It’s Summer… Is Your Car Safe to Drive? by Jim Winter Summer is here and that means it’s time for vacations, cookouts and summer road trips. Before you jump into the family vehicle, have you done everything you could to ensure safe travels? If not, you may want to think twice about driving “Old Faithful” across the country or across town to a BBQ. We all know with summer comes extreme heat, which can wreak havoc on a car. However, there are a few things you can do to ensure you keep your car in its best operating condition. • Get your oil changed. The Declaration of Three Fishermen Independence a Painting by David F. McKell by Sigmund Weiss

Two hundred and thirty five years ago Three fishermen sit in a boat, midstream, In the “City of Brotherly love”, lines dangling in water and wind. Our national founders all came together, Three fishermen talk, drink cans of beer As decreed by the good lord above! while fishing-lines play hide and seek, and fishes sleep, perhaps in thought They were all from different backgrounds, of a pleasant touch of sun, But their common purpose broke down this fence, where high above clouds tiptoe, Whether rich or poor, privileged or common, catch this day as dream, Their hope and desire was for independence. and in-between a bevy of birds alight upon the waves, stay immobile They struggled quite hard that hot summer as if in painting done. To create a mutual meeting ground. Three boisterous men talk and drink, Which has proven to be right up to this day, laugh with their hearts’ content. The best blueprint of good government ever found! Three fishing-lines glisten, sway, idle, gay in this light of day. It’s called the “Declaration of Independence”, Which we celebrate on July 4th each year. And it spelled out a “Master Plan” of freedom, JJJJJJJJJJ For all people both worldwide and here. History It states that “all men are created equal” by John Taratunio And their elected officials must have their consent, Fairfield Condos To enact any laws in their community, Or the people will vote for a new government. One if by land Two if by sea Thomas Jefferson was the author of this document, Was a simple formula Which was written after the Revolution began. For liberty. With the British Army, known as the “Red Coats” And the Americans, seeking independence, That simple code known as the “Minute Men”. Was no mystery But it played an important part The Americans fought the British with great valor, In American history. By using unorthodox methods of war. In reality, they fought like guerillas, At that time our forefathers Which increased their power, (i.e., one=four). Fought our very first war So America would be free As the battles proceeded towards victory, Forever more. The Congress declared independence from the Crown. From that our country There were fifty six signers of the Declaration, grew and grew Who unified to put King george III down. Into the greatest force The world ever knew. These timeless words about equality and government, Continue to inspire other countries to see the same. But with all the wars And as thankful Americans we should always revere, That were fought before The sacrifice and dedication of these men of fame! It’s inevitable there Will always be more.

the We CaRe PRoGRam , in which the st. James VFW Post 395 pays the postage for packages and mail to the troops fighting overseas, has been an unqualified success. An average of 33 packages per month have been sent to our military by families and friends, and also by special arrangement from groups such as schools, catechism classes and scout troops. If you know of a soldier who is not getting any mail, do a good deed. Let us know and we will make sure that individual doesn’t go empty-handed at mail call. A card or a letter goes a long way to boosting morale. For additional information contact the Post at 862-7965.
