  • Clemency Newman Looking Into the Popular Reality Show Geordie Shore
From reality television to the hyperreal: How do the pressures of reality shows such as Geordie Shore cause their characters to change their physical appearance? Clemency Newman Abstract Looking into the popular reality show Geordie Shore, I will undertake research to answer why it is that the women who appear on the show change their physical appearance and what connection this has to their celebrity status. I hope to argue that because the women are considered lower class, they have no other power than their perceived attractiveness and are therefore pressured into trying to achieve a hyperreal body, relating to Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation. Introduction Reality television is big business, with over 300 reality format shows on air in the US alone (Washington Post, 2015) from Idol to Big Brother, they rake in millions of viewers every night and have a significant impact on popular culture. These shows present a concentrated, edited and scandalised version of everyday life, wrapped in the guise of being true to the viewer, only more dramatic. Television has the ability to shape our view of the world and now with the ever pervasive aspects of social media, networks such as Bravo can imprint an everlasting impression of what we consider normal. However, even when know what we are watching is completely unreal, we accept it as ‘reality’ and accept the characters into our lives, until they become overthrown by a younger, prettier and more outrageous model. Geordie Shore is one such television show which presents an exaggerated, hyperbolic version of reality, with the cast members performing ridiculous, violent and carnal acts in front of a worldwide audience and being celebrated in the process.

  • Geordie Shore Gänget Är Tillbaka I En Ny Säsong – Deltagarna Festar Loss I Europa
Geordie Shore gänget är tillbaka i en ny säsong – deltagarna festar loss i Europa The Geordies are back!

  • The Politics of Hyperbole on Geordie Shore: Class, Gender, Youth and Excess
The Politics of Hyperbole on Geordie Shore: Class, Gender, Youth and Excess. Abstract This article discusses MTV’s Geordie Shore against the backcloth of current social conditions for working-class youth. It suggests that the aesthetic, physical and discursive features of excess represent hyperbole, produced from within an affective situation of precariousness and routed through the labour relations of media visibility. Hyper-glamour, hyper-sex and hyper-emotion are responses to the ideologies of the future-projected, self-governing neoliberal subject and to the contemporary gendered contradictions of sexually proclivity and monogamous heteronormativity. By ‘flaunting’ the realities of self-work and making the labour of themselves more/most visible, the participants of Geordie Shore are claiming an animated type of ill/legitimate subjectivity. Introduction Season One of MTV’s Geordie Shore, the British version of the US programme Jersey Shore, first aired in the summer of 2011. That English summer also saw the break-out of five days of rioting where, in response to a police shooting in London, young people took to the streets across a number of British cities, attacking and looting commercial properties and hitting out at the police. The headlines read, ‘The Underclass Lashes Out’i, but importantly those ‘underclass’ involved were all mostly under the age of 24 (Ball et al., 2011). The media panic and political rhetoric following the riots reinforced dominant neoliberal ideas about anti-social behaviour, denying any structural logic for young people’s social exclusion and reinforcing a rhetoric of ‘choice’ and ‘responsibility’. This framing of the riots came from the Right and the Left at a time of downward social mobility rates and high youth unemployment across Europe.

  • Kändisar Blir Märkta För Livet I MTV:S Nya ”Just Tattoo of Us”

  • 'Not Quite a Geordie': the Folk-Ethnonyms of North-East
‘Not quite a Geordie’: the folk-ethnonyms of north-east England Michael Pearce University of Sunderland 1. INTRODUCTION In recent years sociolinguists have been examining the consequences of ‘late-’ or ‘post-modernity’. These phrases identify a related set of conditions, largely contingent on unprecedented global flows of people, capital, goods, and services. The speed and intensity of these flows means that the current epoch is characterized by the transgression and blurring of various kinds of borders, the fluidity of institutions and social categories, the ‘flexibility’ of labour, mass consumerism and individualism (Young 2007, 1–2). In terms of language use, the influence of late modernity is evident in phenomena such as codeswitching, borrowing, second language acquisition and multilingualism. Of more central concern in the context of the research presented here is the fact that mobilities can contribute to the reduction of linguistic difference through levelling, supra-localization and dialect erosion (Heller 2005; Britain 2010; Johnstone 2010). It appears that levelling—‘the loss of localised features … to be replaced with features found over a wider region’ (Kerswill 2003, 223)—is occurring in many parts of the world, including the UK. But, as Johnstone points out (2010, 391), the conditions which reduce linguistic differences are also those which, somewhat paradoxically, ‘foster dialect and language awareness’. Where there is fear that a distinctive sense of place is being eroded, interest in those aspects of the local perceived to be under threat often grows.1 This 1 One recent manifestation of this has been the re-invigoration of a literary genre sometimes called ‘place writing’.

  • Kim Kardashian West, 35
SINCE finding fame, these stars have undergone dramatic transformations. Kim Kardashian West, 35 Kim looks like she has a different nose compared to in 2006 Since that sex tape was released in 2006, leading to the world’s most famous reality show, KK has overhauled her entire image. Kim’s not shy about admitting to regular Botox injections and laser hair removal around her forehead, both of which have made her face smoother and more heart-shaped. When it comes to actually going under the knife, though, Kim’s been more coy, despite the fact her face (especially her nose) looks very different indeed. “Her face has changed a lot in recent years. It’s more curvaceous with volume in her cheeks, so she may have had cheek implants. I think it’s likely Kim’s had lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid, which temporarily plumps them up,” says Dr De Silva. “Also, her nose is shorter and the bridge is narrower – both signs of rhinoplasty.” Lauren Goodger, 29 Lauren denies dabbling in Botox or fillers She was never entirely “natural”, thanks to her Essex perma-tan and heavy warpaint, but five years on from finding fame, Lauren looks like a new woman. Her incredible weight loss, from 13st to 9st, has changed her body from flab to fit. Lauren had a £4,000 nose job in 2011 and breast implants in 2013 that boosted her from a D to an E cup, but she’s denied having lip fillers or Botox, insisting her pout and flawless skin are the result of clever make-up and a laser procedure.
