PALM BEACH OPERA 27 SYNOPSIS

Setting: Mythical China ACT I In a crowded square outside a palace, an official reads an edict: any prince seeking to wed Princess Turandot must answer three riddles, and if he fails, he will die. Her latest suitor, the Prince of Persia, is to be executed at the rise of the moon. Bloodthirsty citizens urge the executioner on, and in the tumult, a slave girl, Liù, calls out for help when her aged master is pushed to the ground. Prince Calàf, exiled from his homeland, recognizes him as his long-lost father, Timur, the vanquished King of Tartary. When the old man tells his son that only Liù has remained faithful to him, the prince asks her why. She replies it is because once, long ago, Calàf smiled at her. The mob engulfs them, crying for blood, but the moon emerges and all fall into fearful silence. The doomed suitor passes on the way to execution, moving the onlookers to call upon Turandot to spare his life. Turandot appears and, in the blink of an eye, bids the execution proceed. Calàf, intoxicated by the Princess, strides to the gong that proclaims the arrival of a new suitor as Timur and Liù try to convince him to leave with them. Immediately, Turandot’s ministers, Ping, Pang, and Pong appear and also try to warn Calàf of his folly. Their pleas denied, Calàf strikes the fatal gong and calls out Turandot’s name. INTERMISSION ACT II In their quarters, Ping, Pang, and Pong prepare for the eventuality of a wedding or a funeral. Longing for their past lives, they lament the harshness of Turandot’s reign, and pray for love to conquer her icy heart so peace can return. As the sounds of the impending trial grow louder, the ministers are called back to reality. The Emperor Altoum, seated on a high throne in the palace, also asks Calàf to give up his quest, to no avail. Turandot enters and tells the story of her ancestor Princess Lou-Ling, brutally slain by a conquering prince; in revenge Turandot has closed off her heart, stating that none shall ever possess her. She then poses her first question: “What is born each night and dies each dawn?” “Hope,” Calàf answers correctly. Unnerved, Turandot continues: “What flickers red and warm like a flame, yet is not fire?” “Blood,” replies Calàf. Shaken, Turandot delivers her third riddle: “What is like ice but burns?” Calàf triumphantly replies, “Turandot!” The castle celebrates Calàf’s triumph, but the princess begs her father not to allow this stranger to possess her. Seeing her distress, Calàf offers a riddle of his own. If Turandot can tell him his name before the sun rises, he will sacrifice his life. INTERMISSION ACT III In a palace garden, heralds deliver a proclamation that none shall sleep until Turandot learns the stranger’s name. Calàf strengthens his resolve to conquer Turandot. Ping, Pang, and Pong arrive to bribe Calàf unsuccessfully to withdraw. As the fearful mob threatens Calàf with weapons, soldiers drag in Liù and Timur. Horrified, Calàf tries to convince the mob that neither knows his secret. When Turandot appears, commanding the dazed Timur to speak, Liù cries out that she alone knows the stranger’s identity. Though tortured, she remains silent. Moved by her endurance and resolve, Turandot asks Liù’s secret, and the girl replies, “Love.” When the princess signals the soldiers to intensify the torture, Liù grabs a soldier’s dagger and kills herself. The crowd withdraws, leaving Turandot alone to confront a stunned Calàf, who reproaches her for her cruelty then, seeing her guard let down for a brief moment, boldly kisses her. Turandot’s strength leaves her and she weeps for the first time. To match her vulnerability, Calàf reveals his true identity, thereby putting his life in Turandot’s hands. Trumpets announce the arrival of dawn. Turandot announces to the universe that she has discovered the stranger’s name — it is Love!

