Corn has been a cultural emblem and key component to the country’s national identity that throughout the twentieth-century the Mexican government embraced. However, since the adoption of neoliberal economic policies, which by necessity involves particular political policies, many Mexicans feel that corn’s significance in the country has changed. Over the last three decades public discontent with corn policies, which the public translates as anti-neoliberalism policies, has gradually grown. This thesis chronicles the growing discontent over corn policies and, more importantly, demonstrates how Mexican people have evolved to become agents for recentralizing corn in the country’s political, economic, and cultural discourses. iii This thesis is dedicated to Precious Vida Yamaguchi and Sonya JoJo Caire for their overwhelming support and tolerating my anxiety I had throughout writing this thesis. Sánchez Ruiz Dr. Oscar Terrazas Revilla México DF Febrero 2014 1 Resumen La Colonia Lomas de Chapultepec toma su traza actual a partir de los años cuarenta. Los fraccionadores iniciaron la venta de lotes a principios de 1922 trazando el proyecto del Arquitecto José Luis Cuevas Pietrasanta conforme iban vendiendo lotes. En los primeros cinco años su desarrollo fue rápido deteniendo su ritmo al inicio de los años treinta. En los primeros años de los cuarenta tuvo un gran impulso terminándose de urbanizar antes de acabar la década. Esta investigación da cuenta de las características de este último proceso y de lo sucedido a partir de ello hasta el presente. A la fecha la colonia conserva muchas de sus cualidades planteadas en el proyecto inicial, motivo por el cual con frecuencia se menciona que debería estar inscrita para su conservación por su valor Patrimonial. Aunque en el camino la traza ha sufrido cambios, pocas veces se da cuenta de ello así como de la particularidad del proceso del diseño del Arquitecto Cuevas y los valores que lo acreditan como una realización verdaderamente importante innovadora en su tiempo. El crecimiento de la ciudad ha absorbido el fraccionamiento terminando su condición de colonia aislada de la mancha urbana y el desarrollo inmobiliario hacia el poniente, le ha impuesto presiones de vialidad y de valor del suelo que la están forzando a cambios que hace difícil prever por cuanto tiempo perdurará.

Rebuilding the Patria through Conservation: Revolution and Recovering the Public Good Autumn Quezada-Grant Roger Williams University Revolutionary Parks uncovers an important and forgotten moment in Mexican environmental history encompassing the first half of the twentieth-century. Linking seemingly incongruent discussions of conservation to the revolutionary processes of the Mexican Revolution, Emily Wakild offers readers an impressive work of great interpretation and significance opening us to a history of how national park creation became intertwined with the re-establishment of the Mexican national state Quezada-Grant 522 following the violence of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1917). Using the lens of environmental history, Revolutionary Parks is a significant work in that it challenges the belief by historians that Latin Americans had little concern for conservation. 1 Efforts towards conservation actually began during the Porfiriato as foresters in Mexico (as científicos) hoped to create and conserve parks. Scientific reasoning, however, mattered little to the masses making it difficult for those impassioned souls to connect conservation with public good (96). The Mexican Revolution then offered a language through which proponents of environmentalism could connect social justice, national patrimony with the conservation of the landscape. Wakild explores environmental history to examine the period covering the administration of Venustiano Carranza (1914-1920) and the presidency of Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-1940). In this revolutionary moment, the author finds what she terms ‘revolutionary conservation.’ Utilizing recent teachings on social justice, the author uncovers a history connecting the Revolution from below to land and top-down implementation of the Revolution.

San Miguel Chapultepec, Miguel Hidalgo, México DF 11850 [email protected] TRADE UNION RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN MEXICO Dear Mr. President, On the occasion of your recent inauguration as President of Mexico, labour rights organizations from around the world join together to urge you to make every effort to resolve the systematic violations of workers’ rights across all industrial sectors and regions of Mexico. From 18 to 24 February 2013 activists from around the world, shocked by the systematic attacks on trade union rights and the increasing criminalization of all union and civil protest in Mexico, will mobilize for trade union rights in Mexico and meet with Mexican embassies and consulates around the globe to demand justice. Tuesday 19 February marks the anniversary of the terrible Pasta de Conchos mine disaster in 2006 that killed 65 miners. The refusal of the Mexican government and employer Grupo Mexico to recover the bodies of 63 miners who remain entombed is widely suspected to be an effort to cover up the real causes of this “industrial homicide” and the inadequacy of rescue efforts. The families of the 65 miners that died are calling for access to the mine and a Christian burial of the 63 miners that remain and adequate compensation, including wages until properly buried and full scholarships for orphaned children. Felipe Calderón has left behind a legacy of major unresolved labour disputes, persecution of democratic trade unionism, and the decomposition of labour relations generating an entrenched system of protection contracts that do not represent workers’ true interests.
