    Archaeologia Cantiana Vol. 62 1949 NOTES ON THE PROBABLE COURSE OF THE ROMAN ROAD FROM LYMPNE TO DOVER By IVAN D. MARGARY, F.S.A. THE existence of a Roman road connecting Lympne with. Dover is attested by its actual appearance upon the diagrammatic map known as the Peutinger Table. No traces of the road had, however, been identified, and the growth of Folkestone and its outskirts has now put much of the probable route beyond direct investigation. Some notes were put forward by the late S. E. Winbolt in his book Roman Folkestone (Methuen, 1925) as a tentative approach to the subject, and it was with a view to testing these on the ground that the present investigation was made. There is general agreement that the existing road along the old cliffs at Lympne represents the Roman road. East of Shipway Cross it bends a good deal and is probably an old ridgeway track rather than an engineered road, but there seems no reason to disregard it as a part of the route on that account. We thus arrive at the crossing of the Brockhill Stream, just at the western entry to Hythe, and it seems clear that the trackway is directly continued by an old lane, now in part only a footpath, straight up the hill north-eastwards to Saltwood, making no doubt for the hills inland. Consideration of the eastward course of a Roman road from this point is very largely determined by the topography, which here shows marked features some of which would entirely preclude the making of a direct road.

The archaeological remains are in many forms such as ruins, standing monuments and buried archaeology and all attest to a distinctive Kentish history as well as its significant geographical position as a gateway to the continent. Through the district’s archaeology it is possible to track the evolution of Kent as well as the changing cultures, ideas, trade and movement of different peoples into and out of Britain. The District’s role in the defence of the country is also highlighted in its archaeology and forms an important part of the archaeological record for this part of the British southern coastline.

    Folkestone and Hythe Birds Tetrad Guide: TR13 I (Westenhanger area and Kiln Wood) One of the more interesting habitats in TR13 I is the lake at Folkestone Racecourse, which holds breeding Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe and Coot, with these being joined by Gadwall and Pochard in winter, whilst White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Wigeon, Pintail and Goldeneye have also occurred on occasion, generally during cold weather, though the lake is prone to freezing over during prolonged frosts. Snipe can sometimes be found in the ditches by the lake and Reed Buntings breed in the surrounding vegetation, whilst Marsh Harrier and Merlin have been noted overhead. The parkland area around Westenhanger Castle used to hold Spotted Flycatchers but this species has since declined considerably. Black Redstart has been recorded singing from the racecourse buildings and may occasionally breed here. The fields in the Hillhurst Farm area may attract Lapwings and occasionally Golden Plover, whilst when left as stubble in the winter of 2013/14 they held a flock of up to 50 Yellowhammers, together with single Jack Snipe and Corn Bunting, and small numbers of Stock Doves, Sky Larks, Meadow Pipits, Linnets and Reed Buntings. Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls may be attracted, with a peak count of about 100 in November 2013. Kiln Wood has breeding Buzzard and typical woodland species, including Nuthatch, whilst Woodcock, Siskin and sometimes Lesser Redpoll may winter and the small pond in the wood can attract Mandarin. In May 2009 a singing Wood Warbler was present but was presumably just a migrant.

    PUBLIC NOTICE KENT COUNTY COUNCIL VARIOUS ROADS, SHEPWAY – SURFACE TREATMENT (PROHIBITION OF DRIVING) TEMPORARY ORDER 2017 To allow a programme of carriageway surface treatment works to be carried out, together with associated preparation and finishing, Kent County Council has made an Order to temporarily prohibit through traffic on various roads throughout East Kent. The roads that are affected in the Shepway area are shown below. The programme is planned to commence in April 2017. The actual dates of closures are yet to be confirmed at the time of going to press. Once known, the planned dates of closures will be notified in advance of the works and indicated by signage displayed on site 14 days before works are due to start. Certain roads may require duplicate closures for patching works (if needed), for the actual surface treatment works, and for the subsequent reinstatement of road markings and adjustment of iron works (road drain covers, manhole covers, etc) needed to suit the new surface. Closures will generally be between the times 07:00 hours and 19:00 hours each day, but this may vary to suit local needs. A temporary speed limit of 20 mph will be in place on certain roads for a period of about 7 days following the treatment. Where this does apply, the 20 mph Speed Limit will be clearly indicated by relevant signs clearly displayed on site. For those roads which are cul-de-sacs with no available diversion, every effort will be made to maintain access for residents, businesses and visitors, whenever it is safe to do so.

A small part of the course extends to the west into the neighbouring parish of Sellindge. Folkestone Racecourse closed in 2012, with the final race (the 'Save the Last Race' For Eastwell Manor Handicap Chase), being run on Tuesday, December 18. The former racecourse site covers an area of some 75 hectares and in broad terms is bounded by the M20/HS1/domestic rail corridor to the north, by the village of Westenhanger and properties fronting Stone Street to the east, by the A20 to the south and agricultural land to the west, which separates the site from the village of Barrow Hill. Westenhanger Station adjoins the north-west corner of the site, whilst Westenhanger Castle, a scheduled monument with grade I listed buildings, is located immediately to the north of the racecourse.

Summary The North Downs and Greensand Vale constitute a diverse and unique landscape with many elements that are iconic features of the county, such as the White Cliffs of Dover, Folkestone Downs and Elham Valley. Many of these landscapes are also of national significance for their conservation value both for the diverse wildlife and habitats supported here as well as for their geological importance. The North Downs and Greensand Vale can also boast an exceptionally rich historic environment with a number of heritage assets that are nationally significant and that also make key contributions to the local character and sense of place. In particular, these relate to the religious, farming and defence heritage of the area. 2.