PALM BEACH OPERA 28 THE BACKGROUND

Giacomo Puccini was world-renowned as the leading Italian opera composer at the turn of the 20th century, following his successes with La bohème, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly. While he had made his fame in the verismo style which explored realistic contemporary subjects, by 1920 he was determined to forge a new path. Puccini’s librettists suggested as inspiration a mythical fable called Turandot by Carlo Gozzi, a Venetian playwright from the 18th century. With its basis in Persian legend, Gozzi had satirically adapted the exotic tale of a Chinese Princess whose potential suitors must answer riddles on pain of death, turning it into a tragicomedy by introducing Italian commedia dell’arte characters. However, it was the dramatic and emotional possibilities inherent in the passionate transformation of the misandrist heroine that immediately attracted Puccini to the story, and he instructed his collaborators to humanize the protagonists and create a libretto so full of emotion that it will “make the world weep.” Ultimately, the full development of the Princess’ change of heart was itself an intractable riddle that challenged Puccini and his librettists for months, and one that remained unsolved at the time of the composer’s sudden death in 1924 while undergoing experimental radiation therapy for his recently diagnosed throat cancer. The masterful score he left behind has proven to be a pinnacle of the genre which features Puccini’s melodic genius redefined through bold harmonic complexity and innovative orchestral and choral writing on the grandest scale. Yet, the opera had been finished only through Liù’s death in Act III, with pages of fragments and sketches providing clues to directions the climactic final duet may have eventually taken. The task of realizing these ideas and composing an ending was given to Franco Alfano, whose two best-known works were regarded for having a similar compositional style to Puccini’s. While its merits have long been the subject of debate, Alfano’s ending was published and has become standard, though at the world premiere of Turandot in Milan on April 25, 1926, the performance was famously concluded by conductor Arturo Toscanini midway through Act III, when he turned to the audience and reportedly said, “Here the opera ends, because at this point the master died.” James Barbato

PALM BEACH OPERA 29 CHIEF CONDUCTOR’S NOTES

To say that Puccini is one of the greatest and most important opera composers is an absolute understatement. It is interesting, however, to remember that Puccini held a tremendously low opinion of himself in the context of music history; he always felt that his composing was less brilliant than other composers, especially his German colleague, . Puccini was a champion of verismo style, which sought to highlight a realistic approach to opera drama and psychology as a reaction against the romanticism of late 19th century composers. Nevertheless, Puccini was always afraid that his intellectual instincts were not clear enough in his music. Of course he wrote great melodies, but his music offers much more than that; indeed, there are great emotions in his operas, but those are secondary to the actual construction of each score. Puccini’s true brilliance is found in the level of subtlety and sophistication between his writing of arias and recitatives, the very elaborate architecture he puts into his work, and how the arias reflect the intimate psychology of their respective characters. In his most revered operas such as La bohème, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca, Puccini demonstrates the height of his mastery of verismo. Then comes Turandot, his final work, not completed at the time of his death, which is always challenging to categorize as either a romantic opera or a verismo opera. In fact, it is neither. Turandot shows Puccini at his most expressionist, in the tradition of Strauss, Wagner (the Tristan elements), Mahler, and even Berg. It portrays a style that would have been the dawn of new Puccini, had he lived to compose more works. Does Turandot contain verismo? Sometimes. Is it sentimental? No. It contains sentiment without falling into sentimentality. Love in Turandot is not love in the sense of Pinkerton and Butterfly. This is expressionist love — Calàf represents life and Turandot represents death. There is an inherent feeling that the life in Calàf needs to couple with the death in Turandot to create harmony in nature, like yin and yang. The music of Turandot invites a connection with something greater than oneself, creating a truly spiritual experience for the audience. David Stern

PALM BEACH OPERA 30 DIRECTOR’S NOTES

The origins of Turandot are, in fact, not Chinese, but Persian, with the original being found in the story collection, One Thousand and One Days, a companion to the more well-known One Thousand and One Nights. The first Italian version was the play by Carlo Gozzi, who incorporated personalities and scenarios from the commedia dell’arte, which Puccini traced through the characters of Ping, Pang, and Pong. In my studies leading up to directing this piece for the first time in 2018, I stumbled across another influence. While reading a book about the life of Jalaluddin Rumi, the famous Sufi poet from the 13th century, I learned that he also wrote a version of this fairy tale in The Masnavi. This was my way into the opera. Rumi writes about romantic love and spiritual love as if they were one. Love for the godhead, love for a human, divine love, and carnal love are indistinguishable. By applying Rumi’s deliberate blurring of different types of love to the tale of Turandot, I suddenly began reading the libretto as the tale of a man (Calàf) on a spiritual journey, fighting with himself to reach peace and oneness within. Ping, Pang, Pong are guides who give him every reason to abandon his path in order to spur him on. Timur and Liù are loved ones from his past who appear as spirits to show him the way through. Turandot is the divine ideal, the spiritual half of Calàf’s being, but she has been rendered cold, frozen over, a shut door. He must learn to accept and exude love in order to walk the path of enlightenment with her. As I dove deeper into my readings of Rumi, I came across poem after poem that reaffirmed by connections between this fairy tale and the great Sufi poet’s take on finding divine love. I read a number of them to the cast, and share this one (in translation by Deepak Chopra) with you: The sky was lit by the splendor of the moon So powerful I fell to the ground Your love has made me sure I am ready to forsake this worldly life and surrender to the magnificence of your Being Turandot is a hero’s quest, a mythical fantasy of conquest, a love story, but above all it is a fairy tale about human connection. Tonight we recount a story about finding the godhead in another’s smile, about melting the cold exteriors this hard existence often gives us by sharing the light we possess with those who push it away. Through Puccini’s brilliant musical storytelling, we are reminded that we all possess the power of forgiveness and divine love through a pure smile, the touch of a hand, and through the simple, but often difficult act of pointing out the light to a friend, neighbor, or loved one who is ensconced in darkness. Keturah Stickann

