FIRST GRADE COLLEGE, KOTA-PADUKARE Page 1 SELFSTUDY REPORT FOR I CYCLE NAAC ACCREDITATION PREFACE Udupi is popularly known as temple of Karnataka, is also famous for education, banking sector, Hospitality industry and Health care center, The district is famous for medical college, engineering colleges and other basic degree educational institutions of professional and academic excellence. It hasa state of art Medical College situated in Manipal under the name Kasturba Medical College. It district is located in Konkan Coast surrounded by Arabian sea.Kota, being a small town in the district of Udupi is well known for the living legend and Janapeeta awardee Dr K.Shivarama Karanth.Laxmi Soma BangeraGovernment First Grade College,Kota Padukare was established byGovernment of Karnatakathrough the Department Of Collegiate Education in the year 2007. Government First Grade College, Kota Padukere (here after referred as LSBGFGC ) started functioning in 2007 in a primary and high school premises of Government Composite high school,Manuru.Later a temporary building structure was constructed under the leadership of dynamic and prestigious entrepreneur Mr. Anand.C. Kundar,very next to the high school premises.During 2011-2012 under the leadership of Dr.Nadoja G. Shanka,who donated the land and a newbuilding was constructed in Padukare village.The present land consists of 3.48acares which was water logged during rainy season and a constant effort has made to fill land withadequate soil and madesuitable for construction of building.As there was a need for additional classrooms due to additional intake of students, again Mr. Anand C Kunder took the responsibility of constructing temporary classrooms to provide proper accommodation to the studentscommunity. This college is located away from city and traffic congestion and college premises is Quiet and Calm area surrounded by lush green coconut groves around the college with other natural habitations and thus creates a most appropriate academic environment for overall development of the students. Students are less disturbed by outside forces. This can be proved out of their campus discipline and good academic results and achievement with large number of first classes and distinctions. Thecollege caters to the needs of the poor students, who mainly come from fisherman community (Mogaveera) and Billava Community and other backward castes of rural areas. The first batch has 70 students with only BA and BBM degree courses. Later in the year 2008-2009 the B.com and BSW degree courses were introduced. During 2008, the students strength has increased to 206. At present the students strength is 648out of which are 236 LSBGOVT. The college has a greater responsibility to educate them and make them as a humble citizen. The Courses offered in the college are BA, B.Com, BSW and BBM. The performance of the students is at the best both curricular and in Co-Curricular. Now the college is headed under the leadership Dr. Rajendra S Nayak the principal and the committed team of dedicated staff, who devote most of their time and energy to achieve overall excellence among students both academically and in Co-Curricular activity Both teaching and non-teaching staff work very sincerely for the development of the college. The College is adjudged as one of the best college in this locality for discipline and thus attracts students even from far areas like Koteshwara, VandseNavunda Etc. Whatever may be, but an Institution must stand for its long term service to the community. It is worthwhile to remembers the president of the college and the local MLA Mr. HaladySrinivasShetty who is always supportive to the college activities and keeps a vigil on the functioning of college. Educational Institutions can achieve excellence only when it adopts and cultivate discipline in the system. The Principal along with team of discipline committee made a sincere effort in maintain discipline in the college campus. The Discipline committee insists the students in proper wearing of uniform along with identity cards. Use of mobile phone is prohibited and surprise check is done to control the use of mobile phone inside the campus. Economically backward students are supported through financial assistance from social welfare departments through scholarships. It is commendable to recognize the services of Mr. Anand C Kunder, Dr. G. Shankar, G. Gangamma Trust who offered financial support in the form of fee reimbursement, Provision of note books to the students. Services of Mr. B. Shivakumar, Mr.Prashant and Mr. Raghavendra isapplaud able in this regard. The College has an academic calendar which is adopted since inception 2007. The students representatives to students council is selected on the basis of merit and top scorers in university exam as President, Vice-president, Secretary and Joint Secretary and other students representatives of various association. Even the class representatives are selected on the basis of merit. The students council under the leadership of students welfare officer conducts various programs for moulding and shaping of students both in academic and co-curricular aspects LSBGOVT. This programmes are conducted by a team of trained experts appointed by higher education Department programmes like “Sahayoga”, “Vikasana”, “Manavathe” and “Angla” add on courses were conducted to first ,second and final year degree students. Cultural Club The college cultural club under the leadership of Mr. Krishnamurthy Y.R and able guidance of Mr. Krishna, Librarian the students are trained and the cultural teams has won various inter collegiate University level competitions. Final year students organize a unique and theme oriented inter-college university level cultural competitions Called “Aroha” NSS Units The College has two NSS Units under the leadership of Mr. Manjunath and Mr. Raviprasad, NSS Programme officers. The NSS units besides undertaking regular activities in the college campus it also taken up various extention activities like Beach cleaning in association with FSL India (An International NGO) Plantation work, Blood Donation Camps, Annual Special Camps, Awareness on Road Safety, Awareness on Right to Cast Votes, HIV And AIDS awareness and so on. NSS unit also organisednational integrated camp. Rangers And Rovers College has one unit each of Rangers and Rovers. The Rangers unit is headed by Mrs. Varija and Rovers by Mr. Manoj Kumar. The Rangers and Rovers has organised university level youth camp in which 190 students participated from various colleges Youth Red-Cross Unit Youth Red Cross unit is headed by Mr. B. Shivakumar. The unit is active and Conducted awareness and free Dental Checkup camp and blood group identification camp in association with Manipal University AndKusturba Medical College Sports Club College Sports clubs under the leadership of MrManoj Kumar and MrSatish Kumar K, trained the students in sports and games event like Kabbadi, Volley ball, Badminton and LSBGOVT. Students have won the runners-up place in Ball-Badminton match and MrShivarajhas won medal in wrestling competition at University level.
