Coleman, IV All rights reserved Abstract Making the State on the Sino-Tibetan Frontier: Chinese Expansion and Local Power in Batang, 1842-1939 William M. Coleman, IV This dissertation analyzes the process of state building by Qing imperial representatives and Republican state officials in Batang, a predominantly ethnic Tibetan region located in southwestern Sichuan Province. Utilizing Chinese provincial and national level archival materials and Tibetan language works, as well as French and American missionary records and publications, it explores how Chinese state expansion evolved in response to local power and has three primary arguments. First, by the mid-nineteenth century, Batang had developed an identifiable structure of local governance in which native chieftains, monastic leaders, and imperial officials shared power and successfully fostered peace in the region for over a century. Second, the arrival of French missionaries in Batang precipitated a gradual expansion of imperial authority in the region, culminating in radical Qing military intervention that permanently altered local understandings of power. While short-lived, centrally-mandated reforms initiated soon thereafter further integrated Batang into the Qing Empire, thereby

‘A Mind to Copy’: Inspired by Meissen Anton Gabszewicz Independent Ceramic Historian, London Figure 1. Sir Charles Hanbury Williams by John Giles Eccardt. 1746 (National Portrait Gallery, London.) 20 he association between Nicholas Sprimont, part owner of the Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory, Sir Everard Fawkener, private sec- retary to William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland, the second son of King George II, and Sir Charles Hanbury Williams, diplomat and Tsometime British Envoy to the Saxon Court at Dresden was one that had far-reaching effects on the development and history of the ceramic industry in England. The well-known and oft cited letter of 9th June 1751 from Han- bury Williams (fig. 1) to his friend Henry Fox at Holland House, Kensington, where his china was stored, sets the scene. Fawkener had asked Hanbury Williams ‘…to send over models for different Pieces from hence, in order to furnish the Undertakers with good designs... But I thought it better and cheaper for the manufacturers to give them leave to take away any of my china from Holland House, and to copy what they like.’ Thus allowing Fawkener ‘… and anybody He brings with him, to see my China & to take away such pieces as they have a mind to Copy.’ The result of this exchange of correspondence and Hanbury Williams’ generous offer led to an almost instant influx of Meissen designs at Chelsea, a tremendous impetus to the nascent porcelain industry that was to influ- ence the course of events across the industry in England. • The Jesuit Role As “Experts” in High Qing Cartography and Technology∗
臺大歷史學報第31期 BIBLID1012-8514(2003)31p.223-250 2003年6月,頁223~250 2003.1.7收稿,2003.5.29通過刊登 The Jesuit Role as “Experts” in High Qing Cartography and Technology∗ Benjamin A. Elman∗∗ Abstract Earlier accounts have generally overvalued or undervalued the role of the Jesu- its in Ming-Qing intellectual life. In many cases the Jesuits were less relevant in the ongoing changes occurring in literati learning. In the medical field, for example, before the nineteenth century few Qing physicians (ruyi 儒醫) took early modern European “Galenic” medicine seriously as a threat to native remedies. On the other hand, the Kangxi revival of interest in mathematics was closely tied to the introduc- tion of Jesuit algebra (jiegen fang 借根方), trigonometry (sanjiao xue 三角學), and logarithyms (duishu 對數). In the midst of the relatively “closed door” policies of the Yongzheng emperor and his successors, a large-scale effort to recover and col- late the treasures of ancient Chinese mathematics were prioritized in the late eight- eenth and early nineteenth century. Despite setbacks during the early eighteenth century Rites Controversy, the Jesuits in China remained important “experts” (專家) in the Astro-Calendric Bureau (欽天監) and supervisors in the Qing dynasty’s imperial workshops. Earlier Adam Schall (1592-1666) and Ferdinand Verbiest (1623-1688) had not only championed the role of mathematics in Christianizing literati elites, but they also produced in- struments and weapons at the behest of both the Ming and Qing dynasties. The tech- nical expertise of the Jesuits in the China mission during the eighteenth century also ranged from translating Western texts and maps, introducing surveying methods to producing cannon, pulley systems, sundials, telescopes, water-pumps, musical in- struments, clocks, and other mechanical devices.

The historical era of the Caribbean has seen the decline and introduction of various different and opposing cultures. Because of this, the cultural landscape of the Caribbean today is one of the most diverse in the world. However, some of these cultures have been more extensively explored archaeologically than others. A few of the areas of study that have begun to receive more attention in recent years are contact era interaction, indentured labor populations, historical environment and landscape, re-excavation of colonial sites with new discoveries and interpretations, and other aspects of daily life in the colonial Caribbean. This symposium seeks to explore new areas of overlooked peoples, cultures, and activities that have

The Concept of the Five Famous Wares of the Song Dynasty —A Modern Invention Sabrina Rastelli Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Venice, Italy Abstract The concept of the five famous wares of the Song dynasty is a fundamental theory that has influenced both researching and learning about Chinese ceramics. Archaeological excavations carried out since the 1950s and particularly during the past two decades have provided modern scholars with many and precious pieces of information that have deeply changed our understanding of the history of Chinese ceramics. They have also undermined the concept itself, but when discussing Ding, Ru, Jun, Guan or Ge experts seldom resist the temptation to remind that it is one of the five famous wares. The aim of this paper is to trace back when and how this definition was coined, by combing through Chinese sources. Key words five famous wares China ceramics ceramic literature Song The concept of the five famous wares of the Song dynasty (Songdai Wuda Mingyao 宋代五大名窑 ) is a fundamental theory that has influenced both researching and learning about Chinese ceramics. At the end of the 1980s, Song wares were classified as either official or popular. The first category was constituted by the so-called five famous wares of the Song dynasty, namely Ding(定), Ru(汝), Jun(钧), Guan(官)and Ge(哥). Ten years later, while researching for my PhD thesis, I began to doubt the exactness of this theory, but I explored the problem only from the perspective of the Yaozhou ( 耀州 ) kilns (Rastelli, 2008).

A1' ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Jeffrey Max LaLande for the degree of Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in Archaeo1ogy/History/ArChi- tectural History presented on March 18, 1981 Title: Sojourners in the Oregon Siskiyous: Adaptation and Acculturation of the Chinese Miners in the Applegate Valley, Ca. 1855-1900. Signature redacted for privacy. Abstract approved: David Brauner The study examines the acculturation and environmental adaptation of nineteenth century Chinese miners in a por- tion of southwestern Oregon. The problem concerns the varieties of culture change whichresultedwhen this ethnic group found itself required to subsist in a newsocial and physical environment. The study focuses on the archaeo- logical data recovered from several Chinese sites in south- western Oregon as well as the records of Chinese purchases from a local Euro-American mercantile establishment. Through the use of ethnographic, archaeological and archival evidence, three Chinese behavioral patterns are investigated. The subsistence pattern includes dietary habits, wearing apparel, personal grooming and drug use. The settlement pattern includes characteristic locations of Chinese habitation sites as well as their architecture. The technological pattern involves the economic activities of the Chinese, in this case hy6raulic placer mining. The subsistence pattern of the Chinese sojourners exhibits little acculturation in food habits, personal grooming or drug use, but substantial adoption of Euro- American clothing and footwear. Environmental adaptations include the utilization of wild plants and animal foods on a limited basis. Generally, the day-to-day subsistence activities of the Chinese showed very little acculturative behavior. The settlement pattern shows a willingness to adapt some Euro-American construction techniques.
