We believe that aesthetic education through instrumental music performance is essential to the school curriculum. Our mission is to provide educational leadership to the membership of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. To fulfill our mission, we provide opportunities for professional growth through developmental resources. These resources include: conferences, clinics, publications, performance evaluation, association with institutions of higher learning and interaction with professional musicians.

We provide enrichment opportunities which present outstanding student musicians as models for all instrumental programs. We also provide resources to assist with the development and/or evaluation of curriculum should it be requested by a school or district.

• SCSBOA sponsors band, orchestra, solo and ensemble, district and regional festivals.

• We select and train approved adjudicators for band, orchestra, solo and ensemble festivals and for parade and field event competitions.

• SCSBOA maintains a continuing program to evaluate and update the adjudication forms being used for band and orchestra festivals and competitions.

• We sponsor clinics and workshops for in-service training of teachers of instrumental music.

• SCSBOA sponsors the SCSBOA High School Honor Groups, the SCSBOA Middle School Honor Groups, the SCSBOA Elementary Honor Groups, and the SCSBOA Honor Jazz Ensembles. 1937 1937…the first Social Security payments in the U.S. were issued; Daffy Duck made his debut; U.S. steel workers were given a raise to $5 per day; NBC created the first full-size symphony orchestra for radio audiences; Joe Dimaggio hit his first grand slam. America continued to reel from the effects of the Great Depression, and the Dust Bowls of the Great Plains forced thousands of families to seek shelter and work far from their homesteads and families. Yet, on the campus of Los Angeles Junior College, fifteen music educators came together to create what would become the premiere music organization in California, the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. As a member of the SCSBOA, you are a recipient of their dream!

The first honor band was created in 1937, made up of high school students from Southern California and within a year, solo and ensemble festivals as well as band and orchestra festivals became the priority of the SCSBOA’s Board of Directors. Their vision was clear: creating a viable list of music to be used for festival and sightreading; developing a qualified judging pool; determining which grade levels would be eligible for festival participation. By the end of 1939, these visions were in fact realities and again, the Board of Directors, along with a growing membership pushed forward with new goals.

The Board of Directors introduced the first Southern California high school honor orchestra concert broadcast on nationwide radio and a “Three-Month Plan” where elementary, junior high and high school music education was the focus, culminating in a conference type meeting held every three months for specific grade levels. The Board of Directors continued to push forward with new ideas and dreams never accepting that the job was complete.

While the marching band movement has gained tremendous popularity, festivals continue to grow as well. Major changes to the by-laws have been instituted throughout the past eighty years. New scoring systems have been introduced and coordinators hired to assist with the ever-growing needs of the SCSBOA. These changes have kept the SCSBOA in existence for over eighty years. We keep growing and moving forward!

Little could the original fifteen gentlemen of the first SCSBOA have known that eighty one years later, music and its educational components encompass far more than band and orchestra, drums and violins. From garage bands to computerized and technologically oriented compositions, music and all its facets have evolved tremendously.

Yet, it’s not so much about the parades, field events or festivals, but more about the journey the SCSBOA continues to take because of the vision. Each generation, Board of Directors and Music Educator brings a new energy and goals to those dreams from 1937. That energy has made the SCSBOA the standard bearer not only in Southern California but nationwide. Be part of the vision – you matter. Be part of the legacy of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association! PROUD SPONSOR OF THE 2018 SCSBOA CONVENTION

INSTRUMENTS | LESSONS | RENTALS | REPAIRS MUSICARTS.COM Greetings from President, Albert Jeung

Welcome to our Association’s 2018 Conference!

Since 1937, the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association has been promoting and supporting music students and educators. As our vision statement indicates, we believe that aesthetic education through instrumental music performance is essential to the school curriculum. Our vision is to provide educational leadership to the membership of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. I am proud to say that we continue to do what the SCSBOA set out to do 81 years ago.