PALM BEACH OPERA 31 DAVID STERN Chief Conductor David Stern’s musical leadership is spread across three continents. Whether conducting a romantic opera, a baroque oratorio or a classical symphony, teaching vocal master classes or defending cultural activities, David Stern keeps his musicians, students and audiences riveted by sharing his strong musical convictions and his belief that music is relevant and indeed essential in today’s world. He is the founder and director of Opera Fuoco, the Paris-based international opera company and young artist program dedicated to lyric repertoire from the mid-18th century to the present, chief conductor of the Palm Beach Opera, artistic advisor and chief conductor of the Shanghai Baroque Festival, and director of the newly founded Heifetz Baroque Program in Staunton, Virginia. Since 2016, he has been the co-chair of the jury of the Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition. Stern’s repertoire ranges from the mainstream to the eclectic. As music director of the Israel and St. Gallen opera houses, he championed works such as Simone Mayr’s Medea, Berg’s Wozzeck, Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, and Weill’s Mahagonny, as well as Mozart, Strauss, and Puccini. With Opera Fuoco, he has led the modern day premiere of JC Bach’s Zanaida and the French premiere of Korngold’s Die stumme Serenade. He has championed operas of Telemann such as Damon and Richardus and most recently conducted the Mass in B minor in Leipzig to close Bachfest 2019. In 2020, he will bring Mayr’s L’amor coniugale to the Beethovenfest in Bonn. In Shanghai, he has performed Purcell and Handel, Bloch’s Sacred Service, Roussel’s Symphony No. 3, and will soon present the Chinese premiere of Florent Schmitt’s La Tragédie de Salomé. Since launching the Aix-en-Provence Festival’s Académie Internationale d’Art Lyrique with Stephane Lissner in 1998, David Stern has been committed to developing young voices. He created Opera Fuoco in 2003 as a platform for young professional singers in France, combining both a young artists program, a period-instrument orchestra, and a company which produces concertante and staged projects nationally and internationally. In 2016, he conducted Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the Juilliard School in New York, and will appear in 2020 as part of the Curtis Institute Opera season. In 2019, he inaugurated a very successful baroque vocal workshop at the Heifetz International Institute in Staunton, Virginia, initiating both singers and young string players to baroque performance style and expression. He also participates in the Nordplus Education Network for a series of concerts with young singers from Baltic countries at the Drottningholm Theater in Stockholm. Stern has enjoyed collaborations with international stage directors including David Alden, Stéphane Braunschweig, Robin Guarino, Sam Helfrich, Waut Koeken, Jakob Peters-Messer, and Aron Stiehl, among many others. With Yoshi Oïda, he created iconic settings of Britten’s Curlew River and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde, and with Francisco Negrin he led performances of Mozart’s Mitridate as artist in residence at the 2014 Drottningholm Opera Festival. Stern has recorded with various ensembles throughout his career. With Opera Fuoco, his Paris-based opera company, he has recently recorded Berenice che fai, a compilation of late Baroque and early Classical works with three members of Opera Fuoco’s studio singers which was very well received by the press. Previous recordings with Opera Fuoco include The Romantic Cantatas with Karine Deshayes, Johann Christian Bach’s opera Zanaida, and two Handel oratorios, Semele and Jephtha. He also recorded Simone Mayr’s Medea with the St. Gallen Opera, John Field’s piano concertos with Concerto Köln and Andreas Staier, as well as works by Otto Nicolai and concertos of Albert Roussel with Jean-Guihen Queyras. His latest recording of arias by Florian Leopold Gassman with Ania Vegry will be released on the CPO label. David Stern is a frequent guest conductor around the globe. He is regularly invited to the Edmonton Opera, the Drottningholm Opera Festival, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Shanghai and Guangzhou Symphonies, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Russian Symphony, and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, and has led recent performances with the Boston Lyric Opera, the Royal Danish Opera Orchestra, the Symphony, and NDR Hannover. In 2020, he will appear with the Opera Orchestra of Marseille and the Sydney Symphony in Australia. Stern received his Bachelor of Arts from Yale College and his Masters of Music from the Juilliard School. He is married to the violinist Katharina Wolff.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS

Palm Beach Opera is most grateful to The V. Atkins Foundation for its generous support of all Palm Beach Opera educational and community engagement efforts on behalf of opera and classical vocal arts.

