is an ideal companion piece for “Bambi” — but it was the company’s first attempt at a feature-length documentary and established a formula that would be used decades down the line. Shot mostly in the Arizona desert, the film marvels over the animals that live in such an austere climate while also focusing on familiar scenarios, like two male tortoises tussling over a female or scorpions doing a mating dance to hoedown music.

A critical analysis of how the BBC marketed to attract viewers for Planet Earth II and how social media contributed to the campaign’s success. Ten years after the BBC’s Emmy award-winning nature documentary Planet Earth (2006, BBC) stunned audiences with high-definition views of animal habitats across the globe, a sequel promising ‘the most immersive wildlife documentary experience to date’ was announced (BBC Media Centre, 2016). Revealed on February 22, 2016, Planet Earth II (2016, BBC) is the latest instalment of the highly successful Planet Earth franchise that includes documentary series The Blue Planet (2001, BBC) and feature film Earth (2007, BBC Worldwide). The new series, set to premiere later in the year, consists of six episodes that each feature a specific habitat including grasslands, forests, mountains and cities. Shot over four years, it utilises the latest camera and drone technology and is the first nature documentary to be filmed in ultra high-definition (4K). With never-before-seen footage and the return of well-respected presenter David Attenborough, Planet Earth II features all the elements necessary for high ratings; however, in a digital generation where primetime television is becoming less relevant, a strong marketing campaign was imperative to ensure success. Leo Birch, BBC strategist responsible for marketing the series, admitted in a telephone interview that primetime television is becoming increasingly harder to market, however the key to success is to plan a campaign suitable for the future (Birch 2017). By spreading content via various social media channels including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the BBC took advantage of new technologies to bring traditional television into the digital generation.

African Big Cats Encounter ABOUT The project is home to the “big cats” such as lions, cheetahs, tigers, leopards, jaguars, pumas, caracal, serval cats and other wildlife species such as zebra, wild dog, springbok, honey badgers and raccoons. The sanctuary provides these predatory cats and wild animals that live there with a stable environment. The care they receive at this sanctuary exceeds the requirements of animal welfare regulations. Most importantly, the sanctuary is a place where animals are rehabilitated both physically and emotionally. For a visitor to the reservation, the visit is not just about viewing predator cats - it is also an informative experience. Experienced and trained guides provide tours of the sanctuary and introduce visitors to all the sanctuary inhabitants. A true sanctuary for big cats and other wildlife is more than just a place of refuge to protect them from the hunting or the petting trade. Importantly, therefore, the project has secured the future of all its predator cats and wildlife. It is self-funded by means of responsible eco-tourism and they strive to achieve an effective balance between conservation and economic sustainability. The focus is on conservation education and specifically the plight of large predators in captivity, not only in South Africa but all over the world. Big cats are extraordinary animals with a dangerous beauty that is both awe inspiring and fearsome because of their power and ability to kill. Sadly, at many wildlife facilities various animals, and especially large predatory species, are kept as a way of attracting visitors, without regard for the animals’ physical and emotional needs.
