he words “art auction” may bring several different artists to Tmind—Monet, daVinci, or Picasso, to name a few. None o f these artists, however, will be at the Friends of Art auction Friday. Instead, the Friends of Art, gives students and faculty the chance to get their works and names known while bringing in money for the campus. This Friday, the event starts off with a preview at 6 p.m. at the Sunset Hills Country Club in Edwardsville, followed closely at 7 p.m by an auction of all the works . Since 1977, Friends of Art has joined with the SIUE Department of Art and Design to stage this highly successful fund-raiser. All of the proceeds raised by the auction go directly to the department to enhance art education. Art History' Professor Pamela DeCoteau said the FOA uses the auction’s revenue to help fulfill requests by SIUE faculty and students. “Faculty members and student groups within the department put in requests for visiting artists, traveling conferences, art workshops, and books,” DeCoteau said. “The Friends o f Art sit down after the auction, look at the requests, and try to make the money stretch as far as possible to meet those requests.” The money also is used for art scholarships and awards students in various high school shows and exhibits. “I really enjoy doing these kinds of projects, getting to know the people.” - Jane Floyd-Hendey, Director of Disability Services and photographer

Because all of the works are donated by faculty, students, visiting artists and alumni, more profit is generated, which is why the contributions of faculty and students are such a vital part of the auction. Director of Disability Services Jane Floyd-Hendey, a former president o f FOA, donated four photographs to this year’s auction. “I make it a point to donate each year,” Floyd-Hendey said. Floyd-Hendey, an avid photographer, has thousands of photographs from which to choose her donations. About a hundred people observed several of her photos last Wednesday in an exhibition titled, “H ow I Spent my Summer Vacation: A Visual Diary of Jamie Currier's Journey with Cancer.” This exhibition is just one of several major photography projects by Floyd-Hendey.