The SCSBOA originated as a way for local Los Angeles music educators to come together and discuss ways to improve classroom instruction. Today our Association has over thirteen hundred members and offers professional development plus performances for students in the area of festivals, parades, tournaments and honor groups. The influence of the SCSBOA can be seen in countless music rooms throughout Southern California and beyond.

Your presence today makes you part of our history and the proud tradition that is the SCSBOA. We invite you to embrace and continue to support our organization and its mission to ensure that we continue to enrich the cultural environment by helping all students develop a greater appreciation of music.

A special thank you to NAMM, Yamaha, Make Music, Music & Arts, the Hyatt Regency Orange County, and our vendors for being the presenting sponsors at this year’s conference.

I am sure many of you believe as I do that we are living the dream as music educators. It is said that if you love your work, you will never work a day in your life. I am not so sure about that, but I do know that there is no place I would rather be than here today with you, the people that do what I do and understand all we do and sacrifice to enrich people’s lives each and every day.

Cherish this gathering together, take home inspirational ideals, and strive to make each day the best teaching day of your life. Board of Directors SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BAND & ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION

Michele Hover 714-856-7275 www.jandjezfundraisers.com OC Hyatt, Garden Grove Conference Rooms Conference Rooms Keynote Address Friday, January 26, 2018 Doc Severinsen Grand Ballroom 5:40 p.m. Heeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in, followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of television for three decades. The ‘Johnny’ was , the announcer was Ed McMahon and the bandleader was Doc Severinsen. Beginning in October 1962, with Johnny Carson ruled the night air for thirty years. On May 22, 1992, it came to an end… Within a week of the final telecast, Doc Severinsen and His Big Band were on the road, and to this day, audiences across America love and respect Doc and his big band, not just because he shared their living room with them for so many years, but because of Doc’s love of the Big Band repertoire. His musicianship keeps this iconic American music fresh to this day. Their repertoire includes Ellington and Basie standards, pop, jazz, ballads, big band classics and, of course, The Tonight Show theme. Severinsen can still blow hard with his horn, and hit the high notes, a result of his continued commitment to the practice studio and the refinement of his craft. But as a band leader, Doc continues to surround himself with the best in the business, and he’s only too happy to give them a turn in the spotlight. A Grammy award winner, Doc has made more than 30 albums–from big band to jazz-fusion to classical. Two critically acclaimed Telarc CDs with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra showcase his multifaceted talents from Bach to ballads. The Very Best of Doc Severinsen reprises fifteen of Doc’s signature pieces. His other recordings include Unforgettably Doc with the Cincinnati Pops on Telarc, and the Grammy nominated Once More With Feeling on Amherst. He received a Grammy Award for “Best Jazz instrumental Performance – Big Band” for his recording of Doc Severinsen and -Volume I. Severinsen’s accomplishments began in his hometown of Arlington, Oregon, population: 600. Carl H Severinsen was born on July 7th, 1927, and was nicknamed “Little Doc” after his father, Dr. Carl Severinsen a dentist. Little Doc had originally wanted to play the trombone. But Doc Sr., a gifted amateur violinist, urged him to follow in his father’s footsteps. The Doc Jr. insisted on the trombone, which turned out to be unavailable in tiny Arlington’s music store. And so, a trumpet it would be. A week later, with the help of his father and a manual of instructions, the seven-year-old was so good that he was invited to join the high school band. At the age of twelve, Little Doc won the Music Educator’s National Contest and, while still in high school, was hired to go on the road with the famous Ted Fio Rito Orchestra. However, his stay with the group was cut short by the draft. He served in the Army during World War II and following his discharge, landed a spot with the Charlie Barnett Band. When this band broke up, Severinsen toured with the Tommy Dorsey, then, the Benny Goodman bands in the late 40’s. After his days with Barnett and Dorsey, Doc arrived in New York City in 1949 to become a staff musician for NBC. After years of playing with NBC’s many studio bands, Doc was invited to play a gig in the highly respected Tonight Show Band. The band leader at the