COMMUNITY NEWS KIRBY WISKE, MAUNBY, NEWBY WISKE & OTTERINGTON’S Search - South Otterington, Maunby, Kirby Wiske and Newby Wiske Community WHAT’S ON IN JANUARY 2020 Tues 14th Jan 7pm Kirkby Wiske Local History Group, Village Hall Kirby Wiske. Eileen Brereton and Ann Ward will visit to tell us about WW1 and the work of the Red Cross in our area. Our meetings are very informal so if you are interested, please come along! SNEAK PEEK AT FUTURE EVENTS Thu 6th Feb 10.00 to 11.30am Coffee morning and Book Exchange at South Otterington Village Hall. Come and get yourself a nice book to read and have a cup of coffee, a piece of cake, a chance at the raffle and a good chat. Thu 6th Feb 7.30 Talk by John Buglass “Secrets of the Yorkshire Coast” entrance fee £4.00 in aid of the Newby Wiske Action Fund, please support this as we will all be affected if PGL win. Come and hear John’s very interesting talk. Fri 28th Feb 7.30pm Call my Bluff Wine Evening, South Otterington Village Hall, tickets are £10 and need to be booked in advance, you can get them from Vanessa Gillson on 07980 885664 or Patricia Shore on 07872 875 777. All proceeds made will be in aid of the Village Hall toilet refurbishment. Village Events 2020 South Otterington Village Hall Committee are to arrange a programme of community events in 2020 which, with your support, will assist in our fundraising to upgrade the hall toilets. If you have any suggestions of events, you’d like to see please let us know. June – Summer Fete September – Scarecrow Trail South Otterington, Newby Wiske & Maunby Parish Council Details of current Parish Council members & their contact details can be found on Public Notice Boards in each village. Any other queries contact Keith Bowe on 07557 798386. Parish Clerk Vacancy from January 2020 there will be a 10-hour vacancy for a Parish Clerk. Duties will include clerking the monthly parish council meeting, preparing agenda's in advance, writing minutes of meetings, looking after accounts and dealing with correspondence etc. Expenses will be paid in addition. A laptop and printer are supplied. Salary will be dependent upon experience with annual increments to the top of the grade. New sessions start Monday 27th of January 2020 6.30 - 7.30pm. Please contact Helen for further info on 07784 378242 or email [email protected] Table tennis Tuesday 7pm-9pm all welcome. Starts again on the 7th January. All equipment is provided but if you wish to bring your own bat, please feel free. There is a standing charge of £2 per person to contribute towards the cost of hiring the hall. Little Otters Parent/Carer & Toddler Group Thursdays 1.15–3.15pm a friendly group with babies/toddlers & pre-schoolers who meet each week, please come along and join us, we look forward to meeting new people. Clare thanks all the past members but in the end, there were not enough people to carry on. 100 Club we now have over 100 places sold; new applications are still welcome! By increasing our membership, the prize monies will increase accordingly, and it is a great way to support your local Village Hall. The Christmas winners which were picked out at our December Coffee morning on the 5th of December were: 1st Prize of £50 went to No. 37 Craig Watts, 2nd prize of £30 went to No. 25 Chris Mugford, 3rd Prize of £15 went to No. 89 Nigel Harker and 4th Prize of £10 went to No. 87 Carol Bowe (This extra prize kindly donated by Jane Willis.) The January draw will be made at our next Coffee morning from 10.00 to 11.30am on Thursday 6th of February. Thurs 26th Otterington Shorthorn Charity Race night in aid of South Otterington School Tech Supplies The Friends of South Otterington School would like to thank Luke for organising a brilliant race night. The event raised over £380, enough for a new laptop, how fabulous. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. Kirby Wiske Village Hall Thanks to all who took part in our Wine Call My Bluff evening. Much enjoyment was had by all! About £300 was raised for the upkeep of the village Hall, with a donation given to a pancreatic cancer charity. Twenty villagers and their families raised their voices for an evening of Christmas carol singing around the fire in the Village Hall on Monday, 23rd with mulled wine, sausage rolls and mince pies. On Tuesday 10 December seventeen members of the Kirby Wiske Local History Group met for a very enjoyable Christmas lunch at the Crosby, Thornton le Beans. The food and service were excellent and, as always, the company was wonderfully entertaining. Kirby Wiske Parish Council meets in the Village Hall at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of each month with a meeting on 7th January. Agendas and minutes can be found on their website kirbywiskeparishcouncil.gov.uk/ For all bookings & details for Kirby Wiske Village Hall contact Stevie on 01845 587738 POST VAN with a full range of post office services is available outside Kirby Wiske Village Hall every week on Wednesday between 12.30pm & 1.15pm & Thursday between 1.45pm & 2.30pm WHAT’S BEEN HAPPENING & WHAT’S GOING ON Newby Wiske Defibrillator we are pleased to be able to inform you that permission has been given for the defibrillator to be installed on The Old School House in the middle of Newby Wiske, this will happen imminently, thank you to all involved in making this happen. Neighbourhood Watch Scheme we are pleased to be able to inform you that we now have 80 people who have signed up to the Scheme but hopefully many more of you would like to sign up. There is a group Facebook page to communicate Neighbourhood Watch matters that has been set up. Please search Otterington’s, Maunby, Newby Wiske & Kirby Wiske Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to join, before your request to join is accepted you will be asked to provide your name & address – this is a requirement stipulated by North Yorkshire Police of all Scheme Coordinators and without these details we will be unable to accept your membership request. The nominated Scheme Coordinators, who are registered with the Police, are Sandra Barnes, Celia Newton & Penny Helliwell nobody else will see your details. The Police report that goes to the Parish Council each month will also be included – please join us to help make our community safer. South Otterington Signs if you have driven past you may have noticed that the old village sign outside the school has been replaced with a much smarter stone built base and new sign. The stone for the base was supplied by Martin Harland and has been built in a trough like style and winter pansies have been planted in the top. Thank you to Keith Bowe, Iain Glover & Ian Smith for building it. Duke of Edinburgh Volunteers thank you to the volunteers for helping Jo & Chris Cook clear the leaves and debris from the verge and footpath from the bridge over the river Wiske towards Newby Wiske in order to clean up and restore the old brick wall that has been hidden for years! You have all done an amazing job well done.
