SIX-WEEK RENO HINDSIGHT INTERIOR DESIGNER SARAH REID MAY CREATE DREAM HOMES FOR A LIVING BUT THERE WAS STILL PLENTY TO LEARN WHEN RENOVATING HER OWN FAMILY HOME

THE DINING AREA

or interior designer Sarah Reid F and her husband Nick, the first non-negotiable for their dream family home was the location. The couple was set on living close to the city where the amenities were nearby and they didn’t have to rely on a car – even if that meant a smaller block size. After seeing a dozen houses, they found “the one” in Malvern: A three bedroom, two bathroom brick and weatherboard house with little natural light, yet loads of potential. “This was the first house we looked at where we both walked in and could absolutely imagine living in the spaces,” Sarah says. “It had a great floor plan, no structural changes were required and we knew we could do some immediate work to improve it, as well as the opportunity to do something bigger picture with it later.” Armed with a builder Sarah had worked with professionally, and a vision to brighten and define the spaces, the couple undertook a six-week renovation. The result? A clean and sophisticated family home with a dash of the unexpected. Here’s how they did it. A
