Aim: This course helps I Semester students to comprehend linguistic and literary development of Hindi so that they may use this as source in understanding other Social Science courses and this course also helps SSH students to fulfill their requirement of necessary courses to attain Graduation.

Brief description of modules/ Main modules: Selection of representative Poetry and Fiction along with Non-fiction Prose written in Hindi is taught basically through class room teaching. It includes poetry from devotional poets like Kabirdas, Surdas, Tulsidas and Mirabai. Apart from these pre- modern poets some other such as Maithili Sharan Gupta, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala, Mahadevi Verma, Nagarjun, Bhawani Prasad Mishra and Raghubir Sahai are also represented through their representstive poems. The prose section includes an essay of Bhartendu Harishchandra describing different forms of Hindi Bhasha. Fiction part includes a short story by Premchand, a travelogue by and an essay by . It also includes satirical writings, radio drama and Sketches by important prose writers of Hindi. The other section of the prose portion includes non literary thought provoking Hindi writing on Economics, History, Sociology, Philosophy, Music, Science and Culture by Kamal Nayan Kabra, Sundar Lal, S. C. Dubey, Narendra Dev, Gunakar Muley and Ram Manohar Lohia. This selection also includes translated article of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
