In particular it seeks to explain how Drayton’s female letter-writers manage to negotiate the impediments to self-expression they initially encounter and thus go on to articulate morally and politically incisive forms of complaint. -

English 12AP Summer Reading Assignment All seniors entering English 12 AP in the fall must read Edith Hamilton’s Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, which is a compilation of myths drawn from classical literature. Paperback editions are available at local bookstores and libraries as well as through on-line merchants. E-texts can be found here and here. As you read, keep a reading log, take notes, or annotate in a way that will help you to remember the characters and storylines of each myth. After you read, choose one poem from the list below and write a 500-word explication discussing how the allusion in the poem supports the poet’s aim/purpose and contributes to the meaning of the poem as a whole. Consider the following features of allusion: 1. An allusion is a reference to another work (e.g., mythological, classical, biblical, literary, or historical). 2. An extended allusion is more than an isolated reference but calls to the reader’s mind the entire context of its source in order to comment on the poet’s subject. 3. The reference (classical, biblical, or mythological, for example) is not itself the subject of the work in which it appears. Quarmby1 William Shakespeare arguably represents the height of English intellectual creativity. His drama and poetry transcend his mortality, speaking to generation upon generation with an authoritative appeal that seems morally superior because of its durability over the centuries. In his play As You Like It, Shakespeare even appears to glorify the social bandit and proto food activist. Characters that survive in the Forest of Arden by poaching their usurping duke’s deer are likened to the mythical figure, Robin Hood. The allusion achieves greater significance when considered alongside near- contemporary pseudo-biographies that record Shakespeare’s early life as a poacher and youthful renegade. At face value, Shakespeare’s Robin Hood reference might suggest his subtle advocacy of food sovereignty and social justice. This romanticized image is supported by later historiographies that interpret medieval and early modern enclosure from a specifically partisan viewpoint. Early nineteenth century historians who referenced More’s Utopia, and whose influence is evident in enclosure analyses ranging from Marx to Polanyi and Bookchin, unwittingly assist in perpetuating the iconography of the social bandit Shakespeare, united with his rebellious rural contemporaries. Surprisingly, however, Shakespeare’s true personality – that of a shrewd and ruthless businessman, at ease with hoarding in time of famine as purchasing common-land rights and privileges at the expense of his impoverished neighbors – is less familiar. The opportunistic, land-grabbing, pro-enclosure Bard, while not erased from critical view, is certainly shielded by the bardolatrous hero- worship of later ages. -

Anhand der Verknüpfung faktischer Rechtstexte, historischer Gegebenheiten und fiktionaler Dramentexte wird gezeigt, dass innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts der Glaube in England vollständig vom Katholizismus abrückte und sich dem Protestantismus zuwandte. Da dies unter dem Druck der Regierungen geschah, die mit erheblichen Geld- und Freiheitsstrafen drohten, sollten ihre Forderungen, Vorgaben und Verbote nicht eingehalten werden, waren Konflikte unumgänglich. Wie diese Konvertierung ablief, welche Spuren sie in der Gesellschaft und dem Drama bzw. dem Theater der Zeit hinterließ, ist Gegenstand dieser Arbeit. Der Fokus liegt hierbei auf dem wechselseitigen Einfluss von Politik, Gesellschaft und Drama, dessen Analyse und Darstellung zum Ziel hat aufzuzeigen, dass vor allem in dieser Epoche (die jedoch sinnbildlich für jede andere sich im Umbruch befindende Ära stehen kann) die Beziehung zwischen Bevölkerung/Theaterzuschauer, Drama/Theater und dem machthabenden Herrscher bzw. dessen/deren Regierung keineswegs einseitig gesteuert war, sondern durch einen gegenseitigen, unterschwelligen Einfluss bestimmt wurde. Im einleitenden Teil der Arbeit wird der historische Hintergrund beleuchtet. -

