  • Clemency Newman Looking Into the Popular Reality Show Geordie Shore
From reality television to the hyperreal: How do the pressures of reality shows such as Geordie Shore cause their characters to change their physical appearance? Clemency Newman Abstract Looking into the popular reality show Geordie Shore, I will undertake research to answer why it is that the women who appear on the show change their physical appearance and what connection this has to their celebrity status. I hope to argue that because the women are considered lower class, they have no other power than their perceived attractiveness and are therefore pressured into trying to achieve a hyperreal body, relating to Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation. Introduction Reality television is big business, with over 300 reality format shows on air in the US alone (Washington Post, 2015) from Idol to Big Brother, they rake in millions of viewers every night and have a significant impact on popular culture. These shows present a concentrated, edited and scandalised version of everyday life, wrapped in the guise of being true to the viewer, only more dramatic. Television has the ability to shape our view of the world and now with the ever pervasive aspects of social media, networks such as Bravo can imprint an everlasting impression of what we consider normal. However, even when know what we are watching is completely unreal, we accept it as ‘reality’ and accept the characters into our lives, until they become overthrown by a younger, prettier and more outrageous model. Geordie Shore is one such television show which presents an exaggerated, hyperbolic version of reality, with the cast members performing ridiculous, violent and carnal acts in front of a worldwide audience and being celebrated in the process.

  • Jennifer Burton Thesis (PDF 1MB)
‘Fair Dinkum Personal Grooming’ Male beauty culture and men’s magazines in twentieth century Australia Jennifer Burton BA (Hons) Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2008 1 Keywords Men’s magazines, masculinity, grooming, metrosexual, representation, cultural economy, media, readerships 2 Abstract In this thesis, I analyse the representation of grooming in Australian men’s lifestyle magazines to explore the emergence of new masculine subjectivities constructed around narcissism and the adoption of previously feminine-coded products and practices which may indicate important shifts in the cultural meanings of Australian masculinity. However, in order to talk about ‘new’ subjectivities and ‘shifts’ in masculine behaviours and cultural ideals, then it is imperative to demonstrate ‘old’ practices and ideologies, and so while the thesis is concerned with discourses of grooming and models of masculinity presented in the new genre of men’s lifestyle titles which appeared on the Australian market in the late 1990s, it frames this discussion with detailed analyses of previously unexplored Australian men’s general interest magazines from the 1930s. According to Frank Mort consumption, traditionally associated with the feminine has now become a central part of imagining men (1996: 17-18) while the representation and sale of masculinity is an increasingly important part of the ‘cultural economy’ (Mikosza, 2003). In this thesis I am concerned with the role of men’s lifestyle magazines and magazine representations of masculinity

It does this by administering the mandatory advertising Codes and by actively monitoring compliance. The Codes contain special rules for alcohol, which sit on top of the general provisions that all ads must not mislead, harm or offend. The rules for alcohol advertisements were strengthened significantly in 2005 and are actively promoted and enforced. The ASA has undertaken this survey to determine the compliance rate of alcohol ads1 with the British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (the CAP Code) and with the BCAP TV and Radio Advertising Standards Codes (the BCAP Codes). The Compliance team monitored and assessed the content of alcohol ads that appeared across all media during 1 - 24 December 2008.

Ian Locks Chief Executive, PPA For further information, please contact: Amina Ymer - Marketing, Research and Information Executive Philip Cutts – Marketing Director Colin Robinson – Planning Director Editors Amina Ymer Jamie Gavin The Magazine Media 2 Handbook 2007 Introduction The evolution of magazine media As magazines evolve and business media becomes recognised as one of the UK’s larger industries, it is difficult to imagine a time in their 400 year history when there has been a period of more dramatic or rapid change. This vibrant and evolving industry gains in stature and confidence as it masters the art of multi-platform communication. We estimate the value of consumer magazines to be around £7.2bn, and the business media industry – including magazines, to be valued at £18bn to £20bn, with customer magazines valued at around £800m. Magazines themselves – the printed ones – have continued to flourish in the last decade since the launch of the Internet.