time, , asked him to join that band in 1962 in the first trumpet chair. Five years later, Doc became the Music Director for The Tonight Show and the rest is history. His loyalty to Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon never faltered, and the warm camaraderie between the three was an enormous part of the show’s success. When Johnny decided to retire from The Tonight Show, Doc and Ed said their goodbyes as well. Of course, free from the nightly grind of the TV studio, Doc Severinsen had far more time to expand his musical horizons and continues to keep an extensive touring schedule. In addition to his San Miguel 5 appearances, Doc tours regularly with his own Big Band and continues to perform with symphony orchestras all over the country. Over the years has been Principal Pops Conductor with the Phoenix Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Colorado Symphony, the Pacific Symphony and the Buffalo Philharmonic. Today, Doc has not lost his flair for the outrageous fashion statement or his trademark wit. But his gregarious nature has never interfered with the fact that he has been one of the greatest trumpeters and musicians of the last 60 years, respected in the worlds of classical music, jazz, big band, and now even world music. In the end, Doc Severinsen has transcended his celebrity, and rejoiced in his remarkable ability to simply play his trumpet as well as he can. Which has proven to be good enough for the millions of people who count themselves his fans. Lunchtime Entertainment Saturday, January 27, 2018 Jacob Szekely Trio, Royal Ballroom 11:45 a.m. Jacob Szekely (cello) Born in Brooklyn New York in 1979, Jacob grew up in a musical family where his talent was recognized early on. Jacob discovered Jazz when he was accepted to study classical cello performance at the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy, and thereafter began leading a musical double life with traditional classical performance and developing a completely new language on his instrument. By the time Jacob arrived in Los Angeles for his masters degree at USC, he had already launched headlong into his professional career. In 2004, Jacob formed the indie jazz string quartet Supernova with fellow creative string wizard Miguel Attwood-Ferguson on viola. With the addition of Robert Anderson and Ludvig Girdland on violin the group emerged as a dynamic force on the LA music scene and in the creative string world in general. The group which was hailed by Turtle Island string quartet member Danny Seidenberg as “The evolution of the string quartet” disbanded when violinist Ludvig Girdland was permanently injured in a car accident. In 2006, Jacob formed the electric fusion based Eartha Austria Trio as well as teaming up with percussion master Chris Garcia (Grande Mothers of Invention, Michael Manring Trio) in the world/Jazz/chamber group Quarteto Nuevo which was hailed by the LA times for its “highly motivated performances and exceptional virtuosity.” Currently, Jacob is working with his new trio; a flexible, electric, groove based ensemble featuring pianist Josh Nelson on keyboards and drummer Christopher Allis. The group will be recording their debut album in November. In addition to his busy schedule as a studio musician, Jacob performs regularly as a sideman with numerous bands and singer songwriters in LA including the acoustic rock band Uncle Daddy. Szekely is also active as a composer and arranger and has collaborated with a wide range of artists and ensembles from string quartets and world music groups to commissions for chamber orchestra and children’s choir. In 2007, Jacob expanded his role as musical ambassador through the co founding and artistic directorship of String Project Los Angeles, a music school and resource for the alternative string playing community throughout the world located in Venice California. With its innovative curriculum and workshops featuring a veritable who’s who of the alternative string world, String Project LA was named “One of the top reasons to study music in Los Angeles” by Strings Magazine. In addition to String Project Los Angeles, Jacob has also conducted residencies and master classes across the at UCLA, Cal Arts, The Berklee School of Music, Oklahoma State University, Ithaca College and The American String Teachers Association’s national conference to name a few. Jacob has also served on the summer faculty of numerous summer festivals including The New Directions In Cello Festival and Christian Howes’ Creative Strings Workshop with whom he co authored an article in the July 2012 issue of The Strad advising string teachers on how to approach improvisation. In 2012, Jacob launched The Improvisor’s Guide to the cello… The first ever comprehensive video learning series designed to address the unique challenges classically trained cellists face when approaching creative string playing