The Spanish Match and Jacobean Political Thought, 1618-1624 Kimberley Jayne Hackett Ph.D University of York History Department July 2009 Abstract Seventeenth-century English political thought was once viewed as insular and bound by a common law mentality. Significant work has been done to revise this picture and highlight the role played by continental religious resistance theory and what has been termed 'classical republicanism'. In addition to identifying these wider influences, recent work has focused upon the development of a public sphere that reveals a more socially diverse engagement with politics, authority and opposition than has hitherto been acknowledged. Yet for the period before the Civil War our understanding of the way that several intellectual influences were interacting to inform a politically alert 'public' is unclear, and expressions of political opposition are often tied to a pre-determined category of religious affiliation. As religious tension erupted into conflict on the continent, James I's pursuit ofa Spanish bride for Prince Charles and determination to follow a diplomatic solution to the war put his policy direction at odds with a dominant swathe of public opinion. During the last years of his reign, therefore, James experienced an unprecedented amount of opposition to his government of England. This opposition was articulated through a variety of media, and began to raise questions beyond the conduct of policy in addressing fundamental issues of political authority. By examining the deployment of political ideas during the domestic crisis of the early 1620s, this thesis seeks to uncover the varied ways in which differing discourses upon authority and obedience were being articulated against royal government. -

If justification for this paper is needed I would rather base it on his inconvenient Jack-in-the- http://library.oxfordjournals.org/ box habit of appearing suddenly in the midst of some respectable academic controversy, as if maliciously determined to introduce as many complications and uncertainties as possible. He has thus succeeded in compelling every now and again the more or less grudging consideration of the scholar, so that the results of an independent study of his career may have some interest. He was associated at one time or another with many of the finest dramatists of the age, he worked in collaboration with Dekker, Webster, and at East Carolina University on July 13, 2015 Middleton, and he seems to have been the chief writer of a play to which Shakespeare himself may have contributed. Independently, too, he has this claim to urge—that he was an Elizabethan of remarkable longevity—being eighty when he died—and that he moved all his life, as one might say, in the best circles—best, that is, in so far as the production of literature was concerned. He comes before us as an actor, prentice, poet, spy, journalist, recusant-hunter, pamphleteer, playwright, pageant-poet, antiquary, translator, citizen, and draper. The bare facts of his life provide us with an ' Elizabethan document' which more than repays study, and there is, finally, as I hope to show, intrinsic literary merit in some of his work. -

THE ELIZABETHAN PROTESTANT PRESS: A STUDY OF THE PRINTING AND PUBLISHING OF PROTESTANT RELIGIOUS LITERATURE IN ENGLISH, EXCLUDING BIBLES AND LITURGIES, 1558-1603. By WILLIAN CALDERWOOD, M.A., B.D. Submitted for the Ph.D. degree, University College. (c\ (LONBI 2 ABSTRACT Uninterrupted for forty-five years, from 1558 to 1603, Protestants in England were able to use the printing press to disseminate Protestant ideology. It was a period long enough for Protestantism to root itself deeply in the life of the nation and to accumulate its own distinctive literature. English Protestantism, like an inf ant vulnerable to the whim of a parent under King Henry VIII, like a headstrong and erratic child in Edward's reign, and like a sulking, chastised youth in the Marian years, had come of age by the end of the Elizabethan period. At the outset of Elizabeth's reign the most pressing religious need was a clear, well-reasoned defence of the Church of England. The publication of Bishop Jewel's Apologia Ecclesiae Anglicanae in 1562 was a response to that need and set the tone of literary polemics for the rest of the period. It was a time of muscle- flexing for the Elizabethan Church, and especially in the opening decades, a time when anti-Catholicism was particularly vehement. Consistently throughout the period, when Queen and country were threatened by Catholic intrigues and conspiracies, literature of exceptional virulence was published against Catholicism. But just as the press became an effective tool for defenders and apologists of the Church of England, it soon was being used as an instrument to advance the cause of further reform by more radical Protestants. -
