• Land use, zoning and functions • Enforcement of Municipal Laws • To prevent and remove encroachments • Maintain comprehensive database and information system • Propose and collect taxes, cesses, user fees, rates, rents, tolls, charges, levies, fines and penalties • Provide, manage, operate, maintain and improve the municipal infrastructure and services including: a. Water supply distribution other than inherited systems maintained by or on behalf of the City District; b. Sewerage system other than an integrated system maintained by on behalf of City District excluding sewerage treatment and disposal; c. Solid waste collection and conveyance to transfer stations designated by the Town but excluding treatment and disposal of waste; d. Street lighting; e. • Total No of Houses 104,917 • Total No of Lanes 7,256 • Lanes provided with Sanitation System 6,306 • Number of houses served 94,746 •Number of collector sewers 421 •Peoples investment in sanitation 88.26 m •Resultantly infant mortality rate has fallen from 128 to 37 during the period ( 1983-1993) owing to better sanitation system CONCLUSION

The Orangi Pilot Project experience is certainly an outstanding example of community participation which can be emulated not only in other cities of but in other countries too.