GOLDNER CENTER FOR CHILDREN’S OPERA EDUCATION

Palm Beach Opera’s education programs bring live opera to our community, inspire life-long interest in the arts, and present thoughtful, engaging education programs for learners of all ages. Through the following education programs, the Goldner Center for Children’s Opera Education fulfills Palm Beach Opera’s educational mission to engage children in opera’s timeless tales and awaken their musical curiosity.

The Goldner Center for Children’s Opera Education is graciously funded by Sandra and Paul Goldner, with additional support provided by The Daft Family Foundation.

CONCERTS IN THE CLASSROOM (K-12) Sponsored by the Alvin and Louise Myerberg Family Foundation Bailey Apprentice Artists present interactive programs that turn the classroom into a stage.

PALM BEACH OPERA STUDIO (11-12) Sponsored by Suzanne L. Niedland and the Palm Beach Opera Guild Developing the next generation of singers in an eight-month training program for local high school students.

OPERA REHEARSAL 101 (6-12) Sponsored by the Palm Beach Opera Guild and The Honorable & Mrs. Roger H. Lourie Middle and high school students and their teachers are invited to attend a working dress rehearsal and catch a glimpse of the production process.

STORY TIME SERIES (PreK-5) A sing-along storytelling adventure where children are brought into the pages of opera’s famous tales.

OPERA DISCOVERY CONCERTS (K-12) Palm Beach Opera’s Benenson Young Artists and Apprentice Artists present a selection of opera’s famed arias, duets, and ensemble numbers.

PALM BEACH OPERA 56 COMMUNITY EVENTS & ADULT ENGAGEMENT

OPERA AL FRESCO! Sponsored by Olive and Michael Schaeffer Palm Beach Opera’s unique summer series offers the opportunity to experience opera in a relaxed setting at West Palm Beach’s Elizabeth Avenue Station. Opera al Fresco! features live opera, drinks, games, and fun for the whole family with a different opera-inspired theme for each event!

HAPPY HOUR SERIES Cheers to opera! Enjoy a delightful “cocktail” of education, conversation, and pop-up arias with the Palm Beach Opera Benenson Young Artists. This will be a wonderful opportunity to experience opera arias in an intimate, informal setting that is sure to educate and entertain while you mix and mingle with our singers and other patrons. Even if you don’t know much about opera, you are sure to enjoy this unique and fun series. Be sure to check our website for updates.

ANIMA Sponsored by The Honorable & Mrs. Roger H. Lourie Animate the soul. ANIMA (pronounced AH-nee-mah) brings opera to people who would otherwise be unable to experience the art form in the theatre, so that their lives can be animated and their spirits uplifted.

ANIMA brings the artist and the audience together through songs and personal story-telling. Unlike traditional community concert programs, ANIMA focuses on the heart of opera, exploring why each artist sings and uncovering their personal connections to the art form. Advance reservation required.

CURTAIN WARMERS Before the red velvet rises. Curtain Warmers provide the audience with insider information about the operas, the composers, the music, and the company, from the perspective of the Associate Conductor.

Curtain Warmers show the casual side of Palm Beach Opera, allowing patrons to sit anywhere in the theatre during the program and listen to information delivered in a colloquial and entertaining way. Curtain Warmers take place inside the theater, one hour prior to the performance start time.

SUNDAY Q&A Curious? Sunday Q&A offers Sunday matinee guests the exhilarating chance to talk with Palm Beach Opera artists immediately following their final performance. This program is often light- hearted, humorous, and always enlightening. Sunday Q&A affords participants the opportunity to get to know the artists, to hear their stories, and dive into their artistic choices. Sunday Q&A takes place in the theater, immediately following the matinee performance.

LUNCH & LEARN Join us for a unique blend of education and opera at Lunch & Learn. You’ll enjoy a delicious meal with a glass of wine followed by a musical program presented by Palm Beach Opera’s Benenson Young Artists and artistic staff.

CONVERSATIONS Conversations highlights the inner workings of an opera company through personal conversations with Opera staff, guest artists, and lecturers. Conversations is bolstered by historical context and, when possible, musical interludes performed by Benenson Young Artists and Bailey Apprentice Artists.

For more information on community engagement, contact James Clements, Education & Community Engagement Manager, at 561.835.7577 or [email protected].
